The weekend is at our doorstep as we head into Friday, May 10, 2019. Even though forecasters say we may have showers this weekend, the cool spring rain won't dampen the fun. We have a bevy of activities lined up Friday including the opening of the Transcontinental Railroad exhibit at the Nevada State Railroad Museum, day 1 of the two-day Mother's Day Plant Sale hosted by The Greenhouse Project, RSVP's Spring Celebration and Carnival at Mills Park, a day hike, art showings, live music and more.

— 10th annual Scavenger Hunt Around Carson City Now Underway. Daily through May 31. In celebration of Historic Preservation and Archaeological Awareness month, the Carson City Historic Resource Commission has organized the 10th Annual Scavenger Hunt. This year’s hunt focuses on the history and culture of the capital city. The Commission crafted the hunt to be an event the family can do together. Participants will be given clues about people, places and events that are important to the community’s history. Using the clues, participants will research and locate the answers. Clues are available online. To ensure participants visit the various sites on the scavenger hunt, on-site photographs will be required with the submittals. Completed answers are due by 3:00 p.m. May 31, 2019. Answers may be submitted in person at 108 East Proctor Street or emailed to planning@carson.org.

— Friday Morning Walk: Conestoga Trail-West End hosted by Muscle Powered. 9 a.m. Join Muscle Powered for its weekly one hour Friday walks to enjoy Nevada outdoors around Carson City! Meet at the Powerline Road at 79-83 Conestoga Drive, 1/4 mile from Imus Road on Conestoga Drive. This is a dirt road. There is a slight elevation going up the dirt road at the beginning but from there it is mostly leveled. All walks are 1 to 2 miles with duration of 1 hour with usually negligible elevation gain, and frequently on paved or smooth paths. — State museum in Carson City to unveil Transcontinental Railroad exhibit Friday. Noon. The completion of the transcontinental railroad in the spring of 1869 changed America forever, dramatically reducing the time and cost for people and goods to move across country and accelerating the western expansion of the industrial revolution. This Friday, May 10, the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City will unveil a major new exhibit: “The Transcontinental Railroad: What a Difference it Made.” The exhibit debuts in the museum’s Jacobsen Interpretive Center exactly 150 years to the day of the Golden Spike Ceremony at Promontory Summit in Utah. Two reenactment ceremonies will be taking place at the railroad museum, one at noon and one at 2 p.m. A number of other activities, food trucks, and more is scheduled from Friday as well. The museum exhibit will also feature the V&T locomotives Inyo and Dayton, both of which have been used in film and exhibitions to portray the locomotives present at Promontory in 1869.

— Greenhouse Project Carson City Mother's Day plant sale begins. 2:30 p.m. This weekend, grab mom and the family and come on out to the annual Mother’s Day Plant Sale hosted by The Greenhouse Project, located on the campus of Carson High School. Due to the event’s growing popularity, the sale is expanding to both Friday, May 10, 2:30 to 5 p.m. and Saturday, May 11, 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The plant sale is a perfect family and educational outing with Full Circle Compost, Monarch Society and others on site offering extensive gardening knowledge and a one-stop experience. The plants offered for sale range from fruits and vegetables to flowers, both perennial and annual varieties ideal for Summer growing. The sale takes place at Green Central, the name for TGP’s original site on Carson High School’s campus. This designation distinguishes between that site and The Foothill Garden, located on Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center’s campus. All sales continue TGP’s work of providing agriculture education to students, while providing fresh produce to the community’s food insecure. — Experience Virtual Reality at the Carson City Library. 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. Join the Carson City Library to experience Virtual Reality! Using the latest technology, Virtual Reality allows you to experience new places and situations in a computer simulated world. Discover what it’s like to see dinosaurs up close, view art from around the world in a single museum, or blast alien ships in a virtual world. Must be at least 13 years or old to participate. — 2019 Carson City RSVP Spring Celebration and Carnival. 5 to 10 p.m. Celebrating more than three decades of rides, games and fun, 2019 marks the 34th year that Nevada Rural Counties RSVP will host its Spring Celebration and Carnival at Mills Park in Carson City, now through Sunday. Come out and join us for live music, great food, and craft vendors, Plus the excitement of carnival rides and games designed for all ages. Come on out and treat Mom to a Special Mother’s Day weekend event. This year's event takes place at Mills Park. Carnival Hours: Friday May 10, 5 to 10 p.m. Saturday, May 11, 1 to 10 p.m. and Sunday, May 12, 1 to 8 p.m.

— 2019 Nevada Sharks softball fundraiser features beer and bräts at Carson City's Fuji Park. 6 p.m. Join Nevada Sharks Fastpitch for the 2019 Nevada Sharks Fundraiser: Beer and Bräts at the Fuji Park Exhibit Hall in Carson City on Friday, May 10. This is a 21-plus event with all you can eat and drink, music, a door prize, a silent auction, and raffles to include the raffle of a Henry Rifle this year. The event begins at 6 p.m. Tickets are available right now from any Nevada Sharks 2019 players or will also be available at the door. Carson Girls Softball is a non-profit organization committed to providing young ladies, ages 3-18, in the Carson City area the opportunity to play recreational fastpitch softball in an organized environment.

— Weekly Open Mic Night at the Zen Den in A to Zen Gift Shop. 6 p.m. Open Mic Night is held at A to Zen Gift Shop on the Zen Den Stage. All talents, creative projects welcome. — Dance with Live Music at the Carson City Senior Center. 6:30 p.m. Dance with Live Music at the Carson City Senior Center! Kick up your dancing shoes and enjoy the live music of The Grumpy Old Men Band at the Carson City Senior Center, 911 Beverly Drive, on Friday, May 10, 6:30 to 9 p.m. Admission is $10 per person, open to all ages. — Blu Jaz to perform at Carson City's Bella Fiore Wines this Friday and Saturday. 7:30 p.m. Blu Jaz will perform this Friday and Saturday, May 10-11, at Bella Fiore Wines in Carson City. The four-piece band has quite a following. Blu Jaz performa a steady diet of blues and jazz coupled with a few dance upbeat songs. They're becoming somewhat a fixture at Bella Fiore Wines, located at 224 S. Carson Street in the McFadden Plaza. The band consists of Myke Smith, on saxes, Bradley Harris, guitarist and harmonica, Paul Bonaldi, on drums and Tim Goldsmith on bass.

— Western Nevada Theatre's 'Crazy for You’ hits Carson City stage Friday. The Western Nevada Musical Theatre Company presents Gershwin's Tony-winning Broadway hit, “Crazy for You” at the Carson City Community Center beginning tonight and running weekends through May 19. Get your tickets now for this hilariously heartwarming, tap-happy, family friendly gorgeous show, playing on Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m., May 10-19. — The Carson Comedy Club at the Carson Nugget Presents Comedian Travis Nelson. 8 p.m. Travis has made a name for himself touring across the United States and Canada bouncing between comedy clubs, theaters, colleges, cruise ships, and a million different bar gigs. As well as being a host of the popular "Docu-Commentary podcast, he regularly performs on military bases with the Laugh Catchers Comedy Tour, Boob Tour for Breast Cancer, Raise the Woof for the SPCA. Travis has performed in the Seattle International Comedy Competition, the Cape Fear Comedy Festival, the Westside Comedy Showdown in Santa Monica, won "Best of the Fest" at the Burbank Comedy Festival, and recently made it into the semi-finals round of the World Series of Comedy as one of the top 8 comics out of 101 selected for the Main Event. — U.S. Post Office Food Collection Saturday. Leave you non-perishable food by your post office box for collection on Saturday for the annual Postal Food Drive. Also, Ron Wood Familly Resource Center is looking for volunteers to help with the food drive. Each year the Ron Wood Center receives several pounds of non-perishable food from the postal service collection to assist our community with emergency food. Volunteers are need on Saturday, 1 to 7 p.m. and especially from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The Ron Wood Family Resource Center is located at 2621 Northgate Lane No. 49, Carson City. — Volunteer to help restore Carson City and Mills Park Railroad. 8 a.m. With the goal of returning the railroad to operation this summer, the Carson City Railroad Association will be hosting Saturday track repair work sessions in Mills Park. CCRA would like to extend an invitation to any able-bodied volunteer willing to be a Gandy Dancer for a few hours on the Carson City and Mills Park Railroad. The Carson and Mills Park Railroad, located in Mills Park, has delighted passengers in Carson City since 1982. Operated by CCRA volunteers, the two-foot gauge amusement railroad typically carries passengers during summer weekends. Over the past several years, deterioration resulting from severe weather, deferred maintenance, and a limited pool of volunteers have at times limited the operations of the railroad. It was closed for repairs in summer 2018. The first repair session is this Saturday, May 11. Work will occur on the worst 400 feet of track in the middle of Mills Park. Tasks generally include raising the rail, digging out the rotten ties, placing ballast (rock), driving bolts, and setting the rail back into gauge. Work generally occurs from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Participants will receive tickets for free train rides for the remainder of the summer. This work session is open to interested participants and you do not need to sign-up, but you may be asked to sign a waiver of liability as requested by Carson City. We do ask participants to wear longs pants, long sleeves, closed toed shoes and to bring gloves, a hat, and sunscreen. There is a limited supply of shovels and other tools, so bringing your own is also encouraged. Water and will be on hand, but participants are also encouraged to bring their own food and water. — Kid’s Fishing Day at Baily Pond, Fuji Park. 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Shake a stick and get a fish on. Kids must be 12 years and under, may catch up to 3 trouts, fishing rods will be provided for kids who do not have one (as well as bait, hooks and sinkers.) — Muscle Powered's Saturday Hike to Brunswick Canyon Road along Carson River. 9 a.m. Meet at Brunswick Canyon Road and Deer Run road, 1 mile south of Highway 50 East, Carson City. Join Muscle Powered as we walk along the very actively-flowing river. Kingfishers, hawks, and waterfowl are often seen along this stretch of the river. Hike distance will range between 2-4 miles, depending on trail condition. Water and closed-toes shoes are REQUIRED. Hat and sunscreen recommended. This road is very sunny so hikers should bring two quarts of water. Although it is sunny, light-colored long-sleeved shirts are also recommended. Dog are not allowed on this hike.

Have you got your tickets yet? V&T Railway 2019 season begins with Mother’s Day train Saturday and Sunday. Kicking off its 2019 season, V&T Railway will hold a special Mother’s Day train on Saturday, May 11 and Sunday, May 12. Guests will experience a 24-mile round-trip ride through the historic Comstock, departing Carson City (Eastgate Depot) at 10 a.m. and will arrive in Virginia City at approximately 11:30 a.m., before returning to Carson at 4:15 p.m. Featuring 100-year-old Pullman coaches pulled by a heritage diesel locomotive, the ride will be fully narrated, allowing guests to experience the Old West during this pre-season, round-trip ride. Prior to departing the depot, guests will enjoy free mimosas, extravagant pastries and moms on board will receive a long-stemmed rose on their return to Carson. During the ride, guests will see several historic sites including abandoned mine shafts and a possible glimpse of the regions wild mustangs while passing through two tunnels during the trip. Once in Virginia City, families can enjoy sightseeing, historic tours, dining, shopping and much more before returning to Carson City. — Family Fun Saturday: Nevada Wildflowers at the Nevada State Museum. 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Learn how to identify wildflowers. Discover the parts of all flowers. Explore the unique features of local wildflowers in a lab setting. Create a unique fabric wall hanging by pounding flowers into fabric. Everyone is welcome, advanced registration is not necessary. $8. 600 North Carson Street, Carson City.

— State Capitol Guided Tour. 10:30 a.m. Guided tours by docents from the Nevada State Museum will take place at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. every Saturday. Tours typically take an hour and include both the exterior of the building, nearby memorials as well as the interior of the building. Tours are available for up to 20 people on a first-come, first-served basis. The building includes numerous historic artifacts that range from portraits of past Nevada governors to sculptures to historical items showcased during Nevada’s Sesquicentennial celebration. The Capitol remains open to the public Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Guided tours of up to 20 people can be arranged in advance by calling the Nevada State Museum’s Education Program at 775-687-4810, ext. 237. 101 North Carson Street, Carson City.

— FISH to Hold Thrift Store Upcycling Event at Due Sorella’s Early Farmers’ Market. 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Upcycling means to reuse discarded objects or material in such a way as to create a product of higher quality or value than the original. FISH thrift store sales are a major source of revenue for this local non-profit dedicated to improving the lives of northern Nevadans. Its stores are also a great source of many items useful to those who create interesting and valuable household furnishings, clothing and art objects through the process of “upcycling.” We invite the community to visit the FISH booth at the Early Farmers’ Market event at Due Sorella (Two Sisters) on Saturday, May 11 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. It’s a great opportunity to learn more about FISH and its mission, said Jim Peckham, FISH Executive Director. — Trail Yoga Hike offered by Carson City Parks and Recreation. 9 to 11 a.m. Join Carson City Parks, Recreation & Open Space on Saturday, May 11 for a moderately difficult one-mile guided hike up Prison Hill to learn about local history and ecology. At the top, enjoy the view while Community Yogi leads beginner yoga! Please wear sturdy shoes for the hike, bring water, and bring a mat if possible. Meet us at the Dead Truck Canyon Trail head at Silver Saddle Ranch (2648 Carson River Road).

— Carson City Public Works to host May open house. 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Carson City Public Works will host an open house Saturday, May 11 with the department pulling all the stops to make sure there's plenty of activities and fun things to do for families. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the public works main facility, 3505 Butti Way off of Fairview. The open house will feature equipment tours, informational displays, raffle prizes, games, bounce houses, duck races and more. What's more, the open house will provide a great opportunity to learn about those services that keep Carson City streets and various services including water, sewer, landfill, wastewater, flood mitigation, storm drain services and the JAC bus, operating as they do to meet the needs of residents. — Saturday Night Star Party. 7:30 to 9 p.m. The Jack C Davis Observatory hosts free star parties on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of the month year round, starting at 7:30 p.m. (except when there is snow on the roads). The evening starts with a lecture on one of numerous topics and concludes with guided star viewing by one of our astronomers. — Nevada Arts Council Presents: Facts and Figures. Daily, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Las Vegas artist Lolita Develay’s works consists mostly of oil paintings and watercolors executed in a trompe l’oeil (deceives the eye) intertwined with abstract features. She is currently exploring prevailing social values in American mainstream culture. These paintings embody her ultimate desire for lush surfaces and the luxury of time that allowed them to be created. — Student art show open at WNC’s Main Gallery at Carson City campus. Daily. The artistic talents of Western Nevada College students will be on display in the college art gallery for the next month. The 2019 Student Art Show will be shown through Wednesday, May 15 in the Bristlecone Building on WNC’s Carson City campus.The exhibit features juried artwork from WNC students who were enrolled in classes during the fall or are currently enrolled during the spring semester. Students will compete for first, second and third places in drawing, painting, collage, photography, graphic art, ceramics, sculpture and mixed media. Students will also have the opportunity to price and sell their artwork. WNC’s Main Gallery is located in the Bristlecone Building and is open to the public six days a week: Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

— Carson City art exhibition 'Creative Spark' features 32 area high school artists. The Capital City Arts Initiative hosts its exhibition, Creative Spark, at the Community Development Building, also known as the Brick, 108 E Proctor Street, Carson City. Thirty-two students from Carson, Dayton, Douglas, and Pioneer high schools have work in the exhibit. The free exhibition is available to the public now through May 29, 2019, Mondays through Fridays, 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Creative Spark includes a wide variety of art media including ceramics, collage, drawing, painting, and photography that show the diversity of the students’ creativity.

— Capital City Arts Initiative presents 'The Lay of the Land' at Carson City showing. The Capital City Arts Initiative presents an exhibition, "The Lay of the Land," by artist Fred Howland in the Community Center’s Sierra Room, 851 E William Street, Carson City. The exhibition runs now through June 30, 2019. Howland’s passion is to create a sense of time and place through his photographs. He returns to favorite sites to work, like Hope Valley and Genoa, returning to take repeat images in different seasons and lighting. His interest in landscapes go back to his New England roots where he was more comfortable in the outdoors than in school classrooms. The Sierra Room is open to the public during Carson City official meetings including the first and third Thursdays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and many afternoons, Monday through Thursday, 5 to 8 p.m.

— "Home Means Nevada" photo exhibit debut at the Nevada Legislature. The Nevada Arts Council is unveiling a new traveling photo exhibition, “Home Means Nevada” that will start its journey in the hallways of the Nevada Legislature during the 2019 session. The exhibition features the works of 15 contemporary photographers, but which echoes famous photographs and artwork from the late 1800s and early 1900s that helped spur protections for many of our nation’s national parks. The exhibit highlights some of the unique treasures found on federally managed lands across the state, from bighorns to Burning Man, to the ancient rock art and petroglyphs in the Gold Butte area. The exhibition will be displayed in the Senate hallway of the Nevada Legislature, 401 S. Carson St. in Carson City.
