Car Wash to benefit Carson City 50/70 baseball team trip to play in All-Star game

Carson City’s 50/70 All Star baseball team, is representing the State of Nevada in the inaugural national All Star tournament in Irvine, Calif.
The tournament is from July 19th thru July 26th. In order for the team to make the trip they are looking for sponsors to help pay for expenses. They are also going to have a car wash at Carson Dodge Chrysler Jeep, on June 29, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

July 13, 2013 (All day) The Sierra Nevada Bass Club sponsored the Topaz Open over Father's Day Weekend (June 15-16) at Topaz Landing/Marina and Lodge/Casino. With four boats and 7 anglers making the trip and all but one managed to catch legal fish to bring to the scale during the two day event.
Carson City Sheriff's Office reports increase in vehicle burglaries
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Mon, 06/17/2013 - 9:11amThe Carson City Sheriff's Office reports an uptick in vehicle burglaries around town and asks residents to take pro-active measures to avoid becoming victims.
According to Sgt. Darrin Sloan, the sheriff's office looks at each case to identify patterns to help thwart this type of crime, but lately, patterns are not showing themselves.
There are, however, numerous vehicle burglary cases that have aspects in common, including unlocked doors, open windows and valuables left in plain view, said Sloan in a news release.

Women can never have enough purses and this will be a way to have some incredible purses at a fraction
of the retail cost. All funds raised help provide meals for our local senior citizens. The Senior Center has served nearly 92,000 meals in their FY 2011-2012.
The senior center is located at 911 Beverly Drive.

Two jailed after drug-fueled assault on Carson City officers
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Fri, 06/14/2013 - 10:16amTwo men were arrested early Friday morning in the 1800 block of Long Street in Carson City and face multiple charges, including battery on police officers and resisting arrest. A 20-year-old Carson City man later told officers both had been under the influence of LSD and marijuana.
According to the arrest report, deputies were dispatched to the area of 1800 East Long Street late Thursday night after reports came in of a man screaming and stating he had a bloody nose.

Lyon County to receive $1.9 million in federal money for public land use
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Thu, 06/13/2013 - 2:25pmLyon County will receive $1.9 million from the U.S. Department of Interior for revenue generated on public land, Sen. Harry Reid announced Thursday. Douglas County will receive $615,397 and Carson City $116,138.
Statewide funds totaling $23.3 million will be received from from the Department, which collects about $14 billion in revenue annually from commercial activities on federal lands, such as oil and gas leasing, livestock grazing and timber harvesting.

CARSON CITY — Gov. Brian Sandoval has signed into law a bill that will help crack down on underage tobacco users in Nevada.
Beginning in October of this year, Nevada counties will have the option to adopt ordinances that would impose fines on individuals under the age of 18 for the possession or use of tobacco products. Senate Bill 177 was introduced by Senator James Settelmeyer of Minden.

Amodei amendment would shift funds to VA Regional Offices with largest backlogs
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Tue, 06/04/2013 - 4:57pmNevada Congressman Mark Amodei offered a successful amendment on Tuesday to the Military Construction, Veterans Affairs Appropriations bill for next year, which would shift $44 million for mandatory overtime to the VA Regional Offices with the worst disability claims backlogs — greater than 365 days.
Of the 15 VAROs on the list, Reno’s backlog, with an average claims process of 504 days, is the second worst in the nation behind Los Angeles (576 days). The amendment passed the House by a bipartisan vote of 248 to 172.

Five arrested in Saturday night baby shower melee in Carson City

The Nevada Highway Patrol and the Douglas County Sheriff's Office was called in as backup as the party in the 1700 block of North Curry Street grew out of control, with three known gang members pushing, shoving and threatening officers.

Carson City authorities seek help in finding pickup that crashed into restaurant patio early Sunday
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Mon, 06/03/2013 - 8:51amThe Carson City Sheriff's Office is looking for an older model Chevy or Ford pickup that slammed through an iron fence into the patio area of Firkin and Fox early Sunday morning causing extensive damage.
Video surveillance shows the event happening at 3:02 a.m. The pickup is described as a yellow 1970s or early 1980s model Chevy or Ford, in good condition, with a white or cream stripe and chrome highlights. The vehicle should have driver side front and front quarter panel damage.

Carson City woman charged with murder in November death of 18-month old toddler

Brittany Michelle Paugh turned herself into the Carson City Sheriff's Office Thursday. She is being held without bail. Charges include first degree murder, child abuse, child abuse causing death, second degree murder with child neglect and child abuse with substantial harm. The toddler died of significant trauma to the brain.
Sheriff Ken Furlong said the arrest came after an extensive investigation that involved medical specialists outside the state.

June 2, 2013 - 9:00am Introducing Grace Works, or as others have called it “The Church has left the Building!” This is a Sunday when area churches show God’s love through providing services, rather than going to services. It is an event that has been going on in several other communities across the US, involving thousands of people on a given Sunday. The First Presbyterian Church started it here in Carson City two years ago; last year Ministerios Una Puerta Al Camino ( The Church of the Door to the Way) joined them. Over 150 people participated.
Human Trafficking Bill Passes in Nevada Assembly

CARSON CITY — A bill that would protect victims of human trafficking was approved 41-0 Thursday by the Nevada Assembly.
The bill requires officers to take certain actions when they encounter possible victims of human trafficking. It also requires the state Department of Education to develop and distribute material relating to the trafficking of children.

Bill Would Regulate Use of Hydraulic Fracturing

CARSON CITY — The Assembly Committee on Natural Resources, Agriculture and Mining met Thursday to discuss a bill that would require the development of a program to regulate the use of hydraulic fracturing in Nevada.
Commonly known as “fracking,” hydraulic fracturing is a process in which an amalgam of water, sand and chemicals is pressurized and injected into the ground to break up rock formations. Fracking can be used in the retrieval of natural gas and oil from deep beneath the earth’s surface, which is exactly what Houston-based Noble Energy Inc. intends to do in Elko County.

Just imagine an SUV trek for the entire family that traces the same route used by 8,000 early pioneers in more than 1,500 covered wagons from 1849 to 1852 that brought a flood of immigrants to California, most of whom had the Gold Rush fever.

All boats entering Lake Tahoe without a Lake Tahoe wire inspection seal are required to go through a mandatory inspection and purchase an inspection sticker as part of the public, private, multi-agency effort to protect Lake Tahoe from aquatic invasive species (AIS). Food for Thought gets help from Carson Nugget to feed needy children this summer

“We were in need of a kitchen to make lunches for children in our program and the Carson Nugget stepped right up to the plate and agreed to allow us to use their kitchen facilities,” said Stephanie Gardner, executive director, Food for Thought. “This is great because it will allow us to continue this much needed program during the summer months when school is not in session.”

May 27, 2013 - 11:00am The Vietnam Veterans of America, Carson City Area Chapter 388 invite you attend a Memorial Day Service on Monday, May 27, beginning at 11 AM at the Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Fernley.
The service will be an hour long. Immediately following the service, there will be an unveiling of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. The shrine lists the names of 151 young men from Nevada who gave their lives in Vietnam. Adjacent to that are the names of eight nurses who also gave their lives in Vietnam while they were there caring for our troops.
Nevadans to Vote on Mining Tax Cap in 2014

Motorcycle crash at freeway off ramp at College Parkway
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Wed, 05/22/2013 - 1:55pmA Care Flight helicopter was ordered Wednesday after a motorcycle crashed in the southbound lane of the Carson City freeway near the off ramp at College Parkway. The accident was reported at around 1:40 p.m.
The condition of the motorcyclist is unknown. According to emergency dispatchers via scanner a motorist called 911 for help after the motorcyclist was reportedly found in rocks on the side of the road.

Higher education cuts would weaken Nevada’s economic development

Saturday’s committee vote in the Nevada Legislature would result in a General Fund cut of 11.42 percent in the budget of Western Nevada College. This comes on top of more than 27 percent in reductions over the past five years, which led to a significant loss of academic programs, faculty, staff, and services.

Brianna’s Law Passes Assembly in Vote of 29-9

The bill would mandate the collection of DNA samples from individuals arrested on felony charges. It was named for Brianna Denison, a young college student who was murdered in Reno in 2008. SB243 passed the Senate by a unanimous vote last month. During today’s vote on the Assembly floor, seven Democrats and two Republicans voted against the measure. Only a few Assembly members commented on the bill prior to the vote.

Bill would help children with food allergy attacks at school

While it hasn't gotten a lot of press attention and isn't shrouded in controversy, SB453 is designed to protect children at school if they suffer from a food allergy attack or are stung by a bee and have an allergic reaction.

Carson City Cops and Kids open house lives up to its 'safest party on the street' reputation

More than 2,000 attended the four-hour event, which featured games, prizes and demonstrations by Carson City Sheriff's Office patrol officers and personnel. The event is designed for children and their parents to get quality meet-and-greet face time with law enforcement personnel.

Search and Rescue Geocache Adventure a Big Success

Entrants of all ages, using GPS and maps competed in a modern day treasure hunt in various public areas of Carson City.

Man jailed for waving machete in dispute over Jeep
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Fri, 05/17/2013 - 10:43amA Carson City man faces a felony charge of assault with a deadly weapon after allegedly swinging a machete in a dispute with his brother and another man over a vehicle.
Jesus Guardron-Patino was jailed May 14 after being arrested at 9:25 p.m. in the 200 block of Jeanell Drive.
According to the arrest report, officers responded to the area after a report called in of a man hitting the ground and a brick building with a sword. Officers detained Guardron-Patino and made contact with two men, one of whom is the brother of Guardron-Patino.
