Carson City Supervisor Shelly Aldean not running for reelection
Submitted by admin on Thu, 02/02/2012 - 12:11pmCarson City Supervisor Shelly Aldean announced that she will not be seeking reelection to the Ward 2 seat she has held since 2003.
Aldean was appointed to the board in January 2003 after the death of Supervisor Jon Plank. She ran and won elections in 2004 and 2008.
Maurice White, first vice chair of the Carson City Republican Central Committee, plans to announce his intentions to run for the Ward 2 seat at a fundraiser on Feb. 11.

TONIGHT - January 13, 2012, there will be a fundraiser at High Sierra Brewery in Carson City from 5 - 8 PM. A percentage of the sales will go toward their expenses and there will be raffles.

January 6, 2012 (All day) Wonders Soccer Academy from Carson City is collecting old cell phones and ink cartridges through January 30, 2012 for the purpose of team fundraising and help meet the needs of the players. Wonders Soccer will receive money for each item collected during the fundraiser. The items will be turned in to a company that specializes in recycling and refurbishing used technology.

First, there is the story about Carson City being recognized as a top ranked digital city, which we published last month. Then there is the report about the Gardnerville man who was shot by a Douglas County Sheriff's deputy next to his own grave site, an apparent act of "suicide by cop." There's also the story about the fundraiser at J's Bistro to benefit the Dayton Food Pantry that we had yesterday. It reminds me of that line from the movie "All The President's Men" where they talked about a new feature for the paper, yesterday's weather forecast, "for those who got drunk and slept all day."

In politics, Judge Todd Russell finalized the state's redistricting case, refusing to add language allowing current office holders from using the words “incumbent” or “re-elect” in their campaigns if their districts had changed. None of the parties in the case objected to the new political boundaries, which closes this chapter of political wrangling.
Secretary of State Ross Miller filed a suit to force conservative advocacy group Citizen Outreach to register with the state and file contribution and expense reports. Miller cited that the group ran ads targeting Assembly Speaker John Oceguera during the 2010 election, which means the group must comply with laws governing political activities.
Although Citizen Outreach has not responded to the suit, its president Chuck Muth has a column today attacking Assembly Minority Leader Pete Goicoechea for not being conservative enough. Goicoechea, a Republican from Eureka, announced that he will run for state senate.

December 13, 2011 (All day) Js’ Old Town Bistro will host a Spaghetti Feed on Tuesday, December 13th, from 5 – 8pm to benefit the Dayton Food Pantry. $10.00 buys a spaghetti dinner, with $5.00 going directly to the Food Pantry.
Last month nearly 3000 people sought help from The Pantry, including 127 new families, a significant increase over last year. That number is expected to rise even more as Christmas approaches.

Restoring and protecting habitat for foraging elk and other wildlife headline a list of 2011 grants for Nevada from the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.
The RMEF grants total $42,700 and affect Carson City, Churchill, Douglas, Elko, Lyon, Nye, Washoe and White Pine counties. One project has statewide interest, affecting teachers and students across Nevada.

Dayton 5K Race Results Announced

Dayton’s first Healthy Communities Coalition 5K Walk/Run on May 14 attracted 50 contestants, plus 20 volunteers from Stand Tall and Dayton Task Force. The 5K fundraiser for Stand Tall’s youth leadership teams and Dayton Resource Bank resulted in $811 for the two local youth programs.
The event was a fun way for the community to exercise and to join together for two good causes. Organizers Lavurne Jeffreys and Star Erickson said they look forward to making this an annual event.
