As a result, they could miss out on up to $5,751 extra in their federal income tax refunds through the Earned Income Tax Credit, or EITC. Downtown Carson City lights up for Christmas

Downtown Carson City celebrated the start of the holiday season with the annual Silver and Snowflakes Festival of Lights.

Streets were closed off as throngs of people gathered in front of the state capitol to watch as the lights for the two giant Christmas trees were turned on.

Santa and Mrs. Claus arrived on the back of an antique fire truck, with Mayor Bob Crowell riding shotgun. After the state's trees were turned on, the crowd headed over to the First Presbyterian Church where the city's Christmas tree was turned on.

Nugget Project 2.0: RGJ fumbles story

I don't pay a lot of attention to the Reno Gazette-Journal for Carson City news. It's been years since they shut down their bureau here, and I haven't seen them do much original reporting about our city since then.

But I ran across this correction to their story on this week's Nugget Project meeting, and had to laugh. It's one thing to blow the original story, but the correction blows it, too.

Nugget Project 2.0: New plan breathes life into effort

Monday night's presentation of the new plan for the Carson City Center development to the Nugget Advisory Committee has put this much-criticized project back on track, even winning over some long-time opponents.

The new plan is different enough it needs a new name: Nugget Project 2.0.

First glance: New Nugget Project plan

Taking a look at the new plans for the Carson City Center/Nugget Project, there are several new things that stick out.

First, the announcement that partnership with P3 Development has been terminated because they could not come to an agreement. It was revealed earlier this summer that the the project partners switched architects because they weren't happy with what they were getting from P3. But now it seems P3 is out of the picture entirely. Not only was P3 slated to build the project, but it was supposed to handle the financing.

Book Review: 'The Messenger of Athens' story is charming if deadly

The Greek Isles have long been a staple of fiction writers, often with entertaining results. Anne Zouroudi's "The Messenger of Athens" (Little Brown an Co. 324 pages, $23.95) is one of the good ones.

The island of Thiminos is the scene of this crime novel where private investigator Hermes arrives to investigate the accidental death of young Irini, married to a fisherman whom she no longer loves. Seems she had fallen for Theo after watching him pass her house.

Book Review: 'Hero, the Life and Legend of Lawrence of Arabia' an excellent biography

Michael Korda's fine new biography, "Hero, the Life and Legend of Lawrence of Arabia," comes at a critical moment in the Arab world, with the U.S. foreign policy in shambles as Egyptians riot in the streets and Tunisians oust their leaders.

Most Americans probably are only familiar with T. E. Lawrence as portrayed by Peter O'Toole in the David Lean film "Lawrence of Arabia," a fine biopic if not exactly the true, full story of Lawrence.

Marketing plan to help sell Nugget Project?

Posted in the comments on our last Nugget Project story, there appears to be the text of a marketing plan to help sell this project to the public.

The text was posted by Michael Douglass, the author of a Nevada Appeal guest column in favor of the project. He is also the brother of Tammy Westergard, who has been deeply involved in the project, first with the Office of Business Development, and now with the Carson City Library.

Here it is:

Nugget Project tidbits

There is an interesting discussion going on over at the Nevada Appeal site concerning the Nugget Project.

The story begins two week ago when Guy Farmer wrote a rather harsh column that slammed the Nugget Project. In response, last week there was a guest column by Michael Douglass criticizing Farmer's take on the subject.

Supervisors delay discussion on Nugget project agreement

An action item about an agreement involving the Nugget Project was pulled from the agenda at today's Carson City Board of Supervisors meeting, delaying a decision for two weeks.

Nugget Project: Meet the developer (updated)

The developer chosen for the Carson Nugget Redevelopment Project will be on hand tonight to answer questions about the project.

Rick Oshinski, CEO of Sacramento-based P3 Development, will appear before the Carson Nugget Development Advisory Committee tonight in the Community Center's Sierra Room.

Carson Now plans to show live video of the meeting, as well as hosting a discussion forum.

Many questions are sure to arise, concerning the details on the project and its scope, as well as the developer and how the company was chosen.

As I've been talking to people about this project, I've collected a number of questions, that I put together below.

Tammy Westergard leaving business development office for library position

Tammy Westergard is leaving her job as deputy director of the Carson City Office of Business Development to take a similar position at the Carson City Library.

The rumor has been floating around for a while, and Tammy confirmed it to me this morning.

Moving over to the library probably will not remove her entirely from the world of business development, considering the library's central role in the Nugget Project.

We will have more details on this change soon.
