UNR holiday book tree erected in Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center
Submitted by editor on Thu, 12/15/2011 - 2:33pmThe soaring atrium of the Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center at the University of Nevada, Reno has an unconventional tree on display this holiday season. Some would call it a green tree, not just because of its color, but because the tree is made entirely of recycled materials – old books.
The 9.5-foot tree was constructed using pre-1950 National Union Catalog books. The rarely used reference books made an ideal book tree, with their evergreen covers and gold lettering on the spine.

Witchcraft in Our Schools - 5:30PM Meeting Today at CMS
Submitted by Anonymous on Tue, 09/06/2011 - 9:07am
Event Date:
September 6, 2011 - 5:30pm The final Harry Potter movie is out this summer. It's a tale of magical kids attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, being empowered, and learning wicked things like Arithmacy, Potions, Care of Magical Creatures, and Quiddich. This makes some real-world parents uncomfortable. Children learning things we don't know, things beyond the "straight and narrow", things that empower them, is scary.

Book Review: Fareed Zakaria explains America no longer alone as superpower
Submitted by Sam Bauman on Mon, 07/18/2011 - 10:16amFareed Zakaria is a TV talk show who knows the complex world of economics, the Mideast and international politics. His book "The Post-American World, Release 2.0," paints a world where the United States is no longer the sole superpower. Not that superpowers are measured in size of armies but rather in economic sense.
Zakaria writes well and with a tremendous fund of knowledge, and while he paints a grim picture for the USA, he doesn't write the country off.
Movie Review: Harry Potter lives one more time at the Galaxy in Carson City
Submitted by Sam Bauman on Mon, 07/18/2011 - 10:07amOK, so I missed the first seven Harry Potter films and the J.K Rowling books that served as the basis for the series. Bad planning or no planning. So when the last of the series, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," opened at the Fandango Galaxy multiplex with three theaters showing the film simultaneous, in 2-D and 3-D, I figured time to catch up.

Moview Review: 'X Men: First Class' a hot and heavy fantasy film
Submitted by Sam Bauman on Sun, 06/12/2011 - 12:23pmI missed a couple of the "X Man" interations so I can't offer much in the way of comparisons, but world opening audience size was down from the last version. That said, 'X Man: First Class," now screening at the Fandango Galaxy multiplex in Carson City, is a film of its times, a melange of fast cuts, amazing technology which reveals its comic-book birthright with fantasy and some fact.

Movie Review: 'Thor' of the magic hammer alive and well
Submitted by Sam Bauman on Sat, 05/07/2011 - 5:39pmIt's hard to say whether the mythical adventure film "Thor" currently playing at the Fandango Galaxy in Carson City is the best adventure film since "Fast Five," or whether it is a messy marketing adaptation of Scandinavian myth with no logic and sense to the story other than luring the kids in.

Movie Review: "Scream 4" a merry film of slashing fun
Submitted by Sam Bauman on Sun, 04/17/2011 - 7:41amI did not have the luck to see the first three versions of the "Scream" franchise, so I can't compare "Scream 4" currently playing at the Fandango Galaxy multiplex in Carson City. Bill From Secretary Of State Could Net State $11 Million
Submitted by Nevada News Bureau on Fri, 04/15/2011 - 8:24pmCARSON CITY — Changing one word in a law could save Nevada up to $11 million.
Secretary of State Ross Miller has sponsored a bill that would change who is exempt from Nevada’s business license fee.
Right now, home-based businesses making less than $27,000 a year in net earnings are exempt from the requirement.
Miller would change the language to “a natural person” rather than the current “person,” since businesses have used this as an excuse to declare themselves exempt.
