CARSON CITY — Several bills that were introduced in the just-ended session of the Nevada Legislature didn’t get a chance to see the light of day in 2013. Here’s a look back on a few pieces of legislation that died this year:
Ward-only voting Republican Gov. Brian Sandoval vetoed legislation Tuesday that would have changed Reno’s and Sparks’ current voting system from citywide voting to ward-only voting, which would require voters to select the city council candidate who would represent the ward they live in.

Legislators Finish Five Bills in Brief Special Session

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Legislature reconvened for a brief a special session on Tuesday morning to finish up work on several bills that were not passed in time to meet Monday’s midnight deadline for the end of the 77th regular session.
Gov. Brian Sandoval ordered the 27th Special Session during the predawn hours of Tuesday. Legislators worked through the morning to pass five measures, including one that will allow the Board of County Commissioners in Clark County to raise the Sales and Use Tax in order to fund the hiring of additional police officers.

WNC Wildcats continue success; several players off to standout NCAA baseball programs

WNC baseball coach D.J. Whittemore has announced that five players from his 2013 team made up primarily of freshmen have been inked by Division I schools, while two others have signed with NCAA Division II powerhouse Dixie State College. The five join nine players from last year’s team who signed with Division I teams and eight from the 2011 squad.

Washoe School Tax Bill Heads to Sandoval

UPDATE: A bill that would give Washoe County Commissioners a one-time opportunity to raise sales and property taxes to fund capital improvements at many of the district’s aging public schools passed out of the Senate on Monday in a vote of 16-4. AB46 will now head to Gov. Brian Sandoval’s desk for a final signature.

Carson City schools superintendent, sheriff provide details of school lockdown

The student, who faces a criminal charge of filing a false report, confessed later to authorities that he had made the story up.

Washoe School Tax Bill Passes Assembly 32-8

Military Aircraft and Vehicle Museum to Open in Carson City

Cactus Air Force’s “Wings and Wheels Museum” will be a nonprofit, public museum dedicated to celebrating aviation and military history through preserving, restoring, displaying and use of US military aircraft and vehicles from WWII to present.

Carson City steps up saturation patrol for DUI drivers over Memorial Day weekend

For the holiday period stretch there will be heavy saturation patrols for DUI drivers, a DUI checkpoint, and enforcing underage drinking laws. The purpose of these activities is to ensure that drivers in Carson City are safe and sober going into and during the holiday weekend, said Carson City Sheriff's Office Sgt. Darrin Sloan.

Bill would help children with food allergy attacks at school

While it hasn't gotten a lot of press attention and isn't shrouded in controversy, SB453 is designed to protect children at school if they suffer from a food allergy attack or are stung by a bee and have an allergic reaction.

Legislative Money Panels Approve K-12 Spending Plan

The plan largely follows Gov. Brian Sandoval’s recommendations budget proposal for K-12 education, which also designates basic state support of about $5,500 per pupil over the next two years — an increase of about $200 over existing funding levels.

Carson City Symphony's Strings in the Schools led by Carson City Symphony Education Director Sue Jesch present a festival featuring the Music of Jay Ungar and Molly Mason on Saturday, May 11.
The concert will be at Empire Elementary School, 1260 Monte Rosa Drive, Carson City. It includes a workshop from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. for string players of all ages, a potluck lunch, and a public concert beginning at 3:00 p.m. Admission to the festival and the concert is free, donations welcome.

Carson City DA's Office, Carson Montessori students place Big Bad Wolf on Trial

As part of the Office's community outreach and partnership with local schools, the District Attorney's Office created the mock trial based on the story of the “Three Little Pigs” to teach students about the criminal justice system as well as increase critical thinking and reasoning skills, according to a news release.

Next month is Bike Month and there are plenty of activities planned in Carson City. We kick off on April 24 with Nevada Moves Day at the State Legislature.
Muscle Powered is organizing exhibits in the front foyer of the legislative building highlighting Nevada groups working for better walking and biking. Participants include the Reno Bike Project, Safe Routes to Schools, the Carson Valley Trails Association and more.

On Wednesday, 400 children of all ages got to meet those adults in the field who maintain public safety. The Spring Safety Fair, a partnership through the Carson City Sheriff’s Office and Boys and Girls Clubs of Western Nevada, was a success on all levels.

Life can change in a moment. At 8:56 on September 6, 2011, a deeply disturbed man with an automatic weapon stepped out of his car outside a Carson City, Nevada restaurant. In the moment that followed, he fired nearly 80 rounds – spraying bullets across a parking lot and into an IHOP packed with breakfast customers – killing four people and wounding 7 others before taking his own life.

Nevada Campus Carry Bill Gains Support

While K-12 schools are currently protected under federal law as “gun-free zones,” the Senate Judiciary Committee met this morning to discuss SB 223, a bill that proposes employees and faculty members be permitted to carry concealed weapons on higher education campuses.
