CARSON CITY – Nevada state Republican Party officials today announced they expect all the major GOP candidates will visit the state ahead of the Feb. 4 first in the West caucus.

The Nevada GOP is also introducing social media into the process, using the Google and Twitter platforms to report the caucus results beginning about 5 p.m. that day from 16 of the state’s 17 counties.

Deven Jerome King, 20, and Michael Christopher Giorgi, 20, both from Carson City, were arrested Thursday for felony possession of an explosive device after they admitted to making dry ice bombs out of plastic soda bottles and throwing them into the front yard of a former roommate.

CARSON CITY — NV Energy is studying shipping solar and geothermal power to California. But regulators and consumer advocates are questioning the mammoth project.

The museum is always a place of wonder; a time machine that transports you to places where there were no smart phones or computers, let alone electricity and flushing toilets. CARSON CITY – Five finalists for Nevada’s top public education job were submitted today to the state Board of Education.

The names of three finalists will be forwarded to Gov. Brian Sandoval for his final selection after interviews are conducted by the Board of Education next month.

The five finalists, picked from 15 applicants who sought the position of state superintendent of public instruction, are:

A new branch of the Carson City Library opened Thursday in the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada — a branch powered by robotics.

The Carson City Board of Supervisors will appoint new officers for the city's Redevelopment Authority at it meeting next Thursday.

President Barack Obama visited Las Vegas today on a swing through the West, talking up energy development to create jobs and reduce the country’s dependence on foreign oil.

In comments delivered at the United Parcel Service hub on East Arby Lane, President Obama said development of natural gas reserves would serve both these purposes.

The president jogged out to loud, enthused cheers from a clearly friendly crowd.

Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki told attendees of Wednesday's networking breakfast sponsored by the Northern Nevada Development Authority that he wants the 3.6 billion eyes that the Olympic Winter Games draws focused on one place in 2022: the Reno-Tahoe area.

CARSON CITY – State Sen. Greg Brower, R-Reno, has asked Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto why an outside legal firm was retained to defend the state against a freeway construction dispute. Legal costs charged to the state will total $6 million by the end of an arbitration hearing set for next month.

CARSON CITY – Treasurer Kate Marshall announced today that a request for proposals for a manger to oversee a new investment program using up to $50 million from the state Permanent School Fund has been issued by the Nevada Capital Investment Corporation (NCIC) Board of Directors.

The FBI has fingered a 74-year-old Nevada man as the %u201CFedora Bandit%u201D responsible for robbing a number of banks in the region in late 2009 and early 2010, including hitting the same Bank of the West twice in Grass Valley.

An arrest warrant was issued Tuesday for Mound House resident David Griffith Osborne, who wasn't hard to locate.

Carson City Sheriff's deputies arrested Josephina Rodriguez, 43, a Carson City woman, at just after 9 p.m. Tuesday at the 3800 block of South Carson Street. Rodriguez was arrested for felony burglary. She is alleged to have stolen ten items from the Carson City Kohls, where she was assigned to clean over a period of several months. She claimed were clothes for her grandson. Bail is set at $2,500.

Nevada State Treasurer Kate Marshall wants Nevada to yank a little-noticed exemption for the federal mortgage giants. It would raise an estimated $5 million a year in taxes, according to the state's tax department.

CARSON CITY – A panel of lawmakers today began a review of the state’s 45-year-old formula for funding public education with an eye towards addressing the needs of the state’s urban districts as they work to educate special education students, English-language learners and children in poverty.

The panel is still searching for funding for a study to help in the review, however. The failure to find private funding for a study could jeopardize any meaningful review in this interim, lawmakers were told.

While some reactions to the State of the Union Speech fell predictably along partisan lines, three members of Nevada's congressional delegation echoed President Barack Obama's call for job creation and his plea for members of Congress to work together.
