In light of Governor Sisolak’s announcement to close all K-12 schools in Nevada, the Nevada Department of Agriculture is implementing the first of a two-tier strategy to mitigate National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program interruptions.

Due to the unprecedented events surrounding COVID-19, Governor Sisolak has closed all schools in Nevada as well as cancelled all extracurricular events. This means that the annual Father-Daughter Ball at Carson High School, scheduled for April 3, has been cancelled.

Gov. Steve Sisolak said that while a testing kit shortage makes it impossible to tell how much coronavirus has affected Nevada, the pace of the virus’ spread around the world means Nevada must “act quickly” to slow it — including taking drastic measures such as shutting state offices, limiting the size of gatherings and encouraging employees to work from home if possible.

Due to increasing concern around COVID-19, Nevada Gov. Sisolak, after consulting with local and state agencies and officials, has decided all school in Nevada will be closed starting Monday, March 16, through Friday, April 3. With this direction, All Carson City School District schools will be closed for three weeks starting Monday, March 16.

As some of you may already know, Governor Sisolak today in a press conference ordered the closure of all Nevada K-12 schools until April 6. We will be following the guidance of our state government and closing our doors for the same time period to protect our Club members and our community.

It was standing room only earlier this week at Tuesday evening's Carson City School Board meeting thanks to a budget proposal that ruffled more than a few feathers.

The Carson City School District will "aggressively disinfect" its schools beginning Friday through Monday in an effort to minimize illness regarding the coronavirus, according to Superintendent Richard Stokes.

The Carson City School Board voted unanimously Tuesday evening during their meeting to rezone Fremont Elementary School students to Eagle Valley Middle School to alleviate population strain.

The results are in. The National Geographic Society named Mori Kurland, an eighth grader at Carson Middle School in Carson City, as one of the semifinalists eligible to compete in the 2020 National Geographic GeoBee State competition on Friday, March 27, 2020.

Fourteen area middle and high school students were awarded cash prizes for their entries into the Fleet Reserve Association Branch (FRA) No. 137 Annual Essay-writing contest on Feb. 29 at a luncheon sponsored by the branch Auxiliary in Carson City, held in their honor.

The Carson City School District, on behalf of the Carson City Schools Foundation, is pleased to announce winners of mini-grants from Fall 2019 and Spring 2020. The competitive process garners dozens of applications from district educators each semester. In addition to the mini-grants, the foundation has also awarded $2,000 to $3,000 grants for a Department, School or Grade-level projects.

Heading into the start of the work week, temperatures will be comparatively cool compared to last week with daytime highs near 55. The Greenhouse Project will be in the spotlight at a Carson City Democratic luncheon, plus fitness events, West Coast swing dance lessons at Carson Lanes and a Carson City Parks and Rec led full moon hike up Dead Truck Canyon. Carson City School District wishes to assure all families that they are in daily communication with the local, state and national health authorities on the status of the Corona Virus (COVID-19).

The school district has a Pandemic Response Plan which is supported by the Carson City Health & Human Services Department. The plan includes prevention efforts, surveillance of student and staff illness, communications, continuity of learning and coordination with local services.

The first Monday of March should bring clearing skies and sunshine after a weekend of wild weather. Activities include a discussion and documentary viewing regarding the high cost of pharmaceutical drugs, plus Read Across America storytime for young children at the Carson City Library, fitness events, West Coast swing dance lessons at Carson Lanes and more.

Congratulations to the Carson High School Bowling Team who are the Northern Nevada champs after the team beat Reed High School 24 to 21 to win the HDIBP championship Wednesday at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno.

The 20th Annual Snowshoe Thompson Ski & Snowshoe Celebration returns once again to the Sierra on Saturday, March 7 at 9:00 am, at the Lake Tahoe Golf Course in South Lake Tahoe.

Snow or no snow, event activities begin with a guided tour starting at 9:30 am with Norwegian native and longboard ski expert Nina MacLeod, who will also give a longboard ski demonstration if sufficient snow is present. Attendees should bring their own snowshoes and cross country skis.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the South Carson Complete Streets Project groundbreaking ceremony, the International Film Festival held Friday and Saturday at the Carson City Community Center and Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada celebrate National Girl Scout Cookie weekend with door-to-door cookie sales. Somebody simply must stop the bleed, and Sierra Lutheran High School is responding to that challenge. Recently, the faculty and staff of the Christian college prep high school in Carson City became the first schoolwide staff in Douglas County to take part in the national bleed kit training being promoted by The National Stop the Bleed Campaign.

Each year, National Read Across America Day is observed on March 2, the birthday of children’s book author Ted Geisel, also known as Dr. Seuss. In celebration, many schools often dedicate an entire week as “Reading Week.” In Carson City, grade-schoolers at Fremont Elementary School got to celebrate a week prior to the observance with several community partners and local dignitaries, who visited classrooms to read to students.

More springlike weather around the capital city is ahead Ash Wednesday with a daytime high near 65. Events include a Real ID town hall meeting at the Carson City DMV, the economic impact of pro soccer in Northern Nevada will be featured at NNDA's Business Edge at Casino Fandango, Carson City Schools offers the first of three pre-kindergarten programs for parents and will also host a separate strategic plan meeting. Meanwhile, Carson Tahoe Health and Wellness hosts a yoga class, plus Salsa dancing at Yaple's Ballroom, country and pop dancing at Carson Lanes, a safety workshop for women and more.

Carson City Supervisor Lori Bagwell, local Hookah Lounge business owner Nathaniel Killgore and resident Aaron Sims have all thrown their hats in the ring for the position of Carson City Mayor. Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell is not seeking reelection after 11 years.

The Dayton Regional Advisory Board will be discussing a new development plan for the Sage Vista subdivision at their upcoming March 4 meeting.

The Carson City School District is asking parents to mark their calendars for Monday, March 2, to begin registering children who will be 5-years-old by Sept. 30, 2020, and eligible for Kindergarten for the coming 2020-2021 school year.

After a gangbuster start to the winter season, a lot of us in Tahoe are wondering where all the snow has gone. Sitting here at the end of February with snowpack numbers dwindling, snow lovers are chomping at the bit, waiting to see the storm track shift back our way.

Nevada Commission for Women and the Nevada Women’s Suffrage Celebration Committee formed to help facilitate collaboration among organizations in Nevada to celebrate and commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment. As part of her Carson High School Senior Project graduation requirement, student, and committee member, Chloe Walt is working to educate Nevadans on the suffrage movement and the historic importance of the ratification of the 19th Amendment.
