Carson City events and happenings for Saturday, February 29

Happy Saturday Carson City, and happy leap year! We’ve got a lot of great events through the weekend, including the three-day film festival happening this weekend at the Community Center! Check below to find the full list of events through Sunday, and be sure to grab a jacket because it’s getting chilly!

Saturday, February 29
Denim and Diamonds Fundraiser at Carson City's Casino Fandango to Benefit Austin's House (all day). The 2020 Denim and Diamonds fundraiser is set for Saturday, Feb. 29 at Casino Fandango's Grand Ballroom in Carson City. All proceeds benefit Austin's House, our local non-profit children's shelter. The shelter cares for children ages infant to 18 who have been removed from their homes due to neglect or abuse.

Nobility Trauma Clean-Up to host grand opening in Carson City (all day). Nobility Trauma Clean-up LLC., which focuses on cleaning properties associated with death, hoarding, methamphetamine labs and general trauma, will host its grand opening on Feb. 29 at its new Carson City location, located at 2701 Conestoga Dr. No. 123.

International Film Weekend at the Carson City Community Center's Bob Boldrick Theater (all day). Join us for the 2020 Carson City International Film Weekend, sponsored by the Carson City Culture & Tourism Authority, Bob Boldrick Theater and the Friends of the Carson City Library. The independent film competition winners will be shown as part of the film on Feb. 28 and 29 on 851 E. William St.

University of Nevada, Reno to host free clinic in Silver Springs. 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Silver Springs Senior Center, 2945 Churchill St. The University of Nevada, Reno Student Outreach Clinic will be hosting a Rural Outreach Clinic in Silver Springs this Saturday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Carson City set to break ground on South Carson Complete Streets Project. 10 a.m. at the former armory site located at 2361 S. Carson St. The community is invited to celebrate the expansion of the Carson Street improvements at the South Carson Complete Streets Project groundbreaking ceremony. The event is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 29 and will feature construction equipment for children of all ages to explore and climb on. Speakers will include Mayor Bob Crowell and City Engineer Dan Stucky.

Carson City Parks, Rec and Open Space to host Geocache Adventure this Saturday. 10 a.m. Meet at Riverview Park located at the East end of 5th Street. Geocaching is a real-world treasure hunt with millions of caches hidden worldwide; in fact, there are hundreds of them hidden right here in Carson City. This Saturday, Feb. 29, join the Park Rangers on an interactive adventure searching for three caches hidden within Riverview Park.

Guided snowshoe hikes with a ranger on the Carson Ranger District. 10 a.m. at Tahoe Meadows, one mile southwest of the summit of Nevada State Route 431 Mt. Rose Highway. The Carson Ranger District on the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest is pleased to announce the return of the popular Forest Ranger-led snowshoe walks. The walks begin this Saturday, Jan. 25, and will be offered every Saturday through March 28.

Capital City Hoops to host no cost basketball clinic for second through eighth graders. Grades 2nd through 5th grade will be from 10 to 11 a.m. and grades 6th through 8th grade will be from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. The event will be held at Carson High School, 111 N. Saliman Rd. There is a limit of 100 campers per session. All boys and girls interested in basketball, are encouraged to join the fun and show us your skills.

Carson Cars and Coffee at The Human Bean. 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at 3300 U.S. Hwy 50 E. in Carson City. Come out and enjoy your local coffee shop and have a great time with cars and friends!

Historic Photograph Presentation. 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Carson Valley Museum and Cultural Center, 1477 U.S. Hwy 395 in Gardnerville. The Douglas County Historical Society has a number of historic photographs in their Roberta McConnell collection, but many of the people in the pictures go unrecognized. The museum needs the help of all old-time families, their friends, relatives and those with a good eye for history to stop by and help identify these lost legends.

Snowshoeing experience offered for young adults with cancer, multiple sclerosis. 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe in Reno. First Descents invites local young adults impacted by cancer or multiple sclerosis on a low-impact snowshoeing hike. The experience will empower participants to adventure outdoors beyond their diagnosis, reclaim their lives, connect with others doing the same and improve their long-term survivorship.

Postal Annex February Giveaway. Attention Carson City, we are excited to present our monthly Consumer Giveaway for February 2020. An Evening of Wine, Wisdom and Chili at Tunnel Creek Lodge in Incline Village will feature witty conversation over dinner with adventure stories only Mark Twain and Snowshoe Thompson could tell, on Saturday, Feb. 29.

Live Music at Kristopher's Ristorante and Bar. 7 p.m. at 1599 Esmeralda Ave. in Minden. Come and enjoy live music with plenty of tasty food and refreshments!

Sunday Brunch at West Side Pour House. 8 a.m. at 110 W. Telegraph St. in Carson City. You may have heard that we recently started a Sunday Brunch Buffet. Well, call us crazy but brunch begins at 8 a.m. this Sunday. The usual suspects are scrambled eggs, fried potatoes, bacon, sausage, biscuits & gravy. The gravy is gluten free and is all you can eat! If brunch isn’t your thing, no problem we will have you covered.

Muscle Powered Sunday Bicycle Ride. 9 a.m. Meet at Fremont Elementary School, 1511 Firebox Rd, Carson City. in the south parking lot, next to the Linear Ditch Trail. Come join Muscle Powered for a free, guided group walk, hike, or ride around Carson City. Muscle Powered is a local non-profit organization that promotes walking, hiking, biking and trail building.

Host of 'The Hemp Show' to speak in Carson City on benefits of medical hemp. 10:30 a.m. at Rustically Divine, 410 N. Carson St. Twenty years ago Joanne Rees-Ehlinger read "The Four Hour Work Week" and it inspired her to simplify her life. She is once again taking a page out of that book, having reduced her possessions to a few boxes and traveling the world in search of adventure. She hosts a weekly "The Hemp Show" online.

March Meditation Walk. 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Carson River Park, 5013 Carson River Rd. Join our Community Volunteer, Kelsey Kareck, for a morning of Meditation at Carson River Park. The walk will feature two 10 minute meditation sessions and a walk along the Mexican Ditch Trail discussing the concept of Inner Prosperity. Come prepared with water, close-toed shoes, and layers. Dogs are not allowed, minors under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Pasta From Scratch Cooking Class at Sierra Chef. 1 to 3 p.m. at 2292 Main Street Suites 3 and 4 in Genoa. We will be making fresh pasta with dough and all the right fixings on Sunday! It’s an event you don’t want to miss. $55 per person, please arrive on time for class.

Reverend Hylton at Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint. 1 to 4 p.m. at 1500 Old Hot Springs Rd. in Carson City. Reverend Hylton is an Americana Singer/Songwriter out of Atlanta but truly calling the road his home. He is currently touring the nation with his songs of relatable tales of life experiences. Heartbreak, addiction and traveling are the substance of his melodic musical, lyrical and vocal writings.

'Salute to Young Musicians' concert featured at Carson City Community Center. 3 p.m. at 851 E. William St. The concert will feature the choirs from Bordewich-Bray and Fritsch Elementary schools. The concert is free and open to all members of our community and surrounding areas.

French Wine Dinner at the Pink House in Genoa. 6 p.m. at 193 Genoa Ln. From live music to special dinners, and of course Valentine’s Day, we’ve got a winter packed full of events! Camp GOTR (Girls on the Run) is coming to Carson City for the second year in a row! Camp GOTR will be a week-long, half-day summer camp from 8 AM- 12 PM at the Carson City Community Center the week of August 5th- August 9th.

Girls on the Run Sierras is a character-building program for girls in 3rd through 8th grade operating in the Reno-Tahoe area.

Douglas County officials have announced that construction will begin soon on the first phase of the Muller Parkway Project. UPDATE THURSDAY: The Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the two people who died Wednesday morning following the two vehicle crash on I-580 in Carson City. They are Alejandra Hernandez Valtierra, 36, and Viola Santoyo Huizar, 48, both of Carson City.

UPDATE 12:42PM: Southbound I-580 in Carson City was opened as of around 11 a.m., said a Nevada State Police spokeswoman, who provided more details of the fatal crash that happened early Wednesday morning.

Both the driver of a car and a truck involved in the crash died. Their names have not been released pending notification of family members. The car, which was going the wrong way — northbound in the southbound lane — struck the truck and caught on fire, according to a NSP preliminary investigation thus far. The vehicle makes are unknown at this time.

Dayton Elementary School in Lyon County was honored Wednesday along 13 other schools including Carson High in Carson City as a Nevada Purple Star School.

Schools receiving the designation have committed to supporting the educational and social-emotional needs of military-connected children and their families.
