Start your Memorial weekend, work up a sweat and support your community! From 10-11am, Jordyn and Chelsea, founders of Spiral Fitness, will be leading an outdoor fitness class, No equipment needed. This event will highlight and support local business and community services in Carson City. After the event, there will be lots of free goodies and vendors.

We hope to support the local companies and hang out with you all for a few drinks after your workout! We will be located in Bob McFadden Plaza in the stage area, next to The Fox.

Students from all four classes recently nominated Carson High School Winterfest candidates for 2021 Winterfest week, Feb. 1-5, where both a King and Queen will be crowned. The theme, Destination Unknown, was decided upon; since students are not allowed to experience the vacations they love, they are bringing their vacation destinations to CHS.

The next Carson City School District board of trustees meeting will be held Tuesday, Jan. 26 beginning at 6 p.m. in the Robert “Bob” Crowell Board Room at the Carson City Community Center, located at 851 E. William Street.

Items to be discussed include policy changes, ACT test scores, teacher recognitions, and more.

The next Carson City Board of Supervisor’s meeting will take place Thursday, Jan. 21 beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Robert ‘Bob’ Crowell Board Room in the Carson City Community Center, located at 851 E. William Street.

Up for discussion includes improvements to the Carson City Rifle and Pistol Range, Grants for emergency housing, the proposed Little Lane Village subdivision and more.

According to Teen Health and Wellness, Rosen Publishing, “Sharing stories is a powerful way to connect with other people. The community is invited to a "Meet the Artist" gathering this Friday, Jan. 15 to celebrate the art work of Mauricio Sandoval, who has finished the first mural for Friends of Service Helping, also known as FISH, in Carson City.

The next Carson City School District School Board meeting will take place tonight, Tuesday Jan. 12 beginning at 7 p.m. at the Bob Boldrick Theater within the Carson City Community Center.

Soroptimist International of Carson City is pleased to announce our “Women Helping Women” Honorees to be recognized for their dedication to improving the lives of women or girls in our community, at our Virtual “Celebrating Women Helping Women” Recognition Event, via Zoom, on February 18, 2021 from 6:30 pm to 8 pm.

Carson City is now accepting letters of intent to apply for its Community Support Services Grant. Non-profit organizations and government agencies are qualified to fill out the Letter of Intent. As CHS teachers and students return to school, from, hopefully, a relaxing winter break, would it not be great to know one of their teachers recently published a short story? CHS Language Arts Department teacher Brigette Pugh is excited to share her latest published piece of writing.

It was an eventful year around the Carson City region notwithstanding the limitations caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Here's some notable stories that were not pandemic related that happened in 2020.

On Friday, December 18, 2020, the Carson City Democrats delivered $686 to Joyce Buckingham, coordinator at Ron Wood Family Center for the Carson City Toys for Tots program.

In recognition of the fact that many families in our community, especially those with children, are struggling in this holiday period, the Carson City Democrats conducted a blazingly fast appeal to its members to support a cash drive for the Toys For Tots program.

The Carson City Symphony Association presentation of “Joyful Noise — A Holiday Treat” concert is available for viewing on the Carson City Symphony channel on YouTube here and from Facebook.com/CarsonCitySymphony here. The concert features John and Cherie Shipley with their Joyful Noise Chorus and Band. They have been performing "Joyful Noise" concerts each December since 2002.

This year has been extremely challenging and with the impact of Covid; many of our families are struggling to ensure they can celebrate Christmas. However, generous community members have come together determined to help these families have a Christmas celebration not even Covid can stop.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region. Several fundraisers, including the annual “Share Your Christmas” Food Drive will be available throughout the Carson City, Minden and Reno areas on Friday. You can visit the North Pole safely as part of a drive-thru Santa's Village experience at V&T Railway in Carson City, beginning Friday into the weekend. A living nativity scene will be featured at First United Methodist Church on Saturday and Sunday. Combined with train rides in Virginia City, the state capital will be buzzing with excitement. Carson City Elks Lodge No. 2177 held a raffle drawing recently for a wooden American Flag. Proceeds from the raffle benefitted Holiday With a Hero, which is a local program that buys gifts for children and delivered by our first responders.

On the agenda for discussion includes an increase in water rates, the replacement of 32 city vehicles, water purchases and more.

The Salvation Army wants to extend a huge thank you to the community of Carson City. Last Friday, Nov. 20, the nonprofit held its 23rd Annual Turkey Drop. With a year that has seen such a dramatic increase in assistance requests, the amount of turkeys and financial donations The Salvation Army received greatly exceeded what the agency hoped to receive.

Anyone who bought tickets ahead of time can get reimbursed or have the money donated to the Carson City Symphony Assoc. The next Carson City School Board Meeting will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 24 in the Bob Boldrick Theater at the Carson City Community Center, located at 851 E. William Street beginning at 7 p.m.

During the Thursday meeting of the Carson City Board of Supervisors, a $125,000 settlement demand was approved by the Board in regards to the alleged molestation of a five-year-old child who was, at the time, enrolled at Camp Carson.

The Carson City Board of Supervisors will hold a special meeting on Monday, Nov. 16 beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Bob Boldrick Theater of the Carson City Community Center to certify election results.

The Carson City Host Lions Club is pleased to announce the winning entries in the Nevada Day Chalk Art Contest held on Oct. 31. The contest was open to all Carson City residents, households and businesses. Contestants created chalk art masterpieces on their own driveways or sidewalks based on the Nevada Day theme of “My Favorite Moment in Nevada.”

English Language Learners At-Home Program founder Florence Phillips received Nevada's highest volunteer honors with a lifetime recognition award for the all-volunteer, nonprofit Carson City-based program she established.

By 11 a.m. on Election Day, nearly 700 Carson City residents have already come to cast their votes at the Carson City Community Center, which is the only polling location for the capital city this year.

Today is Election Day. In person voting can be done at the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William Street, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. The Carson City Courthouse is not a polling location for the general election.

UPDATE MONDAY: The Carson City Board of Supervisors will hold a special meeting this Thursday, 1 p.m. to discuss and take possible action regarding the appointment of a person to fill an anticipated vacancy in the office of Ward 3 Supervisor on the Board of Supervisors for a term that begins Jan. 4, 2021 and ends Jan. 1, 2023.
