Those of us who love Lake Tahoe know she has restorative powers, but a new documentary series created by Visit Lake Tahoe, Noble Studios, and Outside Magazine set out to prove it. Beyond Awestruck: The Scientific Search for Connection takes a look at “the awe-inspiring effects of Lake Tahoe … on people’s well-being, social connection and concern for nature.”
Join Grassroots Yoga and Fitness Center for a conversation about turning off the tech, getting out into nature and connecting with each other at this family friendly event. The free community film screening and discussion is happening this Sunday, June 14 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Grassroots Yoga and Fitness Center, 195 E. Winnie Lane in Carson City. Please register in advance by going here so we can have seating prepared.

This research shows up at a pivotal time. We are living in a tech-centric timeline and the physical, mental and spiritual consequences are beginning to pile up. Those of us working in the fields of wellness and education have had a front row seat to the dysregulation that is a result of disconnection from the self, nature and community.
Emilee Riggin and Brigette Pugh, owners of Grassroots Yoga & Fitness Center, have worked in education for a combined 30 years and have had a front row seat to the damaging effects of social disconnection. Finding solutions to those challenges is one of the reasons they partnered up to run Grassroots – a yoga studio, fitness center and collaborative wellness hub.
When Steve and Wanda La Russa, owners of Awake ‘N’ Flow, who are both featured in the documentary, reached out to collaborate on sharing this research with the community, it was in obvious alignment with their mission: “to meet people where they are and offer tools for living well, both on and off the mat.”
The documentary is presented in three 20 minute episodes filmed in and around Tahoe. Each episode will be followed by small group discussions and we will conclude with a whole-group conversation about how we can all be part of creating connected communities. This is a family friendly event (there will be popcorn!)
