Carson High School’s Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) Raider Team earned fifth place overall in the All-Service Mixed Division at the 2026 U.S. Army Cadet Command National Raider Challenge, held last month at Fort Knox, Ky.

The team competed against 51 other teams in the co-ed division as part of a national competition that brought together 340 teams from across the globe.

Carson High School also earned third place in the division’s 5-kilometer team run.

Cadet Lieutenant Makala Heyder, Raider Team and Alpha Company Commander, accepts trophy.

The annual National Raider Challenge tests cadets’ physical fitness, teamwork, problem-solving and leadership through five demanding events designed to challenge participants mentally and physically.

The five events included:

  • 5K Team Run: A team cross-country run over varied terrain.
  • Cross Country Rescue: A simulated casualty rescue requiring teams to transport a person through challenging terrain and obstacles.
  • Physical Strength Test: A series of physical and mental challenges testing strength, endurance and determination.
  • One Rope Bridge: Teams construct a bridge using only a rope and carabiners to cross an obstacle.
  • The Gauntlet: An overland course featuring obstacles such as 12-foot walls, culverts, steep terrain and over-and-under challenges.

The competition provides cadets with an opportunity to demonstrate the discipline, resilience and teamwork developed through NJROTC while competing against some of the nation’s top JROTC programs.

The achievement reflects the Raider Team’s dedication, hard work and commitment, along with the leadership and training provided by the school’s naval instructor.

Competing against some of the nation’s top teams, the students represented Carson High School and the community with distinction.
