CARSON CITY — Several bills that were introduced in the just-ended session of the Nevada Legislature didn’t get a chance to see the light of day in 2013. Here’s a look back on a few pieces of legislation that died this year:
Ward-only voting Republican Gov. Brian Sandoval vetoed legislation Tuesday that would have changed Reno’s and Sparks’ current voting system from citywide voting to ward-only voting, which would require voters to select the city council candidate who would represent the ward they live in.

King of the West Sprint Cars to race at Reno-Tahoe-Fernley Speedway

May 17, 2013 - 7:00pm Reno-Tahoe-Fernley Speedway hosts the King of the West Sprint Car series this weekend. The two-night show marks the return of sprint cars to the track after a seven-year absence. It is also the debut of this prestigious west coast racing series at the newly-reconfigured 3/8 mile oval at Reno-Tahoe-Fernley Speedway. These winged beasts are powered by 410 cubic inch, 900 horsepower engines that will propel them to breathtaking speeds on the track's high-banks.

Carson City Symphony's Strings in the Schools led by Carson City Symphony Education Director Sue Jesch present a festival featuring the Music of Jay Ungar and Molly Mason on Saturday, May 11.
The concert will be at Empire Elementary School, 1260 Monte Rosa Drive, Carson City. It includes a workshop from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. for string players of all ages, a potluck lunch, and a public concert beginning at 3:00 p.m. Admission to the festival and the concert is free, donations welcome.

On Thursday, April 25, Café at Adele’s will donate 20 percent of every dining ticket total to Northern Nevada Hopes so the non-profit organization can continue its work of raising awareness about and providing STD, HIV and Hepatitis C testing, as well as providing extensive support and medical care for those living with HIV in northern Nevada.

The program also features Wagner's Overture to "Rienzi" and Schubert's "Unfinished" Symphony. All three compositions are associated with keys having two sharps, D major and B minor.

More than 3.5 feet of new snow at Lake Tahoe ski resorts

“You just never know how these storms are going to play out,” said Chief Marketing Officer Andy Chapman of the North Lake Tahoe Chamber/CVB/Resort Association. “But Mother Nature cooperated and we’ve got new snow on the mountains.”

Three-hour Nevada Parade kicks off at 10 a.m. along Carson Street route

The three-hour four mile-long parade features hundreds of colorful floats, high-stepping equestrian units, and spirited marching bands from throughout the state. The traditional 10 a.m. flyover of military aircraft from the Fallon Naval Air Station and Nevada Air Guard will kick-off the parade.

The Carson Chamber Singers, a choral group of the Carson City Symphony Association, begins its 28th season with concerts in Carson City on November 2 and in Reno on November 4. Director Michael Langham will conduct the Singers in works by René Clausen, Randall Thompson, Maurice Duruflé, and Louis Vierne. The Solemn Mass by Vierne, for chorus and organ, will be accompanied by Nancy Mielke.
The Carson City concert will be Friday, Nov. 2, 7:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 306 W. Musser St. Admission is free, requested donation $10 at the door.

September 28, 2012 (All day) Reggae fans are in for a rare treat. European Roots Reggae artist Martin Zobel and his band Soulrise will perform at Carson City’s Club Envy on Friday September 28th. Born and raised in Germany, Zobel is a popular and integral part of the European Reggae scene. His latest album, Land of the Free, is the result of a month long collaboration with Reggae legend Fully Fullwood. The album went straight to the top of the German Reggae charts. It was just released in the United States and now Zobel and his band Soulrise are embarking on their first US tour.

This is an increase over last year’s net earnings of $37,000 and like last year, one hundred percent of these proceeds go towards local cancer patients seeking treatment in Carson City. Currently, the CTH Foundation is the only non-profit organization focused on supporting Carson area cancer patients with living expenses.

September 28, 2012 (All day) September is Library Card Sign-up Month, a time when libraries across the country remind parents that a library card is the most important school supply of all; a key tool in achieving academic success! A number of libraries are celebrating Library Card Sign-up Month with various promotions and events.
The primary event at the Carson City Library will be a “Concert on the Grass at Your Library” Friday, September 28th from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. in front of the library. Live music will be provided by “Deep Groove” a trio whose members are Mark Ashworth on drums and vocals, Dan Lancaster on sax, clarinet and flute, and John Shipley on keyboard and vocals.
US Air Force Travis Brass to present free Carson City concert Sept. 16

September 16, 2012 - 4:00pm Travis Brass, the resident brass quintet of the US Air Force Band of the Golden West from Travis AFB, Calif., will present a free concert on Sunday, Sept. 16th at 4 pm at the Carson City Community Center. Travis Brass consists of five full-time active duty professional musicians working in support of Air Mobility Command and the US Air Force. From a standard march or traditional brass composition to jazz, ragtime and patriotic selections, Travis Brass’ diverse repertoire covers a myriad of styles with something to please everyone.
HopeFest tonight to benefit Carson City area cancer patients

HopeFest, an annual benefit concert that will feature the music of Mo5aic and The Cutters, is one of the Carson City's biggest fundraising events with 100 percent of the money raised going directly to supports local cancer patients in need.
