New leadership roles for Carson City School Board, re-elected sworn in

The Carson City School District is pleased to announce new leadership roles for the School Board of Trustees. At their first meeting of the year Tuesday, Jan. 11, Joe Cacioppo, District 7, was named the newest president of the Carson City School District Board of Trustees.

Two Carson City teachers earn National Board Certification

The Carson City School District is celebrating two new National Board Certified Teachers from the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards. The teachers to be recognized earning certification are Patricia Ababio, Graphic Arts teacher in the Career and Technical Education program at Carson High School, and Rhonda Holloway, English teacher at Carson Middle School.

It’s a ‘Food of Love’ Story at Pioneer High School in Carson City

Mahatma Gandhi said, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” Putting gratitude into action by helping others is an authentic way to express an attitude of thanksgiving. Students at Pioneer High School (PHS) “lost themselves” in service by assembling Thanksgiving dinner baskets for those in need.

Nine Carson City area student winners announced for American Citizen Essay Contest

The Carson City School District’s Board of Trustees is pleased to announce nine student winners of the 19th Annual American Citizen Essay Contest. Each winner will be recognized at the school board meeting Tuesday, Nov. 24, and will received the following cash prizes: First Place: $80, Second Place: $30 and Third Place: $15. Grade level winners include the following.

Airplane that made emergency landing near Carson City school gets towed at Saliman Road

A small airplane that made an emergency landing in a field Wednesday afternoon near Fremont Elementary School in Carson City was moved for tow to nearby Saliman Road, across from the school.

Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies we're called Wednesday afternoon to an emergency aircraft landing that happened in a field near Fremont Elementary School.

New school zone hours extended in Carson City area

Updates and changes to school zones have arrived in the Carson City area.

School zones for Bordewich Bray, Carson Middle, Carson High, Eagle Valley, Empire, Fremont, Fritsch, Mark Twain, Pioneer High and Seeliger have been extended from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. The installation of new signs and updated times is expected to be completed by the second week of October, 2020.

Carson City's Flatbed Concert Series brings the Lonesome Polecat Band to Fremont Elementary neighborhood

The Brewery Arts Center will deliver live music directly to the citizens of Carson City while practicing social distancing once again this week.

Miles Construction Company has generously donated the use of a Flatbed Truck and with financial support from The Change Companies, the Nauman Foundation, and Carson Tahoe Hospital, all summer the BAC has placed musicians and bands on the flatbed and driven them through the streets and neighborhoods of Carson City and now the fun goes into September.

Poker run, lacrosse, duck fundraiser and more highlight weekend activities around Carson City area

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region. The American Cancer Society is hosting a poker run Saturday at Mills Park, and a free lacrosse clinic for kids ages 6-12 will be held at John L. Harvey Field. The Nevada Humane Society is virtually hosting its annual “Adopt a Duck” fundraiser for interested participants. UPDATE: Firefighters have been able to get a handle on the brush fire. The cause is under investigation.

Although most retail businesses in the state were allowed to open May 9 to in-person service with extra precautions as part of the state’s “Phase 1” reopening, casino resorts were noticeably excluded.

Breaking: Car chase occurring now between Carson City and Douglas County

A car chase involving a stolen vehicle began just before 12 p.m. Friday afternoon on Carson Street.

The driver of the stolen vehicle led deputies on a pursuit going up to speeds of 80 mph heading south on Carson Street into Douglas County.

Spooner Junction was closed at 11:50.

At 11:54 deputies reported a hand was waving outside of the sunroof, appearing to show something deputies could not identify.

At 11:55 the chase was approaching Mica Drive.

At 11:57 the chase passed Stephanie Lane.

At 11:58 the vehicle turned East on Johnson Lane.

Carson City Schools provides registration information for 5th-graders promoting to 6th grade

The Carson City School District would like to remind parents and families with fifth-graders, that registration information for sixth grade at Eagle Valley will be included in the educational packets their students will receive from their individual elementary schools Tuesday, April 21.

The competitive process garners dozens of applications from district educators each semester. Local dignitaries visit Carson City elementary classrooms, guest-read for reading week

Each year, National Read Across America Day is observed on March 2, the birthday of children’s book author Ted Geisel, also known as Dr. Seuss. In celebration, many schools often dedicate an entire week as “Reading Week.” In Carson City, grade-schoolers at Fremont Elementary School got to celebrate a week prior to the observance with several community partners and local dignitaries, who visited classrooms to read to students.
