Submitted by Don Quilici on Thu, 04/11/2013 - 9:31amElaine and I spent March 28-April 07 on a fun-filled, springtime return to Southern California for several reasons:
1. To celebrate our 11th Wedding Anniversary (March 30).
2. To visit my cousin Lorraine Scholes and her husband Bob, who have a winter home in Indio.
3. To attend our first-ever "Palm Springs Follies" show in Palm Springs.

Cultures Clash at Capitol Over Bear Hunting
Submitted by Nevada Media Alliance on Sat, 03/09/2013 - 10:30amby SCOT JENKINS
Bear hunting was illegal in Nevada for 82 years until, in 2011, Governor Sandoval chose not to interfere with the Nevada Wildlife Commission’s hunting regulation.
On Mar. 7, Senator Aaron Ford patiently listened to a battle of clashing cultures when Nevadans voiced their concerns over a bill that would classify the black bear as a protected mammal, effectively prohibiting the Board of Wildlife Commissioners from authorizing the hunting of black bears.

Outdoors with Don Q: What you need to know about ice fishing
Submitted by Don Quilici on Thu, 01/31/2013 - 6:48amWith the bitter January cold weather in the Sierra behind us, we do have plenty of water frozen on our creeks, streams, rivers, ponds, lakes and reservoirs. And that ice covering provides an excellent opportunity to catch fish.
Ice fishing is a unique sport that requires a whole different set of fishing techniques, gear and clothing, as opposed to lazy fishing on a warm, drowsy day in the middle of the summer. So, if you’ve never tried fishing through the ice, here’s some information that should be more than enough to get you “hooked” on this winter sport:

Submitted by Don Quilici on Thu, 01/24/2013 - 3:42pmFour, fun-loving people from this area spent last Friday, Saturday and Sunday on an Amtrak train trip to and from Sacramento, Calif. Those four individuals were Bob “Slick” and Lynda McCulloch, plus Elaine and I, all of Carson City.
The purpose of this trip was to take a leisurely train ride on Friday over Donner Summit, so we could see and photograph the deep winter snow along the way in the high country, and then have two days of fun in Sacto.
It was a fun-filled three days, and here are some highlights of our adventure:

Most importantly, remember that if you do make any resolutions, be sure to follow through with what you resolve to do in this new year.
Resolutions are easy to make, but sometimes hard to accomplish.
I have a number of things I would like to accomplish this year, so without any further ado, here are my 2013 resolutions:

Snowshoeing Your Local Trails
Submitted by BikeCarson.com on Thu, 01/03/2013 - 12:27pmIt’s turning out to be one of those winters that isn’t very mountain bike friendly. Freezing temperatures are keeping the roads icy in town, and there is bicycle-stopping deep snow in the nearby mountains. Thankfully there is another way to enjoy our local trails if you’re willing to let go of the handlebars and grab some poles.
Outdoors with Don Q: Merry Christmas to everyone
Submitted by Don Quilici on Sun, 12/23/2012 - 10:31amIn what has become a family tradition of many years, the entire Quilici family is planning to spend part of the Christmas holiday at their cabin, which is located at an elevation of 6,000 feet on a steep mountainside between the City of Portola and Davis Lake in Northern California.
What makes this location so special at this time of the year is that Plumas County does not plow the gravel road to the cabin when it snows.
When the countryside is covered with a layer of deep snow, we have to hike in on our snowshoes while towing a sled full of “goodies.”
