If any of these scenarios describes you, you may be setting yourself up for skin cancer.

The Carson City Board of Supervisors are holding a special meeting today to discuss the city's Redevelopment Authority. The meeting, which began at 8:30 a.m. is at the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William Street in the Sierra Room. Go here for the agenda and here to watch it live.

Rare coins by the thousands remain on display, for sale or trade today through 4 p.m. at the Carson Nugget at the annual Downtown Coin Club Show. This all-ages coin event brought more than 300 collectors and numismatics to the Nugget on Saturday.

Here is the Carson City road construction and maintenance report for the week of May 20-26. Utility work for various projects will occur on several local roads. There will be flagger controlled traffic with minor delays possible at the following locations:

— Fairview Drive from Highway 50 to Edmonds Drive.
— Edmonds Drive from Fairview Drive to Snyder Avenue.
— Carson Street from Washington Street to Hot Springs Road.
— Hot Springs Road from Carson Street to Roop Street.
— Retail Drive from College Parkway to the south end.

The situation looked discouraging for the Western Nevada College Wildcats in the second inning of their Western District baseball tournament opener in Sterling, Colo., Thursday afternoon.

Lamar Community College was in command, 5-0, after knocking starting pitcher Brandon Show out of the game. WNC had committed two errors and the Lopes’ ace, Sam Wilson, was throwing the Wildcat hitters off stride.

A pilot and two others escaped injury Wednesday after a plane crash northeast of Spooner in the Kings Canyon area, Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong confirmed.

A Carson City man was taken by CareFlight to Renown Medical Center in Reno after the truck he was driving hit a power pole Saturday afternoon at the corner of Musser and Minnesota streets.

The condition of the man is unknown at this time. No other injuries were reported. The accident happened shortly before 4 p.m. The driver was conscious at the time he was taken by ambulance to the former Carson Tahoe Hospital site a few blocks from the accident scene where he was picked up by air ambulance.

The cause of the accident is unknown at this time.

Mother’s Day is this Sunday and in honor of mother’s, daughters, sisters, aunts, and all women, it is interesting to note how far women have come in just a few short decades when it comes to home ownership.

In 1968, the federal Fair Housing Act was passed making it illegal to discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion or national origin when renting or selling a home. In 1974, the Fair Housing Act was amended to prohibit housing discrimination on the basis of sex. Prior to that time, women (as well as minorities) found it nearly impossible to obtain credit or to buy a home.

They did it. Western Nevada College’s softball team earned the program’s first postseason victory with a 2-0 win against Colorado Northwestern in the Region 18 tournament on Thursday morning in Twin Falls, Idaho.

Sophomore pitcher Ali Lostra blanked the Spartans on five hits and struck out the final two hitters with the potential tying runs on base to secure the history-making victory.

“It was really exciting,” said WNC coach Leah Wentworth. “Along with the first postseason win, another first was that I don’t think we shut out anybody this year.”

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Rural Housing Authority staff, along with its Board of Commissioners, are mourning the death of Commission member, Tom Cook. Cook died at Carson Tahoe Hospital, while surrounded by loving family, on April 25, 2013.

Here is the Carson City road maintenance and construction report through May 12: The outside westbound lane of William Street will be closed Sunday from Carson Street to Plaza Street due to construction activity on the building adjacent to the roadway.

The northbound lane on Fairview Drive will be closed between Fifth Street and Edmonds Drive due to roadway maintenance. Detours will be marked.

There will be road work on Long Street between Roop Street and Molly Drive. No delays are expected.

Library staff member Una Gauper recently visited the island country in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. Her journey spanned months of travel and adventure. Her large network of extended family provided expert travel guidance as she experienced the culture and explored the landscape.

Lionel Bart's exuberant musical Oliver! takes the stage in Carson City on weekends, May 10-19. The Western Nevada Musical Theatre Company’s production of “Oliver! plays in seven performances at the Carson City Community Center.



A Tony Award-winning classic, Oliver! is the musical retelling of Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist. The story tells of a child who is sold by a London orphanage because he asked for more food. Oliver eventually escapes to the streets of London, finding adventure and a loving home.

Carson City Symphony's Strings in the Schools led by Carson City Symphony Education Director Sue Jesch present a festival featuring the Music of Jay Ungar and Molly Mason on Saturday, May 11.

The concert will be at Empire Elementary School, 1260 Monte Rosa Drive, Carson City. It includes a workshop from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. for string players of all ages, a potluck lunch, and a public concert beginning at 3:00 p.m. Admission to the festival and the concert is free, donations welcome.

A day after NBA basketball player Jason Collins came out as gay to Sports Illustrated, a former NFL coach and an Oakland Raider record-setting placekicker believe the NFL is ready to accept a gay football player.

"I don't think the NFL is going to have a problem," said Herm Edwards, former Kansas City Chiefs head coach, now an NFL analyst for ESPN. "Is there going to be a vote of confidence in the locker room? For some of the younger and immature players, but the veteran players — they get it."

Women to Women Nevada with Carol Paz welcomes this week's guest, Katherine Lima, a member of the Advisory Board at Carson Valley Medical Center and member of Crystal Angels, a local organization that began in 1997 that helps families and children in need. The Washoe Valley teenage girl involved in the single-vehicle rollover crash Tuesday afternoon in Pleasant Valley has died from her injuries at Renown Regional Medical Center, the Nevada Highway Patrol reports.
