Livermore legislation signed by Gov. Sandoval to preserve Nevada State Prison for tourism

Assemblyman Pete Livermore, Carson City Mayor Robert Crowell and members of the Nevada State Prison Preservation Society assembled late Tuesday afternoon to witness Gov. Brian Sandoval sign off on the recommendation to study the feasibility of turning the historic prison into a visitor's museum/attraction.

Cactus Air Force received approval from the Carson City Airport Authority to build a military aircraft and vehicle museum at the Carson City Airport.

Cactus Air Force’s “Wings and Wheels Museum” will be a nonprofit, public museum dedicated to celebrating aviation and military history through preserving, restoring, displaying and use of US military aircraft and vehicles from WWII to present.

A 60-second radio spot sung by the Sierra Nevada Children's Choir will be used as part of the Virginia & Truckee Railroad 2013 advertising campaign.

Carson City Historic Preservation Scavenger Hunt now underway

In celebration of Historic Preservation Month, the Carson City Historic Resources Commission has launched its fourth annual Historic Preservation Scavenger Hunt beginning today through May 28.

The adult scavenger hunt will consist of 30 historic architectural features, all within in the historic district, and the kids scavenger hunt will consist of 20 historic features within a smaller area.

Completed entries must be submitted by 4 p.m. on May 28 to the Planning Division at 108 E Proctor Street. Entries with all correct answers will be entered into a drawing to be held on May 30.

V&T Railroad season kicks off with Mother's Day train

The popular exhibit “Slot Machines: The Fey Collection” at the Nevada State Museum in Carson City will close May 1 to make way for the upcoming Nevada Sesquicentennial exhibit : Finding Fremont: Pathfinder of the West, opening in October. While the slots are off exhibit for two years, staff will conserve the collection and plan for a traveling exhibit that could go on tour.

The winners of the Carson Memories photo contest were announced this week in a ceremony held at the Carson Nugget.

The Carson Memories contest asked participants to submit their favorite photos demonstrating something special or distinct about the Carson City area.

The winning photos, along with the other select photos, are being incorporated into an exhibit created by Gardnerville artist, Beverly Caputo. The exhibit is featured next to a recently finished mural painted by Caputo. The mural depicts key people, places and things of historical relevance to Carson City.

Nevada Expressions II Comes to Carson City: Art Show and Sale to Benefit Historic Preservation on the Comstock

Reid announces more than $5 million for Virginia City, Gold Hill wastewater upgrades

Nevada Senator Harry Reid today on Earth Day announced that USDA Rural Development has approved a loan of $3,002,000 and a grant of $2,312,794 to replace the wastewater treatment plant that serves the Virginia City and Gold Hill communities in Storey County. The existing plant is past its useful life.

The Carson City Board of Supervisors is seeking applications from persons interested in serving on the Carson City Convention and Visitors Bureau Board and the Historic Resources Commission.

There is an open seat on each board. With the CCCVB, the term will run through July 2015. On the Historic Commission, the term is for four years, expiring July 2017 and is for a person professionally qualified in building construction.

Putting Main Street on a Road Diet

On March 14th I attended a workshop presented by the Carson City Public Works Department. The presentation outlined a proposal to create a pedestrian-friendly environment on Carson Street through the downtown area of Carson City between Fifth Street and Ann Street. This Road Diet, as they are commonly called, would include using striping to reduce travel lanes from four to two, and add on-street parallel parking.

After concessions and collaboration, Lake Tahoe Regional Plan approved

For the first time since 1987, Lake Tahoe has a new regional plan for development and land use.
Twelve of the 14 voting members of the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency's governing board voted in favor of the new plan, with one member voting against it and another abstaining, according to TRPA spokesman Jeff Cowan.

Business interests say the plan is an overdue overhaul of regulations that will jump-start Tahoe's tourism economy while also protecting its environment.

Carson City School District picked for federal 'Race to the Top' grant

The Carson City School District was among 16 winners of federal grant money from the The U.S. Department of Education's 2012 Race to the Top-District competition.

The Carson City School District will receive a share of the $400 million grant, around and up to $10 million, to support locally developed plans to personalize and deepen student learning, directly improve student achievement and educator effectiveness, close achievement gaps, and prepare every student to succeed in college and their careers.

"This is wonderful news for Carson City's students, teachers and parents" said Nevada Sen. Harry Reid. "As someone whose life was transformed by teachers, I understand the importance of providing all Nevadans with the opportunity to receive a quality education. While I wish that other school districts in the state were also awarded this grant, I know these funds will help put Carson's students on a path towards success."

Polar Express tickets aboard Carson City V&T have sold out; two options available for train enthusiasts

The 2012 Polar Express train aboard the historic V&T Railway in Carson City has sold all of its tickets, officials said. The all-ages train ride is set for 15 different dates, Nov. 23 through Dec. 23. The V&T officially sold all 10,794 of its tickets as of Thursday, said Candy Duncan, executive director of the Carson City Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Three-hour Nevada Parade kicks off at 10 a.m. along Carson Street route

Sunny skies and crisp fall temperatures are in motion for the 74th annual Nevada Day Parade, which begins at 10 a.m. down Carson Street in Carson City. The three-hour four mile-long parade features hundreds of colorful floats, high-stepping equestrian units, and spirited marching bands from throughout the state. The traditional 10 a.m. flyover of military aircraft from the Fallon Naval Air Station and Nevada Air Guard will kick-off the parade.

Two more chipmunks test positive for plague in South Lake Tahoe area

The El Dorado County Department of Environmental Health was notified this week by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) that two additional chipmunks in the South Lake Tahoe area have tested positive for plague. One of the chipmunks was found in the Tallac Historic Site area and one was near the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) Taylor Creek Visitor Center.
