After more than 22 years, two brothers and two sisters now get to talk and see their eldest sister after traveling thousands of miles across the country from New York to Carson City.
Carson City Sheriff’s Office currently has 2 Mobile Outreach Safety Teams (MOST) consisting of a licensed clinical social worker and a deputy with training to meet the standards of behavioral peace officer. The Carson City Sheriff’s Office is currently in the process of expanding MOST with a third team. MOST is a part of the patrol division and takes referrals from deputies, community partners, other agencies, and members of the community for anyone that could be experiencing a behavioral health crisis in Carson City.
MOST received an email from a family member at the end of May. The family member was reaching out in regards to a possible location of their loved one as the received a bill from the Carson City Fire Department. The family member believed their loved one could possibly be in the Carson City area. Within 12 days of the initial email MOST was able to locate their family member who had been out of contact with them for over 22 years. The loved one describes herself as a nomad and has been unhoused while traveling around the country starting around 2004.
MOST maintained contact with the family members for the next week while the brothers and sisters planned their travels to come reunite with their eldest sister. After a long day of travel from New York to Reno/Carson City the family stayed in a local hotel with the hopes of seeing their sister the next day.
MOST and the family drove around Carson City checking her most frequented areas. Within one hour MOST located her.
The amount of joy, relief, and overwhelming emotions ensued for an extended amount of time. The brothers and sisters called and facetimed loved ones across the country and she even met new family members she has never met before.
The brothers and sisters are currently working with the loved one getting medical needs met so she can travel back to be with her family.
The brothers and sisters said after all these years they had never stopped looking for their eldest sister and never gave up faith. The brothers and sisters stopped everything and immediately did everything they could to all make the trip happen.
The amount of love and relief that was seen from the outside looking in has no words. Multiple members of the sheriff’s office that were involved stated this moment has been the highlight of their careers.
