Group files petition to put Nugget Project to a vote of the people
Submitted by admin on Thu, 02/02/2012 - 10:57amA group of local activists have filed a petition the the county clerk to stop Carson City from using public money on the City Center Project (aka Nugget Project) without getting approval from the voters.
Attorney Day Williams, a long-time opponent of the project, said the group started talking about it last week before filing the paperwork on Friday.
“We filed the petition because the city continues to move forward with this boondoggle,” Williams said.
The petition asks for the adoption of a city ordinance that reads:

Submitted by admin on Mon, 01/23/2012 - 1:39pmA recent report commissioned by the U.S. Conference of Mayors awards Carson City the dubious distinction of being the only metropolitan area studied that is predicted to not recover any jobs this year.
Add to that this morning's unemployment report showing the rate for Carson City climbed to 12.2 percent in December, and one can't help worrying about the economic outlook for our area.

Carson City IHOP reopens for business
Submitted by admin on Thu, 12/15/2011 - 7:25amThree months after the deadly shooting rampage that left four diners dead, the Carson City IHOP is once again serving up breakfast this morning.
One of the first diners at the reopened restaurant is Sheriff Kenny Furlong, who is currently enjoying his morning meal in a place that holds some bad memories for him and his deputies who responded to the the shooting on Sept. 6. Four people who were sitting inside the restaurant died after being shot by Eduardo Sencion, who killed himself minutes later in the parking lot.
Gov. Brian Sandoval, Mayor Bob Crowell and Supervisor John McKenna were also among the first diners at the restaurant this morning.
Deputy city manager proposal to be pulled from Carson City Supervisors' agenda

Mayor Bob Crowell said he that after discussions he has had over the past few days since the proposal became public, he will ask that the item be pulled from the agenda.

Downtown Carson City lights up for Christmas

Streets were closed off as throngs of people gathered in front of the state capitol to watch as the lights for the two giant Christmas trees were turned on.
Santa and Mrs. Claus arrived on the back of an antique fire truck, with Mayor Bob Crowell riding shotgun. After the state's trees were turned on, the crowd headed over to the First Presbyterian Church where the city's Christmas tree was turned on.

Austin Pacheco turned the game in Carson's favor after intercepting a pass from Miners quarterback T.J. Menning and returned it 72 yards for a touchdown. Dylan Sawyers rang up 144 yards rushing for the Senators.

Carson City leaders give update on State of the City

Mayor Bob Crowell, Supervisor Shelly Aldean, Sheriff Kenny Furlong and School Board Chair Joanna Wilson each spoke to the crowd, and in general agreed that while these are challenging times, each made the case that things are going well and improving.

As many of you know, May is National Bike Month. Here in Carson City, several events and rides were held, capped by Bike To Work Week from May 16-20 and the celebration on the 20th outside the Firkin & Fox. As reported, about 150 people came by to visit, enjoy others’ bikes, and get a chance to win a raffle prize. The Nevada Legislature passed two bills in its current session that benefit cyclists (see sidebar below).
Arbor Day 2011 in Carson City

Among those attending will be Smokey Bear who will help the Council plant the Northern Red Maple selected by the staff of Carson City’s Park and Recreation Department. The tree planting is scheduled at 6 p.m. The Council paid for the tree with money it raised at annual Fall Tree Care Seminar.
Another shot fired in public-private golf battle
Submitted by Kirk Caraway on Wed, 03/23/2011 - 7:50pmLast month, the Carson City Board of Supervisors heard complaints from the owners of two private golf courses about the city subsidizing the operator of the city-owned Eagle Valley Golf courses by forgiving its $200,000 lease payment.
One issue brought up at the time was that the city needs the Eagle Valley courses to help dispose of effluent water from its sewage treatment plant. If Eagle Valley was not operating, then the city would be forced to spend more money to build more storage for the water.

Carson City Board of Supervisors vote to move Nugget Project forward

But the project may face hurdles getting final approval, as two of those voting yes expressed concerns about the project.
Carson City Supervisors quickly vote down property tax hike

The finance director spoke up to suggest a small adjustment for one area. Supervisor Karen Abowd made a different motion to keep taxes the same except for this small adjustment. That motion passed unanimously.
Prime Carson River Canyon Frontage Permanently Protected

A partnership for the purchase, appraised at $3.1 million, was created between Carson City, the Nevada Land Conservancy, the Commission for the Reconstruction of the V&T Railway and private landowner John Serpa.

Carson City looking to change redevelopment tax incentives

This has led the city to consider increasing the incentives to other businesses to match those given to Southgate.

Submitted by admin on Fri, 10/22/2010 - 9:49pmThe Secretary of the Interior announced the approval of $90 million in funding for continued restoration at Lake Tahoe along with other park and trail projects in Nevada as part of the Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act.
The funding includes money for the purchase by the Forest Service of the 13 acre Schulz property near the Kings Canyon Waterfall as well as funding up to 40 percent of the $1.6 million for the acquisition of the Bently, Carson River Canyon property. The balance of the funding and future management will be through the City’s Open Space Program.
Olive Garden coming to south Carson City

Olive Garden has agreed to a land lease, conditioned upon the developer of the shopping center filling the other empty stores. On that point, the new Big Lots store will open next month, and Big 5 Sports will be moving into the other space from their current, smaller location on North Carson Street.

Get the shot: Carson City offers free flu vaccinations on Oct. 16

It is the seventh year for the program, and by all measures it keeps on growing and has been tremendously successful, health officials said at a press conference this morning.
Last year, there were 8,000 seasonal flu shots given and 21,000 H1N1 shots administered, health officials said.

Carson City audience wowed by U.S. Air Force Band of the Golden West concert
Submitted by editor on Thu, 06/10/2010 - 2:52pmIt was a glorious time in the spirit of Old Glory. Carson City Mayor Robert Crowell welcomed the United States Air Force Band of the Golden West to Carson City Wednesday night.
The performance held at the Bob Boldrick Community Center was a solid smash and delighted the mostly senior audience, many of whom served in the military. The last time the full band was in Carson City was in the fall of 2006.

More Nugget Project nuggets uncovered

Following the piece I wrote on Lewis this week, the Appeal found a grand jury report dealing with Lewis' big project developments as city manager of Stockton, Calif. The report showed that costs associated with development of the the Stockton ballpark and events center swelled from an estimate of $75 million to more than $120 million, and placed the blame for this on Lewis and the lack of oversight by the city's elected officials.
Carson City Arbor Day 2010 Celebration

NV Energy giving V&T reconstruction commission $100,000 check
