To support local merchants impacted by the ongoing East William Complete Streets Project, the Carson City Community and Economic Development office is launching a summer campaign asking locals to “Walk About William Street.”

Running from June 22 through July 20, 2026, the initiative aims to drive customer foot traffic back to storefronts that have been hindered by heavy construction and utility work.

The campaign turns shopping into an interactive experience. Customers must physically enter participating businesses to answer specific questions, such as identifying the number of booths in a restaurant or locating a specific item on a particular aisle. For those who complete the treasure hunt, they will be entered into a raffle with an array of prizes at the end of the campaign timeframe.

The economic development office is working directly with business owners to establish the questions and is asking merchants to donate gift cards and similar items to serve as prizes for customers who successfully complete the event. Any business on E. William Street who would like to participate is wholeheartedly invited.

The promotion arrives as the city navigates recent construction delays on a critical portion of the Complete Streets project.

The work between Carson Street and Roop Street, which was meant to be completed by the end of May, has been delayed due to unforeseen underground contamination and unknown utility conflicts, according to a Public Works spokesperson. Roadway removal and paving in that section are now slated to begin by the end of June.

Despite the setback on the Carson-to-Roop segment, contractors have expedited work in other areas to maintain momentum, and the overall corridor construction remains on track for completion later this year, Public Works said.

The East William Complete Streets Project is a major, multi-million dollar undertaking that aims to modernize the former state highway into a corridor that accommodates all road users.

Over 40% of the project involves underground work as part of a “dig once” approach to replace and upgrade aging water, sewer, and storm drain infrastructure before resurfacing the road.

When completed, the corridor will feature narrower 11-foot travel lanes to naturally slow traffic speeds, buffered bike lanes, wider sidewalks, and new medians designed to increase traffic calming and pedestrian safety. See our previous reporting below.

The Carson City Community and Economic Development office will handle all promotion and facilitation for the Walk About event. For business on E. William who would like to participate in the Walk About, please contact Community and Economic Development by emailing planning@carsoncity.gov, or by calling (775) 887-2180.

Residents with questions regarding the Complete Streets construction project itself can contact Darren Anderson at 775-283-7584 or danderson@carsoncity.gov.
