Western Nevada College holds first Multi-faith Baccalaureate Service
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Thu, 05/23/2013 - 9:28amWestern Nevada College held a unique Multi-faith Baccalaureate Service on May 20 in Carson City, the first in its 41 plus years of existence.
According to religious statesman Rajan Zed, co-organizer of this Service along with Douglas Diversity Student Club of WNC; faith leaders belonging to Christian (various denominations), Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Jewish, Baha’i and Native American traditions blessed the graduates with their respective prayers in this Service. Dance and music also formed part of this ceremony and a representative of non-believers also addressed the Service.

A Tony Award-winning classic, Oliver! is the musical retelling of Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist. The story tells of a child who is sold by a London orphanage because he asked for more food. Oliver eventually escapes to the streets of London, finding adventure and a loving home.

Carson City Symphony's Strings in the Schools led by Carson City Symphony Education Director Sue Jesch present a festival featuring the Music of Jay Ungar and Molly Mason on Saturday, May 11.
The concert will be at Empire Elementary School, 1260 Monte Rosa Drive, Carson City. It includes a workshop from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. for string players of all ages, a potluck lunch, and a public concert beginning at 3:00 p.m. Admission to the festival and the concert is free, donations welcome.

3. To attend our first-ever "Palm Springs Follies" show in Palm Springs.
4. To fly from Indio to Big Bear (our first-ever visit there).

‘The Nutcracker’ returns to Carson City for three performances

The Nutcracker Ballet is based on the story “The Nutcracker and the King of Mice” written by E.T.A. Hoffman. It is the story of a young German girl, Clara, who dreams of a Nutcracker Prince and a fierce battle against a Mouse King with seven heads. Scored by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, the ballet features one of the holiday season’s most famous pieces of classical music.

All cultures celebrate the dead as well as mourn them. And the first of November usually marks the Day of the Dead, also known as Dia de los Muertos. In Carson City there will be a multicultural celebration Saturday, November 10, to honor loved ones who have passed away with stories, crafts, songs and exhibits, colorful folklore dancers. The Day of the Dead, Dia de los Muertos event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Nevada State Museum.

The arrival of the Traveling Vietnam Wall marks the Battle Born Days Celebration highlighted during this year's Nevada Day, with a salute to America's military that includes living history re-enactments, tributes and military honors, aircraft and weapon displays, a USO dance and Bomber Girl Pin-Up Pageant.

Hundreds arrive in Carson City motorcycle convoy with Traveling Vietnam Wall (Photo Gallery)

Veterans and local military personnel assisted in the convoy that began from the Silverado Casino in Fernley and ended at Mills Park in Carson City, where it will be put up overnight in time for Nevada Day Festivities.

After the first half of the concert, harmonica player Tom Stryker will lead a harmonica workshop for youth attending the concert. Each will be given a harmonica and learn to play a tune. After intermission, they will perform on stage.

October 10, 2012 - 6:30pm It's Folk Music Night time again this Wednesday at Grandma Hattie's Restaurant in Carson City. Enjoy an eclectic mix of acoustic music that includes favorite folk tunes and songs like Celtic, Appalacian, Cowboy and Popular songs including some done by the Beach Boys, James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt, Johnnie Cash and more. Grandma Hattie's is a full service restaurant, so you can make this your dinner show and sing or dance along, too. This event is family and kid friendly, so bring the whole family. Folk music night has been a regular monthly event in in Carson City since 2003.

October 20, 2012 - 7:00pm High Sierra Swing Dance Club presents a free dance lesson at its annual Halloween costume ball 7-10:30 p.m. on Oct. 20 at the Brewery Arts Center’s Grand Ballroom, 449 W. King St., Carson City. Tim Renner will teach a free beginner West Coast swing lesson at 7 p.m.; afterwards, all new dancers may stay for the 8 p.m. dance for free. Costumes are optional, but there will be prizes for best holiday attire in three categories. Spooky Woods will spin appropriately scary dance tunes. Partners are not required.
