Food for Thought gets help from Carson Nugget to feed needy children this summer

Carson City nonprofit Food for Thought has teamed up with the Carson Nugget to make sure needy children stay fed this summer.

“We were in need of a kitchen to make lunches for children in our program and the Carson Nugget stepped right up to the plate and agreed to allow us to use their kitchen facilities,” said Stephanie Gardner, executive director, Food for Thought. “This is great because it will allow us to continue this much needed program during the summer months when school is not in session.”

Downtown Coin Club show brings buyers, sellers and collectors to Carson City

Rare coins by the thousands remain on display, for sale or trade today through 4 p.m. at the Carson Nugget at the annual Downtown Coin Club Show. This all-ages coin event brought more than 300 collectors and numismatics to the Nugget on Saturday.

Western Nevada College to graduate its largest class Monday

CARSON CITY — For the fourth consecutive year, Western Nevada College will graduate its largest class in history. The class of 2013 is 505 students strong, with 530 degrees and certificates being issued.

Four students will receive Bachelor of Technology degrees in construction management, and three students will graduate with bachelor’s degrees as part of WNC’s teacher preparation partnership with Nevada State College. The graduates span 60 years, from the youngest at age 17 and the eldest at 77.

Women to Women Nevada with Katherine Lima

Women to Women Nevada with Carol Paz welcomes this week's guest, Katherine Lima, a member of the Advisory Board at Carson Valley Medical Center and member of Crystal Angels, a local organization that began in 1997 that helps families and children in need. The membership includes 90 women who meet regularly throughout the year to generate money through raffles in which children and families receive Christmas gifts.

The winners of the Carson Memories photo contest were announced this week in a ceremony held at the Carson Nugget.

The Carson Memories contest asked participants to submit their favorite photos demonstrating something special or distinct about the Carson City area.

The winning photos, along with the other select photos, are being incorporated into an exhibit created by Gardnerville artist, Beverly Caputo. The exhibit is featured next to a recently finished mural painted by Caputo. The mural depicts key people, places and things of historical relevance to Carson City.

Entertaining audiences for more than 25 years, comedian and inspirational humorist Kat Simmons is this week's guest on Women to Women Nevada with Carol Paz.

You may have seen her at The Improvs, Catch A Rising Star, the Comedy Channel, Fox’s Comedy Tonight, or on Candid Camera. She is currently a regular cast member of the national comedy hit, The 3 Blonde Moms. Kat hosts her own cable show called, "Speak Up, With Kat Simmons." She won the eWomen Network's international talent contest in Dallas in 2009.

Earth and science will be in the spotlight at Western Nevada College next week with two free lectures in Carson City that will feature discussions on global warming and the geologic history of Lake Tahoe. The events highlight a series of activities during Earth Week, April 22-27.

'Always Lost: A Meditation on War' exhibit honored at Nevada Legislature

“Always Lost: A Meditation on War” has returned home to Carson City and was given full honors Wednesday at the Nevada Legislature.

Western Nevada College’s acclaimed creative writing/photographic exhibition about the costs of war will be on display in the Nevada Legislative Building’s second-floor atrium weekdays through May 3.

Earth Week celebrated at Western Nevada College campuses in Carson City, Fallon

Two free lectures by science experts - one about the violent geologic history of Lake Tahoe, another concerning global warming, will highlight the many free activities at Western Nevada College during Earth Week, April 22-27.
Renewable energy exhibits, an organic gardening lecture, alternative fuel vehicles and a tree planting ceremony will also be featured.

“Many diverse and interesting activities will be offered,” said Valerie Andersen, WNC public service librarian and college Earth Week event coordinator. Students, faculty and the public are invited to attend.

CARSON CITY, NV - For the second year in a row, area residents came out by the hundreds to enjoy an evening of pizza, beer, music and fundraising for a good cause. The second annual Carson City Rotary Club Beer and Pizza Championships was a big success, raising more than $25,000 to assist with a number of community needs.

High Sierra Swing Dance contest 'celebs' prepare for big night

Six local Carson City celebrities are competing in a "Dancing With the Stars"- type contest at the High Sierra Swing Dance Club’s sixth anniversary dinner-dance on April 27 at the Carson Nugget.

The "Local Celebrities Who Think They Can Dance" contestants have been paired with local dance instructors for a variety of dances, including swing, country, Latin, and hip hop. The instructors are Jo Ann Grace, Rainer Herm, Emily Thicke, Armando Nevarez, Earl Case and Bob Truesdale.

New video documentary highlights FISH fundraising banquet

UPDATED: With the theme "Opening Your Heart Is The Key To Opening Doors" more than 150 attended a banquet for Friends in Helping Service, better known as FISH, on Thursday at the Carson Nugget. Along with dinner, wine and a silent auction, guests were treated to a video documentary that highlights the Carson City nonprofit agency which has provided food and shelter to those in need for 34 years.

Honorees at the event were State Senator Debbie Smith and former Carson City Supervisor Shelly Aldean.

At least 28 employers will be at a job fair featured at the Carson City Senior Center today, Friday, Feb. 22. The event runs from 2 to 4 p.m. in the dining area and is open to the public, said Lynn Ellis, WorkForce Case Manager for Carson City Health and Human Services. The event is sponosored by Carson City Health and Human Services, JOIN and Job Connect.

Carson City ice rink season extended to Feb. 18

The Arlington Square Ice Rink in Carson City will continue its operation through Feb. 18. The rink, located at the corner of North Carson Street and West Robinson across from the Carson Nugget, has enjoyed steady crowds and plenty of use through the season.
Skate sessions are Monday - Thursday 3-5pm and 6-9pm; Friday 3-5pm and 6-10pm; Saturday 10am-1pm and 2-5pm and 6-10pm; Sunday 10am-1pm and 2-5pm and 6-9pm.

The white walls on the second floor, outside the banquet rooms of the Carson Nugget, are in the process of being transformed. Right now they contain the mural paintings of Kit Carson, V&T Railroad, Dat So La Lee, the Carson Mint, Carson Nugget, Roosevelt’s Speech Capital Building, Carson Brewery and Capital Building; but soon those walls could contain so much more.

“The hope is to show Carson City’s uniqueness as well as the love and pride we have for our home and community,” said Gardnerville artist Beverly Caputo.

Carson City Chamber's Health, Wellness and Beauty Faire targets resolution makers

More than 100 residents from around the area set to make good on their New Year's resolutions gathered Saturday at the Carson Nugget ballroom to take advantage of the free Carson City Chamber of Commerce Health, Wellness and Beauty Faire.

Go easy on yourself in 2013 was among the many themes at the heath faire, where guests walked through to get their blood pressure checked, sample tasty health foods, compare insurance options and home health care needs, get free flu shots and learn about the many ways to maintain good healthy habits for the year.

At least 350 attended Saturday night's Winter Wine and All That Jazz at the Carson Nugget Ballroom in Carson City. The wine tasting and jazz event was a fundraiser for the Brewery Arts Center. Attendees sipped, sampled and tasted more than 40 wines from around the region, listened to great jazz and even danced into the evening.

The event begins with a networking session at 8:30 a.m. and Congressman Amodei will begin his address at 9 a.m.

He has handled contract disputes, personal injuries, bad faith by insurance companies, probate, estates and trusts, appeals, and a murder case.
