Outdoors with Don Q: Having fun, again, in Southern California

Elaine and I spent March 28-April 07 on a fun-filled, springtime return to Southern California for several reasons:
1. To celebrate our 11th Wedding Anniversary (March 30).
2. To visit my cousin Lorraine Scholes and her husband Bob, who have a winter home in Indio.
3. To attend our first-ever "Palm Springs Follies" show in Palm Springs.
4. To fly from Indio to Big Bear (our first-ever visit there).

The Sierra Nevada Bass Club fished Folsom Lake, Calif., on March 30th with 6 boats and 12 Anglers with all but 1 angler catching and releasing a variety of Black Bass species that were in various stages of spawn.

The largest fish of each species were  a 5-15 Largemouth, a 5-03 Spotted both caught and released by Ted Doyal, of Minden and a 2-14 Smallmouth by Ried Bridges of Carson City.

In all, 28 Bass totaling some 55-pounds were released following the weigh-in at Granite Bay.

You just might want to seriously consider ICR as it contains cutthroat, brown and rainbow trout, plus even some bass.

That trout-filled reservoir is a mere 39 miles from our front door and it is easily reached from here by two different directions:

As a special tip you would be well advised to purchase that new license ASAP, because if you forget, go fishing and get checked by “The Friendly Old Game Warden,” he isn’t going to be very happy nor will you.

Outdoors with Don Q: What you need to know about ice fishing

With the bitter January cold weather in the Sierra behind us, we do have plenty of water frozen on our creeks, streams, rivers, ponds, lakes and reservoirs. And that ice covering provides an excellent opportunity to catch fish.
Ice fishing is a unique sport that requires a whole different set of fishing techniques, gear and clothing, as opposed to lazy fishing on a warm, drowsy day in the middle of the summer. So, if you’ve never tried fishing through the ice, here’s some information that should be more than enough to get you “hooked” on this winter sport:

Seven-year-old Grass Valley girl lands a 10.5 pound brown trout on Lake Tahoe

We were there to help Paul Dankowski, Game Warden and Operation Game Thief (OGT) Coordinator for the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW).

The two of us serve as State Directors on the OGT Citizen's Board, and had volunteered to man the OGT exhibit trailer for those two days.

Outdoors with Don Q: Some resolutions for the New Year 2013

First, let me say Happy New Year. This is the first part of January and this is also a good time for all of us (including me) to make some personal resolutions for the year 2013.
Most importantly, remember that if you do make any resolutions, be sure to follow through with what you resolve to do in this new year.
Resolutions are easy to make, but sometimes hard to accomplish.
I have a number of things I would like to accomplish this year, so without any further ado, here are my 2013 resolutions:

I RESOLVE TO:
Finally catch a fish larger than Elaine's:
