Sierra Nevada Bass Club Topaz Open results; next open July 13 at Lake Almanor

July 13, 2013 (All day) The Sierra Nevada Bass Club sponsored the Topaz Open over Father's Day Weekend (June 15-16) at Topaz Landing/Marina and Lodge/Casino. With four boats and 7 anglers making the trip and all but one managed to catch legal fish to bring to the scale during the two day event.

Nevada’s 2013 Free Fishing Day is Saturday, June 8

June 8 is Nevada’s Free Fishing Day for the year 2013. On that day, you can fish anywhere you want, and not need a Nevada fishing license or a Nevada Trout Stamp or a Nevada Second Rod Stamp.

One of the derbies is the Lake Davis (California) Spring Fishing Derby which will be held on Saturday, June 15.
The other one is a "Wide Open" Derby which will be held at Topaz Lake on Saturday-Sunday, June 15-16.

I'm referring to Davis Lake and Frenchman Reservoir.
Davis Lake:
It can be reached from Carson City by taking U.S. 395 north to Reno.
Then from Reno, drive past Bordertown and the Nevada-California state line to a junction with California S.R. 70 at Hallelujah Junction.
At Hallelujah Junction, take S.R. 70 west toward Portola and Quincy.

That season will then remain open until Friday, Nov. 15.

1. To celebrate our 11th Wedding Anniversary (March 30).
2. To visit my cousin Lorraine Scholes and her husband Bob, who have a winter home in Indio.
3. To attend our first-ever "Palm Springs Follies" show in Palm Springs.
4. To fly from Indio to Big Bear (our first-ever visit there).

Sierra Nevada Bass Club Folsom Lake Tournament and upcoming events
Submitted by Don Quilici on Thu, 04/04/2013 - 2:01amThe Sierra Nevada Bass Club fished Folsom Lake, Calif., on March 30th with 6 boats and 12 Anglers with all but 1 angler catching and releasing a variety of Black Bass species that were in various stages of spawn.
Rain was predicted last Saturday, but didn't deter the Bass bite.
The largest fish of each species were a 5-15 Largemouth, a 5-03 Spotted both caught and released by Ted Doyal, of Minden and a 2-14 Smallmouth by Ried Bridges of Carson City.
In all, 28 Bass totaling some 55-pounds were released following the weigh-in at Granite Bay.

Outdoors with Don Q: Indian Creek Reservoir in the Springtime
Submitted by Don Quilici on Thu, 04/04/2013 - 1:57amIf you have a 2013 California fishing license and if you are looking for somewhere to fish that is fairly close to the Carson City area, look no further than Indian Creek Reservoir (ICR) in nearby Alpine County.
You just might want to seriously consider ICR as it contains cutthroat, brown and rainbow trout, plus even some bass.
That trout-filled reservoir is a mere 39 miles from our front door and it is easily reached from here by two different directions:

Outdoors with Don Q: Lahontan Cutthroat Trout fishing in March
Submitted by Don Quilici on Thu, 03/21/2013 - 8:30amThis is my annual reminder that if you are a trout fisherman and are new to our area, you may not be aware that some of our best Lahontan Cutthroat Trout fishing is at Pyramid Lake in the month of March.
And, with our current fabulous weather, you would be remiss if you did not take advantage of our record setting high temperatures, it may not last!
Pyramid Lake (which is roughly the same surface size as Lake Tahoe) is about 30 miles north of Reno-Sparks, and it contains Lahontan Cutthroat Trout that can run into “Double Digits” in weight. That's big!

Indian Creek Reservoir (ICR) is a man-made reservoir located in the backcountry between Woodfords and Markleeville. ICR and its surrounding area is managed and maintained by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM).

That new fishing license year begins on March 1 and it will run through the last day in February, 2014.
As a special tip you would be well advised to purchase that new license ASAP, because if you forget, go fishing and get checked by “The Friendly Old Game Warden,” he isn’t going to be very happy nor will you.

46th annual Blake Jones Trout Derby north of Bishop
Submitted by Don Quilici on Sat, 02/02/2013 - 3:31pmThis year marks the 46th consecutive year that Bishop, California will celebrate the sport of trout fishing by hosting an early season derby bearing the name of legendary fisherman Blake Jones.
On Saturday, March 16th the Bishop Area Chamber of Commerce expects upwards of 1,000 anglers to participate in the contest, which is one of the state’s biggest annual single-day fishing events.

Seven-year-old Grass Valley girl lands a 10.5 pound brown trout on Lake Tahoe

We decided to go to Lake Tahoe for the day to get the boat inspected and pre fish for some upcoming trips.
We took our granddaughter, Brooke with us. After the inspection was complete we launched at Cave Rock and immediately started fishing.

Outdoors with Don Q: Two interesting days at a sport show
Submitted by Don Quilici on Thu, 01/17/2013 - 8:41amElaine and I spent last Friday and Saturday manning an exhibit at the ninth annual Grand Slam Club OVIS Hunter and Outfitter Convention held at the Grand Sierra Hotel and Casino Hotel in Reno.
We were there to help Paul Dankowski, Game Warden and Operation Game Thief (OGT) Coordinator for the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW).
The two of us serve as State Directors on the OGT Citizen's Board, and had volunteered to man the OGT exhibit trailer for those two days.
