The Western Nevada Musical Theatre Company is used to building big Broadway productions this time of year, generally drawing from 6,000 to more than 7,000 people from 20 states and Canada. But there’s a bit of a problem.

The community theatre companies in Carson City and Douglas County, along with our local performance venues, have created a coalition with the goal of navigating the challenges specific to our local theatre community brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Western Nevada College, working with a core of performers from the Western Nevada Musical Theatre Company, has created a virtual choir — Broadway Rising! — to share the power and beauty of Broadway during these times when live performance is no longer possible.

The weekend is at our doorstep as we head into Friday, May 10, 2019. Even though forecasters say we may have showers this weekend, the cool spring rain won't dampen the fun. We have a bevy of activities lined up Friday including the opening of the Transcontinental Railroad exhibit at the Nevada State Railroad Museum, day 1 of the two-day Mother's Day Plant Sale hosted by The Greenhouse Project, RSVP's Spring Celebration and Carnival at Mills Park, a day hike, art showings, live music and more.

The Western Nevada Musical Theatre Company presents Gershwin's Tony-winning Broadway hit, “Crazy for You” at the Carson City Community Center beginning Friday and running weekends through May 19.

Don't let the Interstate 580 freeway closure put a damper on your Sunday. There is still plenty to do close to home in Carson City.

This weekend appears to have gone to the dogs — and cats — as Maddie's Pet Adoption Days continue Saturday at venues throughout the Carson City area.

On tap is a morning walk hosted by Muscle Powered, a memorial dedication ceremony on the capitol grounds and a pickle ball tournament at the MAC. Renowned Artist Terese Nielsen will do a signing at The Hydra's Lair and our own Western Nevada Musical Theatre presents the start of the second week of "Mamma Mia!"

How about a high temperature of 74 degrees in the Nevada state capital on the first Sunday of November? That's according to the National Weather Service in Reno, and it ought to be motivation enough to get outside, soak up the warm weather and enjoy all that the Carson City area has to offer.

Take advantage of the extra daylight while it lasts. Saturday is the final day of the year for Daylight Savings Time. Be sure to "fall back" one hour on your clocks Saturday night into early Sunday when Standard Time takes over.

It’s going to be a chili weekend, and that has nothing to do with the weather. The annual Chili on the Comstock Competition takes over the tiny town of Virginia City, including a saloon crawl Saturday and the hilarious ‘Fun with the Runs’ 5K. Families will have a hard time choosing between the Cops and Kids Open House and Safety Fair at the Sheriff’s Office and the ‘Kids to Parks’ Day activities at Silver Saddle Ranch. We’re in for another gray day, but that won’t affect the fun to be had. Bike to Work Week always ends in a big bash. Head down to McFadden Plaza, even if you didn’t take the challenge personally. You’ll find live music, raffles, bike games, and too much fun. Western Nevada Musical Theater Company returns for another weekend of Singin’ in the Rain at the Bob Boldrick Theater. Antsy McClain and the Trailer Park Troubadours are waiting to entertain you at the Brewery Arts Center. There may be some balcony seating still available, but tickets are very limited.

Mother’s Day is Sunday, and there will be plenty of ways for the family to enjoy spending time together all weekend long. Treat Mom to some new flowers for the garden at the annual Greenhouse Project Plant Sale. The Nevada State Museum has a day full of cowboy-related activities planned. Head up to Virginia City on the V and T for a memorable ride through the hills. 'Singin in the Rain' is probably one of my favorite movies, but I have no doubt that the Western Nevada Musical Theater Company has taken the classic to new heights. Get tickets now if you'd like to catch their production, they are known for sold-out shows. Funnel cakes, Ferris Wheels, and more are waiting for you at Mills Park. A carnival is a great way to help Mom celebrate her special day.

Sunday is usually synonymous with football this time of year. Raiders fans, and non-fans for that matter, are invited to the Eleventh Frame Lounge inside Carson Lanes to watch the game and join in the annual Adopt-a-Senior Fundraiser. The annual Holiday Craft Fair at Carson High features a plethora of handmade and locally crafted gifts for the loved ones on your shopping list. Take the plunge at the Carson Aquatic Center if you want to get a picture with Scuba Santa. Grab a coat, some friends, and your ID and head downtown for this month’s beer crawl. $15 gets you a glass and your first beer, from there you’ll pay only $1 for refills at several watering holes. Although Veterans Day was observed yesterday, there are several things today that honor our former members of the military. Battle Born Harley Davidson is throwing an appreciation party complete with food trucks. Virginia City’s annual Veterans Day Parade begins at 11 a.m. and the City of Reno will commence their parade after a short ceremony beginning at 11:11 a.m. You’ll find an abundance of craft fairs in Carson City, Carson Valley, and Dayton. On Veterans Day, we take time to honor those men and women that have served in our armed forces. The holiday is observed today, meaning schools and public offices will be closed. Several locations have something special for Veterans this weekend, go HERE for a list of freebies, specials and discounts good today or tomorrow.

Sometime in the middle of the night, we gained an extra hour. Use those sixty minutes any way you’d like: extra time in bed, Community Yoga at Comma Coffee, or maybe doing something fun with the kids. Head out to Tumbleweeds in Minden for Family Fun and Fit Day and let the kids burn off a week’s worth of Halloween candy. The Nevada Artists Association is hosting a reception for their artists this afternoon. If you haven’t seen the new Nevada Show, it’s the perfect time to check it out and vote for your favorite piece.

Welcome to the weekend, Carson City. Now that we are in November, thoughts turn to the holiday season. That means craft fairs. St. Paul’s Lutheran Family on Saliman welcomes you to their annual Craftique Open House. You’ll find the Young at Heart Seniors Club hosting a faire at the Douglas County Community Center. The Carson Nugget’s Sierra Room will be home to several artisans, vendors, and crafters during today’s wine walk. There’s quite a bit more, and plenty that doesn’t involve shopping, so take a look and have a great time.

Pamper the special lady in your life with a soak at the Carson Hot Springs. It’s free for moms today, but fun for the whole family. If breakfast-in-bed isn’t the plan, head to the Douglas County Museum for the Lions Club’s annual pancake breakfast. More adventurous mothers may want to try their hand at BMX racing, with a special race just for them at the Livermore Sports Complex.
