It was an eventful year around the Carson City region notwithstanding the limitations caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Here's some notable stories that were not pandemic related that happened in 2020.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region. Several fundraisers, including the annual “Share Your Christmas” Food Drive will be available throughout the Carson City, Minden and Reno areas on Friday. You can visit the North Pole safely as part of a drive-thru Santa's Village experience at V&T Railway in Carson City, beginning Friday into the weekend. A living nativity scene will be featured at First United Methodist Church on Saturday and Sunday. Combined with train rides in Virginia City, the state capital will be buzzing with excitement. ‘Tis the season for a fun outdoors holiday adventure. Join us for our annual Holiday Hike at Silver Saddle Ranch this Saturday, Dec. 12 at 11 a.m. We will hike around and learn about the history of the Holidays. This hike will be socially distanced, and everyone is required to wear a mask. We can’t wait to see you there!

The Carson City Parks, Recreation & Open Space Department opened three new segments of trail following an Oct. 30 ribbon cutting. These fun new trails are part of a network of non-motorized paths that connect residents with almost 5,000 acres of Carson City Parks and Open Space within the Carson River/Prison Hill area. Future plans include completing a multi-use path around Prison Hill.

Heading into the final weekend of October, Halloween and Nevada Day events will keep revelers busy through Sunday making for a jam packed weekend of fun for families and grownups around the Carson City region.

Celebrating Halloween in Carson City is really unlike any other place because the holiday sometimes lands on the same day as many Nevada Day festivities are underway. To have a more organized and safe Halloween for children, Carson City will again host its "BOOnanza" celebration this Thursday, and the Children's Museum will host a safe trick or treating event Friday.

The Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department will host a special Full Moon Hike this Saturday, October 31st, at Silver Saddle Ranch. Come experience a full moon costume adventure that can only happen once in a Blue Moon.

Meet at Silver Saddle Ranch dressed in your best Halloween Costume. We will walk to the Carson River and back to ranch in a 2 mile loop. The trail is considered Easy according to the IMBA Trail Rating System.

UPDATE 12:26 p.m.: She is in custody and unharmed, but very dehydrated. No injuries reported.

UPDATE: As of 12:16 p.m. it appears the woman has surrendered to deputies following a nearly three hours long stand off in the area of Prison Hill. No injuries have been reported. She set the fire arm down, put her hands on her head and knelt on the ground. Her vehicle is disabled.

A standoff in the hills near Prison Hill Tuesday morning is currently underway between Carson City Sheriff’s Office and a young woman who had claimed to have shot her mother, and is threatening to kill herself.

Mile High Jazz Band Association continues the 2020 Jazz & Beyond Festival’s series of live-streamed, streamed, and virtual events through September 27, 2020.

The next event, A Day at the Ranchette, is today, Sunday, September 20, 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., features the Sagebrush Rebels. This event was moved from Silver Saddle Ranch, and in-person attendance is sold out. However, it will be live-streamed on Facebook by A to Zen Media in Carson City. Carson City Kiwanis is hosting its seventh annual Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Day on Saturday with several activities for all to enjoy. The B.P.O.E. Elks Lodge in Carson City recognizes annually people who have excelled in volunteering their time to help make their respective communities a better place for all. This year the Carson City Elks Lodge has proudly recognized Carol Park as citizen of the year.

The Carson City Jazz and Beyond Music and Art Festival is taking a new direction in response to the coronavirus pandemic. The festival was founded in 2004. This is the first year in which gathering of large crowds at musical events has been restricted due to health concerns.

The Jazz & Beyond festival committee is rescheduling many of the events originally planned for August 2020 because of the recent rise in coronavirus cases. However, the committee plans to go ahead with the second annual Open Studios Tour from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, August 22, and Sunday, August 23. Admission is free.

Periodically, the Foundation for Carson City Parks and Recreation recognizes individuals, organizations, and businesses for having made notable contributions to our community and for their support of the Foundation’s and Carson City Parks Department’s missions by selecting them to receive a Community Award. FCCPR’s Board of Directors recently selected Friends of Silver Saddle and Cinderlite Trucking Corporation and Materials (Cinderlite) for this year’s Community Awards.

The Jazz and Beyond festival committee announces that the winner of the 2020 poster and program cover art contest is Karen Kreyeski, for her entry, “After Midnight Jam.” The winner of the T-shirt design is Evan Tynan, for “2020 Jazz & Beyond Festival Logo.” These were selected from ten entries to highlight the 17th annual Carson City music and art festival.

In light of current directives from the Governor related to health concerns, many facilities are closed, leaving few options for exercise and recreation. The Carson City Parks, Recreation & Open Space Department reports that an unprecedented number of people are utilizing Carson City’s more than 8,000 acres of parks, trails and open space. Trailhead parking in some locations is over capacity.

The Waterfall trailhead on Kings Canyon Road is experiencing especially large numbers of visitors, resulting in traffic congestion and parking related issues.

The Carson City Sheriff's Office Investigations Division is asking for the public's assistance in identifying two men who are suspected of breaking into vehicles parked at the Carson City trailhead at Silver Saddle Ranch on Carson River Road and at the Korean War Veterans Memorial Park off of Fifth Street.

Heading into Tuesday, sunny skies and more springlike weather are ahead before active weather patterns start up again later in the week. Activities lined up around the capital city include morning and evening walks hosted by Muscle Powered. You can join true crime, paranormal writer Janice Oberding at Nevada State Library and Archives for a brown bag luncheon. There's a meeting of the Carson Fly Fishing Club at the sheriff's office, a paint and sip night at Living the Good Life and you can join Mile High Jazz Band at Comma Coffee for a 'Fate & Fortune' evening of music and poetry. Heading into the start of the work week, temperatures will be comparatively cool compared to last week with daytime highs near 55. The Greenhouse Project will be in the spotlight at a Carson City Democratic luncheon, plus fitness events, West Coast swing dance lessons at Carson Lanes and a Carson City Parks and Rec led full moon hike up Dead Truck Canyon. Muscle Powered is a local non-profit organization that promotes walking, hiking, biking and trail building. The March 10 morning walk will be at Silver Saddle Ranch to Mexican Dam. Meet near the red barns on Silver Saddle Ranch on Carson River Road. Dirt trail. From Carson River Road turn into the dirt road by Silver Saddle Ranch sign. Follow the signs on the one way road to parking lot.

The Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department will be hosting March's Full Moon Hike up Dead Truck Canyon on Prison Hill on Monday, March 9. This hike will feature the "Worm Moon," an abandoned 1950's truck and plenty of beautiful terrain.

Carson City area citizens spent their MLK Day in the canyons near East Silver Saddle Ranch cleaning up dumpsites. In total, more than 50 volunteers removed 7,080 pounds of trash from the natural area. Items of all kinds were taken out of the canyons including plastic bottles, tires, yard trimmings, toys, and even kitchen sinks.
