On the books today is the Loud as Folk concert at the Brewery Arts Center, a tour of the Carson River, a morning walk of the newly opened Linear Ditch Trail, Moon Lectures, and more!

Hello Carson City, we are rounding third and headed into the weekend. Today is Thursday, Oct. 11, 2018. Among featured events include a morning coffee networking meeting, an afternoon hike, a spiritual conversation with a Hindu statesman at St. Paul's Lutheran Family Church, art showings and more.

The year 1968 was one of turmoil. The Vietnam War was intensifying, and protests were increasing back home. Martin Luther King Jr. and presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy were both assassinated. Urban riots were common, and college unrest was widespread.

The Carson Water Subconservancy District is offering a two-day bus tour of the Carson River Watershed. The Carson River Watershed “Get on the Bus” Tour will cover a variety of watershed topics and locations from the headwaters in Alpine County, Calif., to a tour of the Lahontan Dam and Gate House near Fallon.

All hikes are 2-4 miles with duration of about 90 minutes, sometimes with elevation gains of 500' or more. Hike duration does not include time to carpool. Another successful volunteer event was held this Saturday at East Silver Saddle Ranch in Carson City. Our department wants to extend our heartfelt appreciation to our small but mighty group of 4 who attended Saturday's cottonwood wrapping. We successfully wrapped 25 trees in about a 90 minute time span.

Mother Nature and Father Time often don't agree here in Northern Nevada. While the calendar marks today as the official start to Fall, the weather still feels like summer.

On Saturday, Sept. 15, nearly 200 Carson High School's Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps, also known as NJROTC, participated in a mass clean-up of East Silver Saddle Ranch in Carson City.

September 22nd is the first day of fall and National Public Lands Day. To celebrate both of these events, we are hosting a cottonwood wrapping event at East Silver Saddle Ranch!

Our amazing staff will be providing a lesson on river ecology and talk about the importance of cottonwood wrapping.

We will be providing gloves and all the materials and information necessary to correctly wrap cottonwoods.

A day of remembrance, heroism that won’t be forgotten, today is Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2018. Among Carson City featured events include a presentation by Nevada’s Homeland Security Advisor at the Nevada State Library, a National Day of Service outdoor cleanup at Silver Saddle Ranch and a 9/11 Memorial Service at Mills Park. It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas. Don’t worry, you’ve still got four months for your holiday shopping, but Santa needs to hire a few helpers. The annual Polar Express on the V & T is getting ready to steam up and they are auditioning for elves etc. to lend a hand. The Nevada Arts Council has a new exhibit featuring Basque artwork; attend this evening’s artist reception to learn more about these unusual carvings. The ESL at Home program works quietly behind the scenes to bring better English language skills to non-native speakers.

The last weekend of August holds tight to summertime tradition. Get something fresh from the field at Farmers Markets in Carson City, Genoa, and Dayton. Celebrate the end of summer with La Chamba on the Brewery Arts Center outdoor stage – one more season of Levitt Amp Community Concerts successfully behind us. Whether you want something fun to do with your ‘grown-up’ friends or something for the whole family to enjoy, take a look! There’s a little bit for everyone.

Join us. Sept. 11, 2018 is National Day of Service. The Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space department invites you to come out and participate in a river clean-up of East Silver Saddle Ranch. The parking lot is located a mile off of the Carson River Road, turn onto Sierra Vista Lane.

We are running out of summer weekends. I know that’s hard to believe right now, but hoodies and everything pumpkin is just beyond the horizon. Grab summer with both hands and go enjoy this beautiful city. The Brewery Arts Center brings Dennis Johnson and the Mississippi Ramblers to the stage for tonight’s free concert. Check out the Railroad Museum for your fill of music and antique motor cars. Car lovers have two shows to choose from today: spectators will be able to enjoy both, but you’ll have to pick one if you want to enter your ride. Keep reading for more summertime fun.

Thank goodness for Thursday. The weekend is just hours away, but there is no reason to wait for the fun to start. Take a stroll with Muscle Powered: today’s hike will wind through the far east side of Carson, from Silver Saddle Ranch to Mexican Dam. Artsy Fartsy Art Galley hosts an artist meet and greet for Catherine King; enjoy a glass of wine while discovering her newest work. Head down the rabbit hole, and you may wind up on McFadden Plaza. The Carson City Classic Cinema Club brings the recent live-action version of Alice in Wonderland to the big screen on the downtown stage.

I’m not even going to speculate on the air quality, but please use your best judgement when choosing your activities and there may be some cancellations that I am not aware of. Downtown has a full day of options, but the back roads may be a little more difficult to navigate due to construction projects. The great music that awaits will be worth the hassle. Hat, sunscreen and hiking poles recommended. Some trails are dirt and others are paved. In case of bad weather, we will cancel.

Due to heavy smoke settling on the area, the RoseBud's Dance Band's performance for Monday, Aug. 6, as part of the Carson City Jazz and Beyond Music and Art Festival has been moved to inside the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall, 511 W. King St. The concert was originally planned for Comma Courtyard, but the performers want to present the event in a comfortable and healthy atmosphere.

Let’s get August off to a good start. The first Saturday of the month always plays host to the Downtown Carson City Wine Walk, but with the Jazz and Beyond Musical Festival in full swing, you’ll have even more reasons to meander around downtown. The afternoon ice cream social at the historic Foreman-Roberts House is a perfect family-friendly treat before heading to the Brewery Arts Center for tonight’s free concert. Keep reading, you’ll find a little bit of something for everyone in the Carson City, Carson Valley, Dayton and Virginia City areas.

Friday opens the 15th annual Jazz and Beyond Music and Art Festival in Carson City that features 17 days of music, art and film at multiple venues in Carson City, August 3-19.

I have long found it impossible to decide which Carson City event is my favorite: forever waffling between Nevada Day and the Taste of Downtown. Seeing as the annual parade is still months away, I’m going to side with ‘The Taste’ purely for its timeliness. With over forty local eateries participating, multiple raffles at downtown shops, and seven bands rocking every corner of the event, it’s practically impossible to have a bad time. This might be the biggest happening in town, but it’s by no means the only good time: read on for all this weekend’s options.

During the month of August, join a Carson City park ranger to learn about a variety of nature topics related to the outdoors in the area.

All events will be at 10 a.m. at Silver Saddle Ranch, 2648 Carson River Road.

Update: According to NV Energy, the Silver Saddle Ranch downed line was caused by an equipment failure, which caused the line to fall. The Damonte Ranch power outage was caused by a bird. There is still no information about the cause of Wednesday morning's outage.

In recent weeks, power outages and downed lines have consistently popped up more and more throughout Carson City, Lyon County, Reno and Sparks. However, NV Energy said none of the outages are connected.

Summer fun is heating up! Let the kids burn off some energy at the Kids Triathlon at Mills Park. You’ll find all the colors of the rainbow, plus great music and fun times, at the Festival of Unity and Community: Sassabration. Get your grub on at the annual Nevada Honor Flight Chili Cook-off at Glen Eagles, and make sure to check out the craft vendors. A power outage Thursday is affecting NV Energy area customers in the Buzzys Ranch Road area in East Carson City and may be tied to downed power lines from a fire earlier near the Silver Saddle Ranch.

The utility is reporting at least 181 customers are without power in the Buzzys Ranch Road area and in the Carson River Road area.

NV Energy says power should be restored by 6:30 p.m.

Carson City Fire Department was called Thursday afternoon to the area near Silver Saddle Ranch off of Carson River Road for a reported brush fire.
