First day of Autumn: Fall in for events around Carson City Saturday, Sept. 22

Mother Nature and Father Time often don't agree here in Northern Nevada. While the calendar marks today as the official start to Fall, the weather still feels like summer.

Enjoy summer's stubborn hold on the region this weekend around Mills Park, where the second annual Carson City Community Garage Sale takes place at the Carson City Community Center. Or, stop by the Carson City Aquatic Facility for the annual CASI Pooch Plunge Pool Party fundraiser.

Check out some indoor activities, too, with free admission to the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada and Smithsonian Museum Day at the Nevada State Museum.

Pre-service foster parent training Sept. 21-23 in Fallon. 8 a.m. In rural Nevada, many teens and children need a safe, temporary living situation, so Nevada Division of Child and Family Services (DCFS) is inviting the community to learn about becoming a foster caregiver by attending pre-service foster parent training, Friday, Sept. 21 through Sunday, Sept. 23 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Banner Churchill Community Hospital, Lake and Tahoe Rooms, 801 E. Williams Avenue in Fallon. The training is open to the public, though registration is required. — CASI Pooch Plunge Pool Party fundraiser at the Carson City Aquatic Facility, 841 N. Roop Street in Carson City. Small dogs and three-legged canines from 9-10 a.m. Pool is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for dogs of all sizes. Cost is $10 for the first dog, and $6 for each additional. — Comstock Water History Tour at Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Join a park ranger on a guided tour through the backcountry of Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park. Please be prepared for a day of driving through the backcountry, and some short hikes as we stop along the way.

— Second annual Skate and Scooter Competition at Mills Park Skate Park, hosted by The Wheel House, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Freestyle competition where participants will receive three 40 second runs to put together their best lines and biggest tricks. After each run, participants will be judged by experienced skating pros from the Wheelhouse and the winner of each category will receive a prize! Categories are divided by beginner, intermediate, and advanced for skateboarding and scootering. Cost $7, Best Trick Competition $3.

— Tahoe Forest Stewardship Day Fall: Volunteers of all ages and skill levels are invited to this fun, hands-on restoration day to help improve watershed habitats around Lake Tahoe. What to wear and bring: sturdy boots, clothes that are comfortable and can get dirty and sunglasses. Bring a reusable water bottle and leather work gloves if you have them. Functional Funky Teapots with Rich McGregor, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Carson City Art Gallery and Pottery, 110 South Curry Street. Learn to transform slabs of clay into sculptural functional teapots. The class runs Saturdays for four weeks beginning Sept. 8 through Sept. 29.

— Guided book walk at Davis Creek Park day use area, 25 Davis Cree Road in Washoe Valley. Family-friendly 0.7-mile walk starts at 11 a.m. and follows a book written by local fourth-graders.

— Family Health and Safety Fair, 1-4 p.m. in Center Court of Meadowood Mall and outside in the parking lot next to JC Penney, Reno.

— Fall Exhibition and Art Reception with Shaun Griffin, Pedro Gomez and Artisan Gallery artists, 1-4 p.m. at St. Mary's Art Center, 55 N. R Street in Virginia City.

— The Wind Calls includes work by Mahedi Anjuman, Nicki Bracco, Mark Combs, Teal Francis, Hannah Huntley, Gwaylon Leaf, Frances Melhop, Ally Messer, and Carla Miller. The artists used a wide variety of art media including mixed media, ceramics, sculpture, painting, printmaking, and photography to make their art and comments on contemporary life and society.

— The Capital City Arts Initiative, also known as CCAI, presents its exhibition, "Jenny Raven: The Creative Growth Years 1979 - 1984" with artwork by artist Jenny Raven in the city’s Community Center Sierra Room, 851 E William Street, Carson City. The exhibition is available to the public through October 18, 2018. The Sierra Room is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

On Saturday, April 20, Carson City Community Gardeners and the UNR Extension Master Gardeners came together to get the Community Garden ready for the growing season. For two hours they removed weeds, spread mulch and prepped their garden beds for the season.

In collaboration with Chartwells, the Carson City School District foodservice partner, Culinary Arts students from Ms. Tammy Borreman’s class at Carson Middle School competed in a “Discovery Kitchen Cook Off.” Similar to a mini version of the Food Network’s Iron Chef, the timed cooking competition featured teams of three students who prepared succulent dishes for a judging panel.

Carson City Fire Department and multiple agencies will host Tuesday the 2nd annual wildfire education and preparedness workshop for the community Tuesday, April 30.

Carson City is a Bee City USA affiliate, the first in the state of Nevada. Bee Cities are a part of The Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation. "Bee City USA’s mission is to galvanize communities to sustain pollinators by providing them with healthy habitat, rich in a variety of native plants and free to nearly free of pesticides.”

Six local bowlers were inducted in the third class of the Carson Country Bowling Association Hall of Fame at their annual meeting on Saturday, April 27, at HomeGrown Bowl. Carson Country is the local association of the U.S. Bowling Congress.

Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space will hold a "Sheep Talk" this Monday, April 29 from noon to 1 p.m. so residents can learn from Carson City staff about the popular fuel reduction program used annually with the use of "firefighting" sheep.

Camp GOTR (Girls on the Run) is coming to Carson City for the second year in a row! Camp GOTR will be a week-long, half-day summer camp from 8 AM- 12 PM at the Carson City Community Center the week of August 5th- August 9th.

Girls on the Run Sierras is a character-building program for girls in 3rd through 8th grade operating in the Reno-Tahoe area.

Approximately 3 years old, they were abandoned when their owner moved, leaving them to fend for themselves on the streets of Reno. It wasn’t easy.
