The Carson City School District is pleased to announce new leadership roles for the School Board of Trustees. At their first meeting of the year Tuesday, Jan. 11, Joe Cacioppo, District 7, was named the newest president of the Carson City School District Board of Trustees.

It was an eventful year around the Carson City region notwithstanding the limitations caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Here's some notable stories that were not pandemic related that happened in 2020.

A multi-agency law enforcement investigation led authorities to approximately 446 grams of methamphetamine, multiple stolen firearms and other stolen property after a search warrant was executed at a Dayton residence earlier this month, according to the Nevada Department of Public Safety.

Nevada Department of Public Safety Director George Togliatti has appointed Thomas Lawson as Chief of the Nevada DPS, Parole and Probation Division. The appointment is effective Monday, Nov. 16, 2020.

CARSON CITY — Nevada Department of Public Safety Director George Togliatti has appointed David Fogerson as Administrator of the DPS, Division of Emergency Management. Fogerson’s appointment is effective Wednesday, October 28, 2020.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Department of Public Safety, State Fire Marshal Division is investigating the cause of a structure fire Monday in Churchill County where 2 people died and 1 person is in critical condition.

The Carson City School District is pleased to announce Mr. Adrian Manzano, a third grade student at Empire Elementary School, as a winner of the State Fire Prevention and Awareness Poster Contest for his age category.

CARSON CITY — Nevada Department of Public Safety Director George Togliatti has appointed Anne Carpenter as Colonel of the Nevada DPS, Highway Patrol Division. Colonel Carpenter officially takes command of the Nevada Highway Patrol on Monday, October 19, 2020. She will oversee 491 sworn officers and 96 non-sworn personnel.

The Nevada Highway Patrol Northern Command West has received a grant in the amount of $115,000 from the Nevada Department of Public Safety, Office of Traffic Safety to support law enforcement’s participation in the Joining Forces traffic safety campaigns during the coming year.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office has received a $43,000 grant from the Nevada Department of Public Safety, Office of Traffic Safety to support the Sheriff’s Office participation in Joining Forces traffic safety campaigns during the coming year.

On September 14, 2020, the Nevada Department of Public Safety (DPS), Division of Investigations (NDI) Tri-NET Narcotic Task Force conducted an operation with partnering local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies.

The Nevada Department of Public Safety (DPS), State Fire Marshal Division, has selected the fourth annual State of Nevada Fire Prevention Week Poster Contest winners.

CARSON CITY — Fire Prevention Week 2020 is October 4-10. The Nevada Department of Public Safety, State Fire Marshal Division, is proud and excited to hold its 4th annual poster contest. Winners of four categories will have their artwork featured on billboards statewide.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region. The 2020 Jazz & Beyond Music and Art Festival will include the second annual Carson City Open Studios Tour with multiple locations. Hosted by the Carson City Classic Cinema Club, the Brewery Arts Center is holding a drive-in movie showing of the 1950s classic “Shane” on Saturday. CARSON CITY — The Nevada Department of Public Safety will hold a one-day hiring event in Carson City on Saturday, August 22, 2020.

From August 10 through August 21, 2020, Carson City Sheriff's Office and law enforcement agencies statewide will be Joining Forces to heighten enforcement of the state’s pedestrian safety laws through the dedication of extra traffic patrol deputies.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Department of Public Safety Director George Togliatti appointed Mike Dzyak as Chief of the Nevada DPS, State Fire Marshal Division on July 27, 2020. Dzyak previously served as Lieutenant and as Acting Fire Marshal following the retirement of former Chief Bart Chambers.

CARSON CITY — Nevada Department of Public Safety Director George Togliatti appointed John Letos as Chief of the DPS Capitol Police Division. Chief Letos began his official command on July 15, 2020, and succeeds Dale W. Liebherr, who recently retired.

Then, without warning, the horrific death of George Floyd reignited the unresolved wounds of racism, police use of force, and unequal treatment of minorities in this country. The frustrated public demanded answers, change, and resolution, not later but now.

The Nevada Department of Public Safety commissioned the state's newest peace officers Wednesday at the Academy 88 graduation ceremony. The event was held in Carson City at the Legislative Plaza — Capitol Amphitheater, with limited guests in accordance with COVID-19 public health and safety guidelines.

A 24-year-old Carson City man was arrested at Mills Park Monday evening after allegedly kidnapping a child and attempting to sexually assault them, among other crimes.

According to the report, Kahlil Deshawn Williams was arrested after deputies were dispatched to a convenience store on Hot Springs Road for a kidnapping.

CARSON CITY, Nev. — UPS announced the donation of 10,000 N95 respirator masks to the Nevada Department of Public Safety. UPS has procured a sufficient supply to meet internal needs for its employees, and is sharing its available masks to help protect healthcare providers and first responders in communities across the country.

On Thursday, April 2, 2020, the previously planned Carson City Board of Supervisor's meeting will continue as scheduled; however, during the mandated shut down, how the meeting will be held has been altered to suit the social distancing needed to keep all community members safe.

Jerome Tushbant and Jim Primka were promoted to Undersheriff and Assistant Sheriff, respectively, during a swearing in ceremony held at the Carson City Sheriff’s Office on Friday afternoon.

PK O’Neill filed late Friday afternoon with the Secretary of State’s Office as a Republican candidate for State Assembly District 40. The District includes all of Carson City, the east side of Washoe Valley and parts of southeast Washoe County.

At the first school board meeting of the year Tuesday, Jan. 14, Mike Walker was named the newest president of the Carson City School District Board of Trustees. He replaced former President Stacie Wilke-McCulloch, as the school board’s leader.

Lyon County District Attorney, Stephen B. Rye, announced Tuesday that the Third Judicial District Court sentenced James Parisi, 39 years of age, of Dayton, Nev., to the maximum sentence of 20 years in the Nevada State Prison with parole eligibility after seven years on one count of duty to stop at the scene of an accident causing death.
