Five days remain in the Carson City Library Summer Reading Challenge, and there are plenty of virtual activities for kids of all ages. The reading challenge officially ends on Friday, July 31. To finish the final week, the library is hosting a series of exciting events capped-off by a grand prize giveaway.

In partnership with Envirolution, a nonprofit organization dedicated to inspiring and empowering the next generation of leaders and workers to drive the growth of a sustainable economy, students in the Carson City School District will have the opportunity to charge their minds and connect career options by exploring STEM and sustainability programs with local businesses, including Tesla.

Heading into the last day of the month, July 31, 2019 and we should note it has been a pretty good summer so far weather wise, without much in the way of extreme heat. But as they say here in the Silver State, wait 15 minutes and it is bound to change. On tap Wednesday, there's a preserving family history workshop hosted by the Nevada State Library and Archives, art showings, Wheeled Food Wednesday at the Brewery Arts Center and more. Enjoy.

Attention family historians and genealogists: The Nevada State Archives is holding a “Preserving Family History” workshop on July 31, 2019 from 9 a.m. to noon. This will be a basic family photo and document preservation workshop that will include a few hands-on activities.

Headed into Saturday, April 27, 2019 we're looking at another picture-perfect spring weather day and cool overnight temperatures. There's lots of activities ahead, including a colorful fun run at Mills Park, a free paper and document recycling event hosted by Debug Computer, a prescription drug roundup, the Silver State's own celebration of the Aloha State, a Carson High School speech team fundraiser at Flavors of India, art showings and sales and a fundraiser at Flat Earth Pizza for a wonderful Carson City woman who is in the throes of cancer. CARSON CITY — Museums from around the state will converge on the Nevada State Museum in Carson City on Tuesday, March 19 for the 2019 Nevada Museum Showcase.

Carson City has made the Top 25 in voting to be considered for the Levitt AMP Award, matching grant funds provided by the Mortimer and Mimi Levitt Foundation that help bring free, family-friendly outdoor concerts to communities nationwide.

CARSON CITY — Kids and teens ages 10-14 in Carson City will join more than 150,000 children across the country in leading the 11th annual 4-H National Youth Science Day challenge throughout the month of October. This year’s challenge, Code Your World, teaches young people computer science skills through four engaging hands-on activities.

The Nevada State Museum and the Carson Doll Club are teaming up with exhibits and hands-on activities for all ages in celebration of World Doll Day. That includes an area where you can have your photo taken with a giant doll.

Nevada agencies and organizations have worked hard to spread awareness of archaeological and historic preservation efforts throughout the Silver State, encouraging both residents and visitors to explore and learn about Nevada’s significant archaeological and historical treasures.

This Wednesday, join our students and community. Come out and enjoy a night of hands-on fun. Make a paper airplane, a gumdrop and toothpick bridge, build with LEGOS and use robotic arms.

The need and value of a career in building trades is a bit clearer for the twelve Pioneer High School students.

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension presents a free Safety Day event for children and their families. The event, held in partnership with local businesses, organizations and agencies, is 8 a.m.-noon, Saturday, Sept. 9, at Mills Park, 111 E. William St. in Carson City.

What a day we have in store. Sure, it’s off to school for the kids in Carson City, but this will be a day to remember for another reason, the solar eclipse. A huge swath of our country will see a total solar eclipse, but here in Carson City, only 81 percent of totality will be achieved. That means there is NO time that you can look at the sun without risking injury. I repeat: do NOT look directly at the sun. The Jazz and Beyond Music Festival bids farewell to another year with a free concert in McFadden Plaza featuring the talented members of the Mile High Jazz Band.

UPDATE SUNDAY, AUG. 20: For Monday's eclipse program, the Carson City Library is taking walk ins, however they will not be guaranteed eclipse safety glasses. The library will have other activities available and a telescope with a solar filter.
