The Carson City School District is pleased to announce Empire Elementary School, a designated Governor’s STEM School, has received 550 Thermometer Watches from local Scientist Ron Newton. The wearable technology, costing less than $10, is designed to monitor the temperature of the wearer and indicate if they are running a fever.

Al Roker of NBC’s "Today Show" fame will discuss his passion, interest and concerns about climate change, as well as his storied career as keynote speaker at Operation Sierra Storm, the annual television meteorologists’ conference at Lake Tahoe. INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — It’s a banner year for Bald Eagles in Lake Tahoe. The Tahoe Institute of Natural Science reports that a record number of 42 Bald Eagles were spotted during its annual survey. The previous high was 27 set in 2017.

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. — Spooner Lake is one of Nevada’s most popular places to hike, mountain bike, ride horses or simply enjoy nature, and welcomes more than 150,000 visitors every year. On Thursday, the Nevada Division of State Parks is pleased to launch the bidding process for the park’s much-anticipated Spooner Lake Improvement Project, which involves a complete redesign and update of the facilities, including construction of a visitor center and amphitheater.

With these designations, southern Nevadans are facing a mild and dry winter and northern Nevadans are looking at an uncertain forecast. All could face water restrictions, crop or pasture loss and, with exceptional drought, water shortage emergencies.

Carson City Health and Human Services announced last week that vaccinations would be moving into Tier 2 beginning on Monday, Jan. 11 starting with educators and daycare providers.

The topic of his presentation will be “Rebuilding Rural America” — a set of policy proposals he developed based on a lifetime in public life and on his own experience as a product of rural America, having been born and raised on a farm in North Dakota.

Carolyn Lee Davis passed away November 19, 2020, aged 73. She was a long-time resident of Carson City, where she moved after receiving her Bachelor of Science in Anthropology at Western Oregon University at the age of 53.

Science has always been a passion of mine, partly because I flunked science in high school and have never understood why. But I stumbled upon a gemstone of science the other day that would make the most lettered academic in the world smile.

Winter session classes at Western Nevada College are filling up fast so don’t wait to register for the 5-week short-term classes that start on Dec. 21 and the 3-week courses that begin on Jan. 4.

On Friday, the Greenhouse Project held a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new outdoor classroom which will be used to host both students from Carson High School as well as community classes on gardening and agriculture.
