Just about everywhere you go, you’ll be treated to something to soothe the soul or get the toes tapping. Get the kids up early for the Young Eagle Flights at the Carson City Airport – they’re free, but you need to be on time for registration. The Jazz and Beyond festival committee announced Thursday the winner of the 2017 poster and program cover art contest is William Smith, a member of the Nevada Artists Association.

Family events are the highlight of Mother's Day weekend in Carson City as the Nevada state capital adds motherhood to its continuing celebration of spring.

This weekend is for all of the moms out there, and the dads that are also moms, and the women who hold a special place of honor in our hearts. Scoop the family up and find something to enjoy together. The annual RSVP Spring Carnival is an easy choice, but a round-trip to Virginia City on the historic V and T Steam Train is pretty memorable. Find something pretty for her garden at the Spring Plant Sale that the Greenhouse Project hosts each year. SATURDAY:

The annual spring breakfast and open house at Silver Saddle Ranch is this Saturday. The public is invited. A birdwalk starts the day at 7 a.m., breakfast is served at 9.

Sweethearts of the Sierra will provide music and trails will be open. Muscle Powered will be biking many of the trails and it is a great opportunity to visit the historic Red House.

Happy Tuesday, Carson City. The valley is abuzz in blooming flowers and happenings. Tag along with one of the guided planned walks today; the afternoon one will prove more challenging, but perfect for getting ready for summer. The Carson City Classic Cinema Club showcases a different film each month: catch Bette Davis in ‘Of Human Bondage’ tonight at the BAC’s Performance Hall. Holy moly, it’s going to be a busy weekend: busy and gorgeous out. A bowling tournament and the Comstock Shootout Soccer tournament have the hotels and motels busting at the seams. Celebrate Earth Day with Muscle Powered by making a small piece of Carson City that much cleaner; the trash meets at 8 a.m. and leaves you plenty of time to enjoy the day. Carson City is smoking hot when it comes to great things to do today. Capital City Farm Days takes over Fuji Park with information and presentations for area schoolkids. The Youth Strings Program is ready to dazzle you their Spring Fling Concert tonight at the Community Center. THURSDAY:

Meet near the barns on Silver Saddle Ranch off of Carson River Road. Closed-toed shoes and water are required. Bring water, a friend and/or friendly dogs. Hats, sunscreen and walking sticks recommended.

Muscle Powered Easy Hike program are hikes of between 2 to 4 miles in length, often with some elevation gain (no more than 500') and can be on a paved path, smooth wide trail, or single track. The hikes will usually be of approximately 1 1/2 duration.

Mile High Jazz Band Association and Carson City will present the 14th Annual Jazz and Beyond Festival, featuring 18 days of music, art and film at multiple venues in the capital city, Aug. 4-21.

Due to recent storms and flood events, several parks, trails and open spaces throughout Carson City have sustained more than $2,000,000 in damage, according to city officials.

Carson City Public Works crews are mitigating flood prone areas Tuesday and will address concerns accordingly. The storm drain system is operating at capacity, resulting in water in roadways and localized intersection flooding. When the storm drains are at maximum capacity water can be observed flowing outwardly.

This is a normal response. All personnel are at their full ability assisting citizens.

I hope you got your fill of naps last weekend because this weekend is chock full of fun to be had for all. You can Wine Walk until you Holiday Crawl downtown. Take your pick of craft shows in town. Kids won’t want to miss the Santa Train at the State Railroad Museum or one of the two performances of ‘The Peanutcracker’ at the Community Center. Whether you’d like to spend the days indoors or out, there is something for all ages in the Carson City area this weekend.

The annual Christmas Open House is this Saturday at Silver Saddle Ranch. The historic Red House will be the gathering point for activities. Hike the ranch or join Muscle-Powered members biking the trails.

Sometimes you just want to make some noise. The brand-new Harmony Sculpture Park at the Brewery Arts Center is the perfect place to make some music: the ribbon cutting is at 1 p.m. The new FoodMax will open in early December and jobs are still available: the job fair at Job Connect will put you in the running. Let Firehouse Subs take care of dinner tonight, and do something for our local Relay for Life in the process. We are in for some wet weather over the next few days, so please slow down and watch for slick roads.

UPDATE 7:14PM: The Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center (SFIDC) is now reporting the Little Valley to be 55 percent contained, having burned 3,400 acres and destroyed 22 homes and 17 outbuildings since early Friday morning.
More than 660 firefighting personnel remain on scene, the SFIDC reports.
More rain is forecast Sunday night into Monday morning, which should further help firefighting efforts to achieve full containment of the Little Valley Fire.

UPDATE 3:52PM: From South Lake Tahoe, Highway 89 continues to be closed from just beyond the Spring Creek Tract to the Vikingsholm parking lot gate (north side of Emerald Bay) because of the Emerald Fire, which is still 90 percent contained.
As of 3 p.m. Sunday, evacuations have been lifted for Cathedral Road, Springs Creek Tract, Camp Shelly, Camp Concord and Mount Tallac Road.
Cascade Lake and Cascade Properties are currently open to residents only.
In Washoe Valley, Franktown Road continues to be closed below the 6190 street address, because of the Little Valley Fire, which remains at 20 percent contained.
Although Old U.S. Highway 395A has been opened, Washoe County Sheriff's Office (WCSO) is asking the public to stay out of the area due to fire traffic, localized flooding from heavy rains and unstable ground from the burn areas.
Interstate 580 is open in both directions to traffic.
Public safety officials said at a 1 p.m. briefing that a re-entry plan has been established, but it will require coordination with fire management personnel, law enforcement, and utility companies before the area can be re-populated safely.
The re-entry plan called for some residents to be allowed back in Monday or Tuesday to survey their properities only. Officials are hopeful re-entry can begin Wednesday.
WCSO will contact displaced residents directly in order to visit their homes.
Fuji Park in Carson City remain open for evacuated residents with large livestock.

The annual Carson River cleanup event is scheduled for this Saturday, Sept. 17, from 8 am until noon. Volunteers should check in at the Silver Saddle Ranch by 8 a.m. and bring a hat, sunblock, gloves, long sleeve pants and shirts.

Bring something for the ducks if you join in the Easy Walk at Ross Gold Park. Five years ago, our community suffered a great shock when four people, including three National Guardsmen, were the victims of a shooting attack at IHOP. The annual remembrance run begins at 7 a.m., so please be cautious when driving along Fairview this morning.

The Cooperative Extension and 4-H Office held its first ever Youth Summer Day Camp. Lindsay Chichester, Extension Educator says, “We have actively been working on creating awareness about 4-H and Extension, and what we can provide to both youth and adults in our community.

Conditions were ideal for an outdoor concert in the country Sunday afternoon. With highs in the eighties, the dog days of August seemed tame compared with seasons past.
