Pooches, pin ups, produce and more: events for Carson City on Saturday, September 21

Good morning Carson City and happy Saturday! We’ve got a bunch of great events going on today including Rockabilly Riot day three, the annual Pooch Plunge, and much more!

Saturday, September 21

— Ghost tours, show-n-shine, chili cook-off and more featured at 2019 Dayton Valley Days (all day). The 31st annual Dayton Valley Days kicks off this weekend with a street festival, food booths, plenty of games for kids, a host of family entertainment options including gold panning, ghost tours, a vehicle show and shine, chili cook-off, Sunday pet parade and more. With the theme "The Haunting of Dayton Valley," there's a number of ghost tour events Saturday planned at the Dayton Community Center. — 100 mile Endurance Horse Race in Virginia City. 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 86 South C Street.
The race consists of three loops (51, 25 and 24 miles), each returning to base camp in Virginia City. The trail covers hardpack and rocky terrain on historical wagon (now jeep) roads with some sandy single track footing and several mountain climbs. There is also pavement through town and across highways. Elevations range between 5000 and 7800 feet. Each loop is marked with a different color of ribbon, along with chalk and glow sticks (after dark).

— Carson City Kiwanis hosts pancreatic cancer awareness run, golf tourney and bench press. 7 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Silver Oak Golf Course. Each September for the past five years, Carson City Kiwanis has been making it their duty to fundraise and bring awareness to pancreatic cancer. This year, to that end, they’ll be hosting the 6th annual Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Day event on Saturday, Sept. 21. The fundraiser will offer three events to further the cause: a golf tournament hosted by the Silver Oak Golf Course, a pancreatic cancer walk/run, and a bench press championship competition.

— Tahoe Forest Stewardship Day. 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Upper Truckee River at Johnson Meadow. Volunteers of all ages and skill levels are invited to this fun, hands-on restoration day. By pitching in, you are improving the watershed habitats that surround Lake Tahoe. Healthy forests and meadows act as natural pollution filters to Keep Tahoe Blue.

— Carson City Farmers Market returns this Saturday. 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the corner of 3rd and Curry St. in Carson City. Enjoy fresh-picked produce, local meats, fresh flowers, artisan baked goods, jams, honey, crafts, live music and Carson City’s smiling faces.This week at the market you can enjoy music by Ricky D., stop by the kids' booth to make your own market bag, we have all the supplies for you. We are excited to see you all again this year.

— Smithsonian Magazine Museum Day. 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Nevada State Museum. Free admission with Smithsonian Magazine Museum Day Ticket. Get ticket after Aug. 15th online. There will be behind the scenes tours and a special display.

— Wounded Warrior Golf Tournament. 9 a.m. at the Carson Valley Golf Course. A shotgun start will begin at 9 a.m. $75 per person, all profits benefit the Wounded Warrior Project.

— 4-H fundraiser and homemade Dog Biscuit Bake Sale at Bensons Feed. 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at 2750 Highway 50 East. The 4 Paws Dog Club of Carson City will be selling homemade dog biscuits in various sizes on Saturday, September 21, from 9:00 to noon, at Benson’s Feed, 2750 Highway 50 East. All proceeds from the bake sale will support this outstanding youth club.

— Walker River State Recreation Area birthday bash. 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Celebrate the one year anniversary of the Walker River State Recreation Area grand opening with a day full of fun, games, and educational activities. The staff at Walker River would like to thank everyone who has come out to the park this past year and look forward to many great years to come! The Nevada Division of State Lands accepted the gift deeds facilitated by the Walker Basin Conservancy, and assigned the donated property to the Nevada Division of State Parks to develop and manage the new park along the East Walker River in Lyon and Mineral counties.

— Pooch Plunge returns to Carson City. 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Carson City Aquatic Facility, 841 N. Roop Street. Carson City Aquatic Facility will hold its annual Pooch Plunge pool party this Saturday to help support Critter Fixer, Carson Animal Services Initiative’s low cost spay and neuter voucher program. The schedule for the annual event is 9 to 10 a.m. for little dogs and three legged friends who need a calmer crowd.

— Nevada State Parks hosts Tahoe Rim Trail hike to Sand Harbor Overlook. 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Spooner Lake State Park. Join a Park Ranger for a guided hike to the famous Sand Harbor Overlook on the Tahoe Rim Trail. The hike is a four-mile loop and offers breathtaking views of Sand Harbor. The hike is moderately difficult, and you’ll need to bring water, lunch, sunscreen and sturdy hiking boots.

— Train to Virginia City from Carson City. Event takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 4650 Eastgate Siding Road. Prices for the ride range from $25-$55. Rediscover Nevada’s rich history in mining and mill on the V&T Carson City-Virginia City route as you meander through tunnels, canyons and mining towns aboard a restored 1914 Pullman coach led by a 1916 Baldwin 2-8-0 steam locomotive. This relaxing all-day train excursion is fully narrated with historical facts and anecdotes. — Carson City Historical Society to host Heritage Festival. 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Foreman-Roberts House Museum, 1207 N. Carson Street. Carson City Historical Society will present a Heritage Festival to celebrate the 50th year of the Society. The event will be held at the Foreman-Roberts House Museum Park, 1207 N. Carson St. from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, September 21, 2019. This is a free event. Foreman-Roberts House Museum will be open to tour, and the Carriage House will be open with new displays.

— Rockabilly Riot returns to Carson City. 12 to 9 p.m. at Mills Park, 1111 E. William Street. Hot rods, rat rods, souped up trucks and the men and women who made them will be making their way into the capital city this week for the annual Rockabilly Riot which begins Thursday and runs through Saturday at Mills Park. The vehicle spectacle, now in its 9th year in northern Nevada and fourth consecutive year in Carson City, isn't to be missed as some of the most inventive, intriguing, hot rods and classic cars will be on display at the park, with a number of events planned. This is a free event and is open to the public, all three days, Thursday through Saturday, Sept. 19-21.

— Guided tours of the Nevada State Capitol. Two separate tours will take place at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. every Saturday in Carson City. Tours typically take an hour and include both the exterior of the building, nearby memorials as well as the interior of the building. Tours are available for up to 20 people on a first-come, first-served basis. The building includes numerous historic artifacts that range from portraits of past Nevada governors to sculptures to historical items showcased during Nevada’s Sesquicentennial celebration. The Capitol remains open to the public Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Guided tours of up to 20 people can be arranged in advance by calling the Nevada State Museum’s Education Program at 775-687-4810, ext. 237.

— Chambered for Charity Sporting Clays event in Carson City. Chambered for Charity, an unincorporated non-profit, invites community members to sign up for the first Aim to Cure Sporting Clays Shoot on Sept. 21, 2019 at the Capitol City Gun Club in Carson City, Nev. Chambered for Charity was formed by the women of two local Reno companies, Legacy Sports International and Reno Cerakote. Their mission is “to enhance the lives of others through charitable donations while promoting the safe, responsible use of firearms.”

— Coin Press demonstrations at the Nevada State Museum. 12 to 4 p.m. at 600 N. Carson Street. Visitors to the Nevada State Museum can watch the museum’s historic Coin Press No. 1 carry on a mission it started nearly 150 years ago in the very same building. The venerable press which churned out millions of dollars in silver and gold coins during stints at U.S. Mints in Carson City, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Denver between 1870 and 1964. The press demonstrations will take place the last Friday of the month with two-person teams of volunteers not only working the press but sharing its history with museum visitors.

— Saturday Beginning Wheel Throwing at Ogres-Holm Pottery. 1 to 4 p.m. at 1215 S. Carson St. in Carson City. The Ogres of Ogres-Holm introduce you to clay in this 6-week open start class, including open studio time, is designed to get you started. It’s a great way to relax on a Saturday afternoon. $175 for 6 week session or $45 drop ins.

— Monarch butterfly conservation workshop. 1 to 4:30 p.m. at River Fork Ranch Preserve. Learn how to start your own monarch butterfly waystation, and take home some free native plants! Join The Nature Conservancy, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Nevada Division of Forestry on Saturday, September 21 from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the River Fork Ranch Preserve, 381 Genoa Lane, Minden, NV 89423.

— History walks, talks featured at Geona's Mormon Station State Historic Park. 1:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. Join a park ranger for a talk on the early settlement and development of Mormon Station, and what life was like for the early settlers that called this place home. This talk will focus on the 1850’s, and discuss how Mormon Station grew from a remote trading station to a bustling community over the span of a few years.

— Lego Club at the Carson City Library . 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at 900 N. Roop Street. Build self-led creations through hands-on learning with LEGO Education materials. Participants 9 and under must be accompanied by a caregiver of at least 13 years of age at all times.

— Books and Brew Book Club at the Carson Nugget. 4:30 to 6 p.m. Are you a coffee-drinking book lover? Looking for a way to make new friends? Then join us for a book discussion over food and drinks! We will be meeting in the Barrel Room of Alatte Coffee and Wine Bar to discuss this month’s book choice.

— Carson City Ghost Walk returns this Saturday. 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Bob McFadden Plaza. For the 27th year, the spookiest historical tour of the capital city is returning this Saturday, June 1 with the Carson City Ghost Walk. The Carson City Ghost Walk is a seasonal historical tour of Carson City’s west side, a walking history lesson with a touch of the supernatural. Some of the stops on the tour include the Bliss Mansion, the Ferris Mansion, the Governor’s Mansion, and the Rinckel Mansion.

— Live music at Glen Eagles Restaurant. 6:30 to 9 p.m. at 3700 N. Carson St. Enjoy live music that is sure to make you get up and dance every Wednesday-Saturday starting at 6:30-9:00ish.

— Paranormal Investigation and Campout. 7 to 11 p.m. at Mormon Station Park. Join local volunteers for a real paranormal investigation of Mormon Station using professional equipment! Participants must be at least 15 years old and accompanied by a guardian if under 18. Participants who would like to camp in the Mormon Station stockade after the investigation are welcome to do so. The park has a limited number of tents that may be borrowed, or participants may bring their own.

— Carson Valley Community Center presents 'Moon Over Buffalo'. 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the CVIC Hall in Minden. Set in Buffalo, New York in 1955, it is a comedic farce about two run down actors, attempting to revive their repertory company while dreaming of their lost careers in Hollywood. Don’t miss this hilarious comedy, with local actors and many behind the scenes volunteers.

— Carson Comedy Club at the Carson Nugget. 8 to 9 p.m. at 507 N. Carson Street. Live Comedy every Friday and Saturday night at the Carson Nugget! Doors open at 7:15 p.m. Purchase tickets at the Winner's Club or online.

Sunday, September 22

— Muscle Powered morning bicycle ride. 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Fremont Elementary School. Meet at Fremont Elementary School in the South parking lot next to the Linear Ditch Trail. Typically, this ride consists of two 10-15 minute loops with varying pace depending on rider level. This is a “no drop” ride so no one will be left behind. All riders must have a bicycle in safe working condition, a helmet, and closed toed shoes. — Nevada Raider Nation: Carson City Chapter Game Watch. 10 a.m. at Jimmy G’s, 301 N. Carson Street. Carson City Chapter will host an Oakland Raiders vs Minnesota Vikings game watch at 10 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 22, at Jimmy G's, 301 N. Carson St. New fans are welcome to join and sit (and scream) during the action of the game. Membership is just $20 per person. Jimmy G's will offer drink specials during the game; those attending are welcome to bring a breakfast item to share, or donate to the cause.

— Chautauqua of Hiram D. Scott at Dangberg Historic Park. 10 a.m. at Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park. The final Chautauqua of the 2019 Festival season will portray Hiram D. Scott, Alpine County, California pioneer, on Sunday, September 22, at 10:00 am. Hiram Daniel Scott was a ship builder from Pittston, Maine by trade. Initially he settled in Santa Cruz, California in 1847, then followed the Gold Rush when gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill. There he operated a ferry business across the San Joaquin River.
