Fallen Nevada law officer memorial this week at Capitol, parade in Virginia City

In conjunction with National Police Week, Thursday, May 2, the 16th Annual Nevada Law Enforcement Officers Memorial ceremony will be held on the Capitol grounds in Carson City beginning at noon. The service will honor the 123 Nevada Peace Officers that have been killed in the line of duty since 1861. In 1998, the memorial was dedicated on the Capitol grounds to recognize the ultimate sacrifice these officers made in service of their communities.

The Carson Memories contest asked participants to submit their favorite photos demonstrating something special or distinct about the Carson City area.
The winning photos, along with the other select photos, are being incorporated into an exhibit created by Gardnerville artist, Beverly Caputo. The exhibit is featured next to a recently finished mural painted by Caputo. The mural depicts key people, places and things of historical relevance to Carson City.
'Always Lost: A Meditation on War' exhibit honored at Nevada Legislature

North Lake Tahoe SnowFest first 10 days in March

SnowFest is scheduled for March 1-10 and will be held at a variety of venues throughout North Lake Tahoe.
In its 32nd year, SnowFest, presented by the North Lake Tahoe Chamber/CVB/ Resort Association, is expected to draw thousands of attendees, with the majority of events free to spectators.

Carson City shows its holiday best at Snowflake Festival of Lights

Perched on the State Capital steps, some 300 voices of the Carson City 5th Grade Singing Ensemble sang Christmas carols to a crowd of hundreds (if not thousands) of parents, siblings, dignitaries, retirees, state workers and locals who swelled onto Carson Street in good measure.

Holiday cheer at two-day Carson City Silver and Snowflake Festival of Lights

The enhanced event is tonight, Friday, Dec. 7, from 5:30-8:00 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 8, from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Ice skating continues until 10 p.m.
Tonight's night's festivities begin on the capitol grounds with the state tree, a bristlecone pine, and downtown Carson City being lit along with a procession including Santa, Mrs. Claus and the 300 voices of the Carson City 5th Grade Music Students Singing Ensemble.

Gov. Sandoval to Join Korean War Veteran in Virginia City Parade

Sandoval and Hooks will be among the many entries, usually more than 50, depending on the weather, that will take part in the parade. Several marching bands, including the Carson Middle School band and one from Fernley will perform in the parade.

That two-story cabin was built back in 2003, and from our deck, you have a spectacular, world-class view of the surrounding groves of pine trees and quaking aspen trees plus the nearby and the faraway mountains.

Committee wants greater participation in Nevada Day
Submitted by editor on Thu, 11/01/2012 - 6:47amIn the 74 years since the Nevada Day Parade moved to Carson City, the number of Nevada Day events has multiplied to include contests, parties, carnivals, exhibits and food events. At the same time, the region from which participants come to celebrate in the capital city has diminished.
“It used to be a statewide event,” said Guy Rocha, retired state archivist who continues to stay involved with Nevada history and events. “Now, Nevada Day in Nevada is celebrated principally in Western Nevada.”

The three-hour four mile-long parade features hundreds of colorful floats, high-stepping equestrian units, and spirited marching bands from throughout the state. The traditional 10 a.m. flyover of military aircraft from the Fallon Naval Air Station and Nevada Air Guard will kick-off the parade.

Man alive after reportedly shot in the head
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Sat, 10/27/2012 - 8:26amA man was reportedly found shot in the head this morning at around 8 a.m. in the area of Boyle and Oneida streets on Washoe Tribal land in Carson City.
Authorities are investigating and Washoe Tribal Police have been called to the scene. The wounded man was said to be still alive and Care Flight was responding to the intersection of Boyle and West Washoe streets, which is about two blocks away from Curry Street where Nevada Day parade floats are gathering.

Meanwhile, the Nevada Department of Transportation will be paving their maintenance yard located on Fairview Drive just east of the Carson City Freeway interchange. The outside westbound lane on Fairview Drive will be closed at this location.

There will be lane closures on Carson Street between 8th Street and Musser Street due to maintenance from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. beginning Sunday, Sept. 16, and continuing through Thursday, Sept. 20.
In other areas:
— There will be traffic control on N. Roop Street from Hot Springs Road to Winnie Lane due to the construction of bicycle and pedestrian improvements. Minor delays are possible.

Carson City woman is Cherry Blossom Princess

Nevada's Cherry Blossom princess this year is Carson City native Pierron Tackes, 21, a student at George Washington University and an intern for Sen. Harry Reid working on environmental issues.
