Guest Opinion: On The equality and Fairness of 'Gay' Marriage
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Thu, 03/28/2013 - 10:04amAs our legislators practice their compassion for homosexual marriage in what the unenlightened refer to as 'profaning our historic religious traditions', they will now consider overturning the laws of nature and biology to gratify the countless progressives who claim to be unfairly labeled by their detractors as deviants and/or Feminists. However, in the words of our President, perhaps we should also address the equally important issue of fairness.

The Cub Scouts of Pack 837 were ready to sail the seas with their balsa wood boats for the first annual Raingutter Regatta on Saturday, April 28th, 2012. A Raingutter Regatta is where a Cub Scout blows a boat he made down a “track” which is a rain gutter filled with water. Our Captain (Cubmaster) Debra Gibbons officiated over the heats. Yet, in the end, there were no winners or losers. This was a lesson in sportsmanship, teamwork, and good manners.

What can make the V&T Railway profitable?
Submitted by admin on Wed, 02/15/2012 - 12:27pmThe good news is that the V&T Railway is expected to make a profit of $164,132 on their popular Polar Express event for the coming year.
The bad news is the railway's main runs between Eastgate Siding and Virginia City is projected to lose $108,192, even with an expected $67,250 in donations.
The resulting $56,000 in projected profit is almost enough to pay for the $60,000 shortfall in the previous season's sales tax revenue that pays for the bonds that helped rebuild the historic railway. That is a shortfall that is expected to continue and grow larger.
Learning to ski on the cheap
Submitted by Sam Bauman on Thu, 12/29/2011 - 1:17pmSki resorts have long battled the problem of bringing first-time skiers back to the slopes. All too often the expense seems to drive them away. So the resorts teamed up to offer first-time lessons on the cheap, and most Lake Tahoe mountain resorts are taking part. Here's Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows take on it all.
House GOP should be punsihed for childish antics on payroll tax cut extension
Submitted by admin on Thu, 12/22/2011 - 9:25amEvery parent should recognize the childish antics of House Republicans on the payroll tax cut extension controversy.
When my nine-year-old doesn't want to do something, a familiar pattern emerges.
First comes the outright refusal. "No, I don't want to," she will say. It's almost always the most truthful part of the whole exchange.
When she sees that doesn't work, then she backpedals to find some other reason to support her position. "I can't do it now because I'm doing (something else)."

Column: Occupy Wall Street is a lesson in history
Submitted by Sam Bauman on Wed, 10/12/2011 - 12:35pmI was chatting with a couple of friends Monday about the Occupy Wall Street movement in its unfocused protest about banks and the financial sector and other things.
No specific targets, but they know something is wrong here.
One friend, a firm "independent," dismissed the crowds as "a bunch of purple-haired freaks." The other, a determined conservative who has predicted rioting in 18 months in American cities when the economy collapses as he is sure it is about to, similarly waved off the protests because the crowd was largely young and powerless with no agenda.
Strike it rich in the Shasta Cascade region
Submitted by Don Quilici on Wed, 07/20/2011 - 12:36amBy the Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association
The Shasta Cascade region remains a popular destination for those seeking to strike it rich by gold panning, or to simply try something new.
Many of the towns throughout the region are rich in gold mining and gold-rush era history, many of which have literally stood the test of time.
If you are interested in feeling the “rush” that so many hopefuls experienced, then grab a pan and try your luck in one of the many creeks or rivers.
Bryce Harper looking for a lesson in 'Humble 101'
Submitted by Chris Graham on Tue, 06/07/2011 - 10:22pmFirst, it was saluting his opponent’s dugout as he circled third base after hitting a home run last year in a CSN uniform early in the season. Then, it was tossing his bat up 10 feet in the air as he hit a lazy fly-ball in the post-season tournament later in that season. Now, he's blowing kisses to the pitcher as he crosses home plate after a home run. My question is: When will the overpaid #1 draft pick of 2010 learn to just play the game?

This is the third-best snow season in Heavenly’s history and forecasters are predicting as much as six more feet before this round of storms clears.

Kenny & Me
Submitted by Kirk Caraway on Fri, 07/23/2010 - 6:54amThere are about a million people who know Kenny Guinn better than I do.
But it's that fact that makes the interactions I had with him so interesting.
As a political columnist, I took my fair share of shots at him, on issues like Yucca Mountain and his big tax rebate program. Besides sending his nuke dump point man out to counter my criticisms, he never held those against me.

More Nugget Project nuggets uncovered
Submitted by admin on Sat, 05/01/2010 - 9:47amThe Nevada Appeal has uncovered a few new tidbits about Nugget Project consultant Mark Lewis.
Following the piece I wrote on Lewis this week, the Appeal found a grand jury report dealing with Lewis' big project developments as city manager of Stockton, Calif. The report showed that costs associated with development of the the Stockton ballpark and events center swelled from an estimate of $75 million to more than $120 million, and placed the blame for this on Lewis and the lack of oversight by the city's elected officials.

Submitted by on Sat, 03/27/2010 - 9:41pmEven after surging to a 6-0 lead in the home half of the first inning, the Carson High softball team wasn't ready to relax during the second game of its Sierra League double header against Fallon on Saturday afternoon.
The Senators never let their foot off the gas pedal, tacking on five runs in the third inning and four more runs in the fourth on their way to a 15-1 victory to salvage a split of the twin-bill. Fallon took an early lead and held on for a 4-3 win in the opener.
Carson Now: To profit or not to profit
Submitted by Kirk Caraway on Sun, 03/07/2010 - 10:54amCommunity news belongs to the community.
This is the concept that led me to develop Carson Now, the idea that for a news organization to truly serve the community, it needed to belong to the community.
Part of this idea comes from my experience of being on the front lines as corporate media cutbacks resulted in communities not being well served in terms of news coverage.
So my idea was to create Carson Now as a nonprofit organization, whose mission was limited to serving the community. Nonprofit media organizations are a fairly new development, with sites like Voice of San Diego and MinnPost leading the way.
