CARSON CITY, Nev. — Each passing month gets us closer to golf time! The Silver Oak Senior Men’s Golf Club has officially teed it up for the 2021 golf season. SOSMGC is open to golfers 55 years of age and older and all handicap levels.

It was an eventful year around the Carson City region notwithstanding the limitations caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Here's some notable stories that were not pandemic related that happened in 2020.

Carson High School's NJROTC Drill and Color Guard team competed in their first ever ‘virtual’ drill competition hosted by University of North Carolina ROTC program. The various teams’ performances were captured on video and sent to the University for judging.

On a beautiful Northern Nevada day, werewolves, pirates, escaped prisoners, witches, scuba divers, a Top Gun Tom Cruise look-alike, and other costumed creatures came out in force on Friday, October 30th to play in the Halloween Golf Scramble held at Silver Oak Golf to support the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada and the Carson City Chamber of Commerce.

Heading into the final weekend of October, Halloween and Nevada Day events will keep revelers busy through Sunday making for a jam packed weekend of fun for families and grownups around the Carson City region.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region. The Nevada Day Golf Tournament in remembrance of Mayor Bob Crowell will be held at Silver Oak Ranch Golf Course on Saturday. Dozens of fundraisers, including the Benson’s Feed 4 Paws 4-H group, will be scattered throughout the Carson City and Gardnerville areas. At his most recent press conference, the governor declared many of us as COVID fatigued. The Carson City Chamber has partnered with the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada to temporarily reduce some of the fatigue by organizing a bit of Halloween golf and fun for those who just want to enjoy the outdoors while practicing all the current COVID safety protocols.

Since winter is right around the corner, there may not be many chances left to play golf.

The Nevada Day Golf Tournament, scheduled for this Saturday, Oct. 24, is quickly selling out, but there are a few spaces left to enjoy the first event of its kind in over a decade.

Once on a downward spiral, golf has become the sport du jour for those seeking to be outdoors in a safe environment where friends can meet and socially distance while getting needed exercise. Realizing the renewed interest in golf, the Carson City Chamber is taking the golf tournament to the next level.

Carson City Kiwanis hosted the 7th Annual Pancreatic Cancer Golf Tournament and Carson City Bench Press Championships at Silver Oak Golf Course Saturday, Sept. 19, 2020. The sold-out event resulted in 140 golfers teeing off and 9 weightlifters bench pressing to raise over $10,000 for Pancreatic Cancer Action Network and over $3,000 for the Marilyn Elaine Scholarship.

Carson City Kiwanis is hosting its seventh annual Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Day on Saturday with several activities for all to enjoy. Garth Richards celebrated his 85th birthday with his family and his beloved Silver Oak Golf Course. His birthday, which falls on the 13th, is also his favorite number.

The Nevada Day Committee would like to officially announce that, due to current conditions, the traditional Nevada Day Celebration will have a new look this year.

The American Cancer Society is hosting a poker run Saturday at Mills Park, and a free lacrosse clinic for kids ages 6-12 will be held at John L. Harvey Field. The Nevada Humane Society is virtually hosting its annual “Adopt a Duck” fundraiser for interested participants. Jim Sapien is the 2020 Sunday Men’s Club champion at Silver Oak Golf Course in Carson City. Sapien fired a 74-75 to best Dan Wilson by four strokes (77-76) during the two-day club championship Aug. 22-23. Brian Sweet (74-80) and Michael Moriarty (79-75) tied for third, while Scott Lusty was the low net (after handicap is applied) champion over the field with 141.

These two beauties walked across the 12th tee at Silver Oak Golf Course on Wednesday morning. Not being a sportsman I don’t know the difference between deer and elk, but these guys are pretty big.

The Carson Educational Support Association, which consists of Para Professionals, Secretaries, Clinical Aides, Nurses, Custodians, Skilled Maintenance workers, Bus drivers and Attendants, Nutrition workers, Deaf and hard of hearing interpreters, Library Media technicians, and IT workers, would like to thank the following businesses for for sponsoring and donating to our educational support staff banquet.

Carson City Kiwanis will host the 7th Annual Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Day fundraiser on Saturday, September 19, 2020 at Silver Oak Golf Course in Carson City, NV. The net proceeds from the fundraiser will support the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network and the Marilyn Elaine Academic Scholarship, awarded annually to local high school graduates.

Plenty of activities around Carson City are returning for all to enjoy throughout the summer. From hiking and biking trails and campgrounds, to several outdoor recreational activities, there are many ways to get outside and enjoy the warm weather.

Ryan Livermore, PGA presents the Livermore Kids Golf Academy at Silver Oak Golf Course in Carson City. Ryan has more than 8 years of experience teaching kids the fundamentals of the sport of golf. The Livermore Kids Golf Academy is a fun and engaging way for children ages 6-14 to learn the game of golf. The Carson Educational Support Association would like to thank the following businesses for sponsoring and donating to our educational support staff banquet. Although the banquet was canceled due to the Covid 19 pandemic, prizes have been given to the CESA members who won Classified of the Year.

On Sunday morning a pair of balloonists meandered across the skies of Carson City. Coming from the southeast they were eventually lost behind the trees heading toward Silver Oak Golf Course.

The balloonists were able to get in a last good view over Carson City on Mother's Day and ahead of a change in the weather beginning Monday.

Michael Moriarty took low gross honors with a 74 as the Sunday Men’s Club kicked off its season March 22 at Silver Oak Golf Course. The season was delayed because of bad weather the week prior, and play was in accordance with mandated health precautions.

The Carson City Board of Supervisors will be holding a special workshop at the Silver Oak Golf Course Executive Conference Center on Feb. 27 beginning at 8:30 a.m. to discuss items such as long-term motel stays, housing shortages, funding gaps, and more.

With golf season rapidly approaching full swing, the Silver Oak Men’s Club is accepting applications for those 18 and over who desire a welcoming environment to play competitively with friends, co-workers, and even family members.

What do you get when you combine 134 golfers, 70 runners, and 24 weight lifters on a beautiful Saturday in September? The results are over $9,000 raised toward pancreatic cancer funding and over $3,000 raised for local scholarships. Pretty amazing, right?
