Commemorative Lake Tahoe coins minted in Carson City still available, less than 300 remain

The first of its kind Lake Tahoe Commemorative Coin was minted this month on historic Carson City Mint Press No. 1 and less than 300 of the limited-edition coins are still available for the public, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, said Tuesday.

Coach 17 is the rail car that was present at Promontory Summit, Utah, in 1869, when the nation’s first transcontinental railroad was completed. It is part of the Nevada State Railroad Museum’s collection.

This will be the first time the museum has operated Coin Press No. 1 since it closed temporarily in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

‘Collecting Carson City’ part of Saturday’s Mint150 program

The Nevada State Museum in Carson City continues it series of Mint150 programs on Saturday with tours of the Mint building, a lecture on collecting Carson City memorabilia and a demonstration of historic Coin Press No. 1.

The Mint150 programs, the third Saturday of each month, are all up to the sesquicentennial of the U.S. Branch Mint in February 2020. The Nevada State Museum is housed in the former U.S. Mint building.
