Memorial run, history walks, camel races, veteran resource fair and more: Carson City region gears up for eventful weekend

Heading into the weekend, there’s plenty of activities around the Carson City region to help the next three days breeze by. Events include an artists fair at Carson Mall, the 60th annual camel and ostrich races in Virginia City, a memorial run in Carson City, the 28th annual Oktoberfest in Gardnerville, a Veterans Resource Fair at Carson Nugget, history walks at Mormon Station Park, live comedy and more.

Here's a rundown of activities over the next three days:

Friday, September 6

— V &T Railway holds auditions for 2019 Polar Express at Carson City Eastgate Depot (all day). V&T Railway will hold auditions for the 2019 Polar Express season on Thursday, Sept. 5 and Friday, Sept. 6 from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 7 from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. at the Eastgate Depot in Carson City. The railway is looking for actors, actresses and singers, age 13 and up to play roles from the popular movie including stewards and conductors, elves and Santa Claus. Interested applicants should bring a current theatrical resume, headshot and be prepared to sing, dance and act.

— Nevada Guard set to commemorate IHOP victims at Carson City memorial run. 7 a.m. at the Carson City IHOP, 3883 S. Carson Street. The Nevada Guard is set to host a memorial run, walk on Friday, Sept. 6, to commemorate the victims of the International House of Pancakes shooting that occurred in 2011. The run, walk will start at the Carson City IHOP, 3883 S. Carson St., at 7 a.m. Dozens of Soldiers and Airmen will traverse the 5-kilometer route from the restaurant to the Office of the Adjutant General complex at 2460 Fairview Drive in Carson City. Everyone is invited to join the Guardsmen in the free, non-competitive run, walk; note the event is untimed and no prizes will be awarded.

— Muscle Powered Friday morning walk at Westside Neighborhood. 8 a.m. Come join Muscle Powered for a free, guided group walk, hike, or ride to enjoy Nevada outdoors around Carson City! Westside Neighborhood from “Mountain Street Trailhead.” Meet in the parking lot at 1340 Mountain Street, across from the end of Fleishman Way.

— Story Time Adventures return to the Children's Museum. 9:30 a.m. The Children's Museum's NEA, Nevada Arts Council funded Story Time program returns Sept 6, 2019 at 9:30 a.m. The program will normally be scheduled on Fridays and will be presented by Jennifer Ringwood Anderson. Ms. Anderson is a gifted and passionate story teller and Montessori specialist having taught at High Desert Montessori, Carson Montessori, and the Brendon Montessori School in Billings, New York.

— Coin Press demonstrations at the Nevada State Museum. 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 600 N. Carson Street. Visitors to the Nevada State Museum can watch the museum’s historic Coin Press No. 1 carry on a mission it started nearly 150 years ago in the very same building. The venerable press which churned out millions of dollars in silver and gold coins during stints at U.S. Mints in Carson City, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Denver between 1870 and 1964. The press demonstrations will take place the last Friday of the month with two-person teams of volunteers not only working the press but sharing its history with museum visitors.

— 60th annual International Camel and Ostrich Races in Virginia City. 5 to 7 p.m. at the Virginia City Arena and Fairgrounds, 458 F Street. For 60 years, camels, ostriches and even zebras have come to Virginia City for the annual International Camel & Ostrich Races. This hilarious annual tradition dates back to the 1950s, and features jockeys precariously perched on their beasts as they maneuver the track at high speeds, aiming for a win among the cheering audience in this historic mining town.

— Open Mic Night at A to Zen Gift Shop. 6 to 9 p.m. at 1803 N. Carson Street. Open Mic Night is held at A to Zen Gift Shop on the Zen Den Stage. All talents, creative projects welcome. Come practice being on stage. There will be music, comedy, poetry, magic, and more. All ages and skill levels welcome. Open Mic Night happens every Friday from 6-9 pm. A to Zen is located at 1803 N Carson St., Carson City. Call 775.691.3945.

— Wildlife awareness talk featured at Washoe Lake State Park. 6 to 7 p.m. at Washoe Lake State Park Equestrian Pavilion. Learn how to handle a variety of wildlife encounters, whether it’s while camping, hiking, or in your own backyard. Join the Nevada Department of Wildlife’s Urban Wildlife Coordinator for a lesson on what to do and how to react to wild animals, including raccoons, coyotes, bears, mountain lions, bobcats, skunks, and even snakes.

— Friday outdoor concert at Living the Good Life Nightclub Bistro and Lounge. 6 to 9:50 p.m. at 1480 N. Carson Street. Trippin’ King Snakes will be rocking the outdoors. There will be plenty of live entertainment and refreshments for all to enjoy!

— Live music at Glen Eagles Restaurant. 6:30 to 9 p.m. at 3700 N. Carson St. Enjoy live music that is sure to make you get up and dance every Wednesday-Saturday starting at 6:30-9:00ish.

— Performance by the Grumpy Old Men. 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the Carson City Senior Center, 911 Beverly Drive. The Grumpy Old Men will be performing at the Carson City Senior Center! — Improv comedy at the Brewery Arts Center. 7 to 9 p.m. at 449 W. King Street. Join us for an evening of improv comedy where you never know what to expect, except a good time! Suggested donation of $5.00 at the door.

— Carson Comedy Club at the Carson Nugget. 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at 507 N. Carson St. Live Comedy every Friday and Saturday night at the Carson Nugget! Doors open at 7:15 p.m. Purchase tickets at the Winner's Club or online.

Saturday, September 7

— Carson Rifle and Pistol Club hosts rifle match this Saturday. 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Carson City Gun Range.The Carson Rifle and Pistol Club will hold two rifle matches on Saturday, September 7th, 8AM to 1PM. The matches will consist of a "Mini Palma" (a 100 yard match suitable for most .22 rifles) and a Vintage Military Rifle Match. The Vintage Rifle match is 100 yard rifle match for military rifles in service prior to the AR15. Check-in will be at the gate from 7-8 AM. You must be a member of the club and sign the city liability waiver to participate. Club memberships are $20 and will be accepted at the range. Cost of the matches are: Mini-Palma: $10; Vintage Rifle Match $10; or $15 if you shoot both.

— Flying Pig Indoor Flea Market. 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Fuji Park Fairgrounds, 601 Old Clear Creek Rd. Come on down and spend some time browsing the many vendors at this months flea market where you will find all kinds of crafts, antiques, collectibles, jewelry, arts, knives and so much more. You never know what you will find, new vendors each month. Admission is $1 for adults and kids under 18 are free.

— Camel race train in Virginia City. 8 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. at the Eastgate Depot, 4650 Eastgate Sliding Road. Rediscover Nevada’s rich history in mining and mills on the V&T Carson City-Virginia City route as you meander through tunnels, canyons and mining towns aboard a restored 1914 Pullman coach led by a 1916 Baldwin 2-8-0 steam locomotive. This relaxing, all-day train excursion is fully narrated with historical facts and anecdotes. Departing from Carson City’s Eastgate Depot at 8 am, the 24-mile round-trip tour includes a fun 3.5-hour stopover in historic Virginia City just in time for the International Camel Races.

— Fresh and Bountiful: Carson City Farmers Market returns this Saturday. . 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the corner of 3rd and Curry St. in Carson City. Enjoy fresh-picked produce, local meats, fresh flowers, artisan baked goods, jams, honey, crafts, live music and Carson City’s smiling faces.This week at the market you can enjoy music by Ricky D., stop by the kids' booth to make your own market bag, we have all the supplies for you. We are excited to see you all again this year.

— Backcountry history tour of Comstock era water flumes featured at Spooner Lake State Park. The tour begins at 9 a.m. at Spooner Lake. Join a park ranger on a guided, self-driven vehicle tour through the Spooner Backcountry of Spooner Lake State Park. We’ll follow the remnants of the historic Virginia Gold Hill Water Company flumes and pipes, and discuss Comstock history as we enjoy the day driving through the scenic park backcountry. Vehicles are not provided; you’ll need to bring your own 4WD vehicle, which must be a mid or full sized truck or SUV with good clearance. Drivers must be accustomed to driving on backcountry dirt roads. Bring lunch, water, sturdy boots, and sunscreen, and dress for the weather.

— Carson City Veterans Resource Fair. 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Carson Nugget. Nevada Rural Counties RSVP Program and the RSVP Veterans Advisory Council Presents the Carson City Veterans Resource Fair Sep., 7th, 10am - 1pm, at the Carson City Nugget. Veterans and their caregivers will be provided with information on valuable services and programs provided by area nonprofits, advisory groups, government agencies and the private sector.

— Carson Mall to host first Artists and Makers Fair this Saturday. 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 1227 S. Carson Street. Carson Mall will host its first Artists and Makers Fair this Saturday, Sept. 7. Come one and all for art showings and live demonstrations of artists work throughout the day at this all ages family event, which will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Carson Mall is looking for painters, calligraphers, sculptors, potters, woodworking, metal works or whatever your medium for you to exhibit your work, sell your work and demonstrate your artistic process! Buskers welcome. We are still taking applications!

— Guided tours of the Nevada State Capitol. Two separate tours will take place at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. every Saturday in Carson City. Tours typically take an hour and include both the exterior of the building, nearby memorials as well as the interior of the building. Tours are available for up to 20 people on a first-come, first-served basis. The building includes numerous historic artifacts that range from portraits of past Nevada governors to sculptures to historical items showcased during Nevada’s Sesquicentennial celebration. The Capitol remains open to the public Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Guided tours of up to 20 people can be arranged in advance by calling the Nevada State Museum’s Education Program at 775-687-4810, ext. 237.

— Coin Press demonstrations at the Nevada State Museum. 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 600 N. Carson Street. — History walks, talks and paranormal stories featured at Genoa's Mormon Station State Historic Park. The first history walk begins at 11:30 a.m. Mormon Station State Historic Park is offering a number of exciting interpretive programs this September. Join park staff in the heart of the Genoa National Historic District for history talks, guided walks, and other fun activities!

— Wine Walk returns to downtown Carson City. 1 to 5 p.m. in downtown Carson City, 101 N. Carson St. The Downtown Wine Walk is a must not miss! Held the First Saturday of every month from 1:00 - 5:00 p.m. For just $15 (ticket price supports the Downtown Business Association) you'll receive a commemorative wine glass and endless reasons to stroll through Downtown sipping and tasting the afternoon away.

— Saturday beginning wheel throwing at Ogres-Holm Pottery. 1 to 4 p.m. at 1215 S. Carson St. in Carson City. The Ogres of Ogres-Holm introduce you to clay in this 6-week open start class, including open studio time, is designed to get you started. It’s a great way to relax on a Saturday afternoon. $175 for six weekly sessions or $45 drop ins.

— Certified Equine first aid and certified CPR training. 1 to 5 p.m. at Rancharrah Equestrian Center, 6001 Talbot Lane. A training in various first aid and pet CPR training will be held this Saturday, Sept. 7 at the Rancharrah Equestrian Center. We will cover various topics to keep pets and others safe over an in-depth four-hour course.

— Lego Club at the Carson City Library. 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at 900 N. Roop Street. Build self-led creations through hands-on learning with LEGO Education materials. Participants 9 and under must be accompanied by a caregiver of at least 13 years of age at all times.

— Burgers for Badges at Minden Park. 4 to 7 p.m. at 1610 Esmeralda Ave. Come join us for a community barbeque to help support local law enforcement. Meals are limited, so don’t miss out on some great tasting food! Live music will be provided throughout the event.

— A wall of watercolor and more art reception. 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Brewery Arts Center, 449 W. King Street. Come join us for a vivid art reception from several local artists. There will be plenty of live music, delightful delectables and rich cultural conversation within our peers.

— Country dancing at Piper's Opera House. 6 to 10 p.m. at 12 B Street in Virginia City.
They’re doing it again and bringing country dancing to the historic opera house! All ages and skill levels are welcome. This is a free event! Water and snacks will be provided and the bar downstairs is open!

Sunday, September 8

— Muscle Powered Sunday bicycle ride. 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Fremont Elementary School. Meet at Fremont Elementary School in the South parking lot next to the Linear Ditch Trail. Typically, this ride consists of two 10-15 minute loops with varying pace depending on rider level. This is a “no drop” ride so no one will be left behind. All riders must have a bicycle in safe working condition, a helmet, and closed toed shoes. — 28th annual Oktoberfest. 12 to 4:30 p.m. at Heritage Park, 1447 Courthouse Alley in Gardnerville. The 28th annual event will be packed with dancing, crafts and plenty of kids games. Lunch will be served from 12 to 4:30 p.m. featuring great german food and specialty brews. There are plenty of activities for the whole family to come on down and enjoy!

— Sausage cooking class at Sierra Chef. 1 to 3 p.m. at 2292 Main St. Suites 3 and 4 in Genoa. Join us for a skills sausage cooking class on Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. at Sierra Chef. The cost is $75 per person.

— 3rd annual Friends of Coach Blaver Memorial Fundraiser to benefit the Northern Nevada Alzheimer's Association. 4 to 7 p.m. at the Westside Pour House and Artsy Fartsy Art Gallery parking lot, 110 Telegraph St. The third annual Friends of Coach Blaver Memorial Fundraiser to benefit the Northern Nevada Alzheimer’s Association will take place Sunday, September 8, 2019, from 4 - 7PM, at the Westside Pour House & Artsy Fartsy Art Gallery parking lot, 110 Telegraph St. Carson City, NV 89703. — Genoa Concert on the Green featuring Groove Foundry. 5 to 7 p.m. at Genoa Town Park, 2285 Genoa St. With eclectic jazz-funk-acid brass attitude , Groove Foundry features the lead-trio team of powerhouse tenor sax-man Marther, the unique low-brass sizzle of Nak on trombone and sexy trumpet stylings of Jen Campbell.
