As CHS teachers and students return to school, from, hopefully, a relaxing winter break, would it not be great to know one of their teachers recently published a short story? CHS Language Arts Department teacher Brigette Pugh is excited to share her latest published piece of writing.

It was a year of uncertainty. A year when we felt a need for something more. A need for peace. It was a year that felt similar to 2020. It was 2001.

The year that we watched the airplanes crash into the Twin Towers. The year we felt hopeless and confused and a desire to connect with people and with God. Seeing that need, the Carson City First United Methodist Church began what has become one of the most cherished Christmas traditions in Carson City.

From the Famous first line of Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, modified to appeal to the generosity of the Carson City community, "It is a truth universally acknowledged that a (generous city) in possession of a good fortune must be in want of (helping to support a CHS teacher)."

The teachers of CHS are asking if this is still true? Of course it is. Men, women, and children of Carson City are encouraged to purchase a T-shirt to support both breast cancer awareness and CHS teacher Kelly Gustafson, who is undergoing treatment for breast cancer.

Good morning Carson City and happy Saturday! Today we’ll see a high in the mid 80s and a low in the mid to low 40s, which to me sounds like Fall is right around the corner!

We’ve got a ton of great events today and tomorrow, so check them out below:

Heading into the weekend, there’s plenty of activities around the Carson City region to help the next three days breeze by. Events include an artists fair at Carson Mall, the 60th annual camel and ostrich races in Virginia City, a memorial run in Carson City, the 28th annual Oktoberfest in Gardnerville, a Veterans Resource Fair at Carson Nugget, history walks at Mormon Station Park, live comedy and more.

For 60 years, camels, ostriches and even zebras have come to Virginia City for the annual International Camel & Ostrich Races. This hilarious annual tradition dates back to the 1950s, and features jockeys precariously perched on their beasts as they maneuver the track at high speeds, aiming for a win among the cheering audience in this historic mining town.

Virginia City is known for two things: mining history and quirky, off-the-wall events. In 2019, those two things are joined together with the announcement of the historic Nevada town’s annual special events lineup and online ticket sales.

Virginia City has come to be known for embracing the strange, the odd, and the downright weird.

Teri Vance is an award-winning journalist, storyteller and newspaper columnist. She will present her talk, Lessons Learned on the Back of a Camel: The Life of a Nevada Writer and Adventurer at the Leisure Hour Club’s dinner meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 21.

I’m going to suggest that you keep this weekend’s plans flexible. There’s only a chance of rain, but the chance of it showing up at the wrong time is always high. The very early morning is best spent watching the hot air balloons against the Reno skyline, but you’ll probably want a sweater for the pre-dawn chill. Head up the hill to Virginia City this weekend. If you’ve never been to the annual International Camel Races, you’ve been missing out. Keep reading, there’s something for everyone on this list. Find your fun.

SATURDAY:

Head to bed early tonight, the Great Reno Balloon races are best enjoyed by early risers. Not to be outdone, Virginia City has discovered that camels and emus are even more hilarious to race. You’ve got plenty to look forward to this weekend, but don’t discount today. Jimmy Mallett will sing you back to yesteryear at Living the Good Life. You’ll get your motor running at Battle Born Harley Davidson’s weekly bike night.

THURSDAY:

VIRGINIA CITY, Nev. — An event that is almost as famous as the town it’s held in returns for its 58th year and brings with it a host of critters, four fast-paced shows, new seating options, special pricing and more entertainment value.

So many wonderful things happen as the summer winds down. Glow Patrol, camels, ostriches, not to mention the return of all things pumpkin. Enjoy the last of our balmy evenings with the Mark Castro Band on the stage at Living the Good Life. Let Mike Thomas wow you with tales of ‘Undersea Wonders’ during his presentation at the Plaza. Rockabilly takes the stage at Sassafras when the Scoundrels from Vegas get started around 8:30 p.m. Meet Michael Malley at the artist reception celebrating his exhibit 'Silver State Swimmer' in the Community Center Sierra Room.

Camels and Hot Air Balloons are right around the corner, but first enjoy Thursday in Carson City. Some live music with In Stride at Comma Coffee is a relaxing way to spend a lunch hour. Hick’ry Switch makes dinner on the veranda at Adele’s even more enjoyable. Let Tom Miller entertain you at Living the Good Life. Kids will have fun at the Carson Mall making scarecrows or at the Carson Library building things with Legos. The last day of March and we are all itching for some springtime weather. Luckily, we have some nice days ahead. Dust off that motorcycle and head down to Bike Night at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar. Enjoy an afternoon hike with Muscle Powered. The Kiwanis Club just pulled off their big annual Easter Egg Hunt and is always looking for civic minded community members to join: they meet every Thursday at Casino Fandango. If beer brewing is an interest, then check out the monthly meeting of the 395 Brewers at Just Brew It.

THURSDAY:

Deke DiMarzo, a 30-year law enforcement officer who turned his interests and energies to history upon his retirement, will present “The Paiute Wars” and “Camels on the Comstock and Other Interesting Information” at the Gold Hill Hotel Thursday Night Presentation Series on Thursday, March 31.

Known for its Wild West traditions and old miner Comstock legends, Virginia City has its authentic Nevada history and quirky, outlandish special events that keep people from around the world coming back for more.

This year is no different as the town’s 2016 special events calendar includes fan favorites such as the International Camel and Ostrich Races, the Rocky Mountain Oyster Fry and several parades as well as a brand new event, a western rodeo in September.

Come experience the Christmas Story unfold this weekend as you drive or walk the “Path” to Bethlehem. There is NO charge to enjoy this annual Carson City Christmas pageant, which represents First United Methodist Churches’ Christmas gift to Northern Nevada.

Ready, set, GO! Whether you want to watch camels race, or hot air balloons light up the sky, this is a great weekend in Northern Nevada. If cool cars are more your style, you’ll find Carson SYFL Sunday Funday Show and Shine at Johnny Rockets. The annual Luau, Auction, and BBQ for the Boys and Girls Club hits Mills Park this afternoon in the Teixeira Pavilion. Enjoy all you can eat roasted pork and Mai Tais for a great cause.

If cool cars are more your style, join the Freaks of Nature Car Club at a show and shine in the parking lot of Yogurt Beach in North Carson. It’s root, root, root for the home team as the WNC Wildcats play a double header at Harvey Field.

The 55th International Camel and Ostrich Races continues this weekend in historic Virginia City. Watch as amateur jockeys attempt to ride galloping camels, squirrely ostriches and bolting zebras in an entertaining Comstock tradition known for amusing audiences for 55 years.

Camels in Nevada will be the subject of the lecture presented by Nevada State Museum Curator of History, Robert A. Nylen. In 1855 Congress authorized $30,000 for camels as frontier military beasts of burden because of their adaptablility to desert heat, drought and food.
