Camels on the Comstock: 60th annual Camel and Ostrich Races begin Friday in Virginia City
For 60 years, camels, ostriches and even zebras have come to Virginia City for the annual International Camel & Ostrich Races. This hilarious annual tradition dates back to the 1950s, and features jockeys precariously perched on their beasts as they maneuver the track at high speeds, aiming for a win among the cheering audience in this historic mining town.
A comical racing spectacle that the entire family will enjoy this weekend, Sept. 6-8, the event includes a fair-like midway with vendors and treats for the family. You can even catch a ride on a camel — a photo op not to be missed.
The event kicks off Saturday with "Hot Camel Nights" with camels, ostriches, zebras and much more. The Friday evening event offers happy hour deals on drinks at the event bar.
The three-day event offers general admission, shaded and a VIP experience that allows you to see the entire racing action up close. Saturday includes two shows and the favored Camel Hump to C Street. Sunday is Dolan Auto Group Family Day with free camel rides for the first 100 kids.
