Friday fun in Carson City and beyond: Fathers’ Day PowWow and a bicycle invasion
Carson City again welcomes the Fathers’ Day PowWow to the Stewart Indian School Campus for a weekend of dancing, vendors and crafts, and community. Now, when I say bicycle invasion, I’m not exaggerating. The Carson City Off-Road hosted by Epic Rides brings mountain bike enthusiasts from all over to compete in our hills. You’ll find downtown road-closures to make way for the race routes, a bike expo, beer garden, and a music festival on Saturday. Head up to Western Nevada College to welcome the Journey of Hope Bike Tour. You’ll find music, dancing, and more at this family-friendly event bringing awareness to those with disabilities.
FRIDAY, June 15: Things to do in Carson City
- — Downtown Road Closures for the Carson City Off-Road (South Carson Street between Proctor and Fifth Street closed 5am Friday until Midnight Sunday, nearby westside side streets also effected)
- — Muscle Powered Morning Easy Walk: Mexican Ditch Trail, North - Meet at the Moffat Open Space parking area on Hells Bells Road at Parkhill Dr. (TIME CHANGE: 8am-9am; This is a dirt trail with some elevation gain; Participants are responsible for their own transportation to the hike meeting site; All walks require closed-toed shoes and water. Hats, sunscreen and walking sticks are recommended; friendly, leashed dogs welcome; The Friday Easy Walk is a repeat of the Tuesday Easy Walk)
- — Art Exhibit: Visual Oasis: Works from Creative Growth at the Carson City Courthouse: 885 E. Musser (8am-5pm; the exhibit includes mixed media, 2-D and 3-D art from 17 artists from the Creative Growth Art Center in Oakland, CA)
- — “From Dust to Water” Paintings by Matthew Couper in the OXS Gallery at the Nevada Arts Council: 716 N. Carson St. (8am-5pm)
- — High School Pic[ks] 2018 in the Community Development building [formerly the BRIC]: 108 E Proctor St (8am-12pm and 1pm-4pm; featuring over three dozen artists from Carson, Dayton, Douglas, and Pioneer high schools)
- — True Grit Art Show in the Western Nevada College Main, Atrium and Hallway Galleries in the Bristlecone Building (9am-7pm; The True Grit Art Show features over 70 works of art made of canceled casino playing cards; Part of the NEA/ Carson City Big Read celebration)
- — Demonstrations of Coin Press #1 at the Nevada State Museum (9am-12pm AND 1pm-4pm; demo included with museum admission of $8 - Patrons can also purchase a blank .999 silver medallion at the museum store for $60 and see it pressed with one of the special designs; Demonstrations every Friday in June)

- — Embroidery and Sewing/Textile Workshop: Bowl Crazy in the Carson City Library Capital Makers Room (4pm-6pm; In this workshop you will learn to cut out material, sew it together, and create a finished product, i.e., a quilted bowl cozy; The project involves cutting fabric, machine sewing, and machine quilting. Participants may bring thread and fabric for their specific item if desired. All materials will be provided for this workshop; Must Register HERE; It is required to complete a Sewing & Textile Certification Class before participating in this workshop.
