On Friday, March 13, as the state prepared to shut down, the fate of many four-legged, feathered and scaled residents hung in the balance.

Greg Hall, CEO of the Nevada Humane Society, which has a presence in Reno and Carson City, organized a late-night emergency call with staff. They discussed how to operate amid the threat of COVID-19, a potentially lethal virus that carried so many unknowns. Meanwhile, seven hours south, staff at The Animal Foundation in Las Vegas braced for the worst.

Bike Month has always been a cornerstone for Muscle Powered to bring community together every May to share our love of biking. Back in March, as we began to watch the COVID-19 outbreak unfurl in the United States, we held out hope that we could still come together to celebrate as usual.

The combined 29th Annual America’s Most Beautiful Bike Ride, that was postponed to merge with the 18th Annual Tour de Tahoe, scheduled for Sunday, September 13, 2020 has been postponed to their traditional dates in 2021.

While there may not be fireworks this Fourth of July, there are still many activities in Carson City and beyond!

Plenty of activities around Carson City are returning for all to enjoy throughout the summer. From hiking and biking trails and campgrounds, to several outdoor recreational activities, there are many ways to get outside and enjoy the warm weather.

The Nevada Department of Transportation continues to encourage safe, socially-distanced outdoor exercise to support both physical and mental health.

The American Heart Association/American Stroke Association presents the third annual Northern Nevada CycleNation on June 4 at Reno City Plaza. The fundraiser begins at 5:30 p.m. and will include food trucks, yard games, and music. The stationary bike sunset ride begins at 6 p.m. and lasts for two hours. CycleNation is nationally sponsored by Amgen and is locally sponsored by Carson Tahoe Health.

Featured speakers at Monday's Democratic luncheon will be Jon Ruiter, Executive Director of The Greenhouse Project, and Cory King, the project's greenhouse manager and garden educator.

On a recent holiday weekend, hundreds of visitors snapped selfies with a two-legged bear while sledding at Lake Tahoe. The “Take Care” bear mingled with families reminding them to throw away their broken sleds, rather than leaving them littered on the snow.

I write weekly articles and I rarely remember from week to week what I wrote. So, I reviewed this past year’s production for some of my favorites.

Carson High School cheerleaders cheered as they entered Walmart in Carson City and then performed two more cheers on top of that. There is an old saying found in a very old book which says, “You have not because you ask not.”

CARSON CITY — Wetlands are the link between land and water, where the flow of water, the cycling of nutrients, and the energy of the sun meet to create highly productive ecosystems with unique plant and animal life.

In broad terms, wetlands refer to all wet areas that provide ecosystem services and habitat for plants, wildlife, and aquatic species, including wet meadows, seeps and springs, playas, and riparian areas.

Homecoming, first seen in 1911 at the University of Missouri, is a wonderful event celebrated throughout the US at high schools and colleges. Homecoming is more than just a football game, it encompasses multiple celebratory events such as bonfires, tailgate parties, dances, and the crowning of a King and Queen. Fall is in the air in Carson City, and a change in the weather was one more reason for kids and adults alike to get out and celebrate this year’s Disney themed Happiest Homecoming on Earth.

Good morning Carson City and happy Saturday! It’s going to get hot again today with a high of 93, but don’t worry, as we get out further into the week the weather will turn more autumnal with highs in the 70s. It could be the last hot day for a while, at least until a freak 90s+ hot day in November followed by a week long blizzard, so enjoy it while it’s here!

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region packed with excitement over the next three days. Events include the Silver State Art Festival at Fuji Park, suicide awareness walks in Carson City, a Celtic faire at Dangberg Home Ranch, the ninth annual Edible Pedal bike ride at Bowers Mansion, train rides in Virginia City and much more!

Carson High School will again open its doors a little wider and longer for the 3rd Annual Back-to-School Night like no other Sept. 9. Open House, Open Hearts is a community event focused on building bridges to local services for teens and their families, increasing parent and guardian engagement at CHS, and celebrating the community, creativity, and diverse talents of Carson City.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days, including the Jazz and Beyond Carson City Music Festival, a bluegrass festival at Bowers Mansion, Celtic favorites at the BAC, tours at the Nevada State Museum, train rides, standup comedy at the Carson Nugget, a block party at Silver Oak Golf Course, a Boy Scouts car show at Fuji Park, "'Kutz for Kids' and more.

Heading into Thursday, August 15, 2019 we can expect hot weather to continue with high temperatures near 100. Among events for the day, there will be a wreath remembrance ceremony for fallen Carson City law enforcement officers at the sheriff's office, a Muscle Powered morning hike, art showings, and a meeting of the Status of Women in Nevada group at the Carson Nugget. As part of the Jazz and Beyond music festival, there will be an outdoor "Woodstock Remembered" concert at Comma Coffee and a music presentation, "All About that Bass" by Scot Marshall and Friends at the Nevada State Museum.

Heading into the midweek, Wednesday, August 14, 2019 activities abound around the capital city. There's a new group for writers that meets at the Brewery Arts Center; a salary negotiation workshop at WNC, a chautauqua and author presentations at Dangberg Historic Park. There's also the Jazz and Beyond Carson City Music Festival that will feature the Wesley Orsolic Trio during Wheeled Food Wednesday at the BAC, with jams to continue at Living the Good Life; there's also a real estate workshop for veterans, art showings, salsa dancing and more. Enjoy.

Heading into Tuesday, August 13, there's a galaxy of events lined up, beginning at midnight with a meteor shower watch party at WNC's Jack C. Davis Observatory. When the sun arrives there's fitness events, a book talk at the Nevada State Library and Archives, outdoor Carson City jazz festival happenings at Comma Coffee and Bob McFadden Plaza, family movie night at the library and more. Enjoy.

Heading into the first day of the work week, if you're an early, early riser or are settling in for the night, you'll want to step outside at around 3 a.m. for the peak of the Perseid shower, which will be in the eastern sky. If you missed them, there will be a viewing party hosted by Carson City Parks and Rec at the Jack C. Davis Observatory at WNC beginning at midnight Tuesday morning, August 13. Otherwise, it's onward and upward into the day with a Cooperative Extension presentation, Shred Kids mountain bike camp, Red Cross sitter certification class, West Coast swing dancing and more.

UPDATE: There's a star party late Monday night into Tuesday morning hosted by Carson City Parks and Recreation and Open Space. For summer’s most visible meteor showers, join the Carson City Parks, Rec and Open Space Department at Western Nevada College’s Jack C. Davis Observatory for some late night, educational fun. No pre-registration necessary. Please wear close-toed shoes and bring water for night hiking from the Observatory. Head lamps and flashlights are allowed. Heading into Monday, July 29, 2019 and we're wondering how the month went by so quickly. Again we're looking at a fairly typical end of July day weather wise, with sunny skies and a high around 94. On tap around Carson City are athletic, art and speaking events, a life guard camp, a computer coding camp, line dancing lessons and more. Enjoy.

More of the same weather wise is headed our way as we round the corner going into Thursday, July 25, 2019. Activities around the Carson City area feature a Muscle Powered hike along a portion of the Tahoe Rim Trail, Status of Women in Northern Nevada conference at the Carson Nugget, a lecture series at the Carson City BRIC, Freedom Fest Carson City GOP Barbecue at Glen Eagles, Thursday Cruise Night at Max Casino, plus afternoon and evening presentations on the Apollo Lunar Mission at the Nevada State Museum. The countdown to the weekend begins as we head into midweek, Wednesday, July 24, 2019 with daytime highs in the low 90s and plenty of indoor and outdoor activities. Topping the list is the Northern Nevada Development Authority's Legislative Roundup at Casino Fandango. If you want to know how this year's legislative session will affect business, be there. For those who look to the stars for the big picture, there's a multi-media hands on science day presentation at the Nevada State Museum as part of the Apollo 11 moon landing celebration; then there's Wheeled Food Wednesday at the Brewery Arts Center and lots more. Heading into Tuesday, July 23, 2019 there's plenty of indoor and outdoor activities around Carson City, including a morning power walk and evening hike and bike ride, an Apollo lecture at the Nevada State Museum, high tech imaging demonstrations with NASA technology at the Carson City Library Digitorium, archery at Centennial Park, art showings and more. The heat is on heading into Monday, July 22, 2019. We're looking at another sunny day in the capital city region with daytime highs in the mid to upper 90s. If you're up for for a walk or bike ride to get the oxygen flowing, it might be best to get it done first thing in the morning. Otherwise, there's plenty of ways to stay cool. Looking ahead for the first day of the work week there's a local talk, art classes, line dancing and more.

As we head into the final stretch of the week, events around the Carson City region are lined up for the next three days, including museum activities, outdoor concerts, a car cruise Friday at Carson Mall, athletic events, a Carson High School class of 1979 reunion, the Taste of Downtown on Saturday and much more.

As we begin to round out the work week heading into Thursday, July 18, 2019, we're looking at the same amount of sun with a daytime high around 90. Not bad for the middle of July. Activities lined up include a Muscle Powered hike, a cultural awareness conference at Carson Valley Inn, an artist reception at Artsy Fartsy, art classes at Rustically Divine, Thursday Cruise Night, the first "Third Thursday" farmer's market and barbecue in Dayton, a presentation on the Apollo Lunar Mission at the Carson City Library and more.
