Each year, nearly one in four deaths is caused by heart disease, but luckily, this is something we can all work together to change. There are many risk factors for heart disease: high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, cigarette smoking, overweight and obesity, poor diet, physical inactivity and alcohol use. Fitness on the Wire: Cold Weather Muscles
Submitted by Jerry Vance on Wed, 12/21/2011 - 2:42pmCARSON CITY, Nev. — Cold weather exercise has its drawbacks. Some of the drawbacks are mental. But a lot of them are physical. Cold stiff muscles don’t lend themselves to quick fitness and sports moves. A person’s range of motion also takes a big dip when it’s cold.
The human body functions best within a very narrow range of outside temperature, usually between 65 and 75 degrees with a humidity reading of about 45 percent. The further you get from this ideal temperature range, the harder it becomes for your body to compensate.

Column: Occupy Carson City
Submitted by T. Costa on Wed, 10/12/2011 - 9:54pmI stood outside of Comma Coffee Wednesday night, observing the people entering. I was hoping a friend of mine was going to come.
Finally, I went inside. There was a sign leaning against a chair that said OCCUPY NV CAPITOL. I introduced myself; these were the people I was here to see.
There were only 12 or 13 of us, but we all had one thing in common: we were disenchanted. We were the hungry, the tired of being pushed around, the broke. We are the 99%.
I should probably back up and explain myself now.
