Events around Carson City for Tuesday, Dec. 17

Clouds will roll into the capital city region Tuesday keeping temperatures quite chilly. Happenings around town include organized morning and evening fitness walks, a "Stuff the Bus Toy Drive" at Capital Ford, a Planning Commission meeting on the proposed Andersen Ranch development and a Posada event at Mark Twain Elementary. Plus, the Carson City School Orchestra Program will hold its annual Holiday Concert at the community center, The Peanuts Gang Trio will hold a free holiday concert at Sassafras, and more.

Here's what's happening Tuesday:

— Capital City Arts Initiative Presents: Saludos Amigos. 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Capital City Arts Initiative presents its exhibition, "Saludos Amigos", by artist Justin Favela at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery. The exhibition will be in the gallery from now through January 29, 2020. The Courthouse is located at 885 E Musser Street, Carson City. The reception and the exhibition are free and the public is cordially invited. The gallery is open Monday through Friday. In this installation, Favela will collage imagery from famous animated films that depict Latin American culture. Using his signature "piñata style" Favela will make large scale murals with tissue paper and glue that will break down images from films like “The Three Caballeros”, “The Emperor's New Groove” and “Coco.” These films celebrate Latin American culture but through the investigation of the imagery, Favela will highlight the exoticism and Hollywood fantasy that falsely represents an entire culture. Favela, a Las Vegas native, makes work in a piñata style exploring his identity as a Latino from Las Vegas with Mexican and Guatemalan parents. He makes his work with traditional craft materials like tissue paper and cardboard, making anything from sculptures to large scale paper installations.

— Muscle Powered Tuesday Morning Walk, December 17 at Linear Ditch. 9 a.m. Come join Muscle Powered for a free, guided group walk, hike, or ride around Carson City! Muscle Powered is a local non-profit organization that promotes walking, hiking, biking and trail building. The Tuesday morning Dec 17 walk will be at Linear Ditch – East. Meet at Moffat Open Space parking area on Hells Bells Road and Parkhill Drive. Morning walks start at 9 a.m. and are 1 to 2 miles with duration of 1 hour with usually negligible elevation gain, and frequently on paved or smooth paths. — Nevada Day art exhibit at Nevada Artists Association gallery at the Brewery Arts Center. The annual Nevada Day Art Exhibit at the Nevada Artists Association Art Gallery will be held through January 3, 2020. The NAA Gallery is located at the Brewery Art Center at 449 West King Street.

— Stuff the Bus Toy Drive at Capital Ford asks for gift donations for local families, especially teen gifts. Noon to 7 p.m. Tuesday will be The Salvation Army's first Angel Tree "Stuff the Bus" Toy Drive at Capital Ford in partnership with Capital Ford, Carson City School District, and KOZZ 105.7. Stuff the Bus Toy Drop from 12 Noon to 7PM, on Tuesday, December 17. Because of the short Christmas season we are short on toys! Toys can be dropped off now until Dec. 17 at Capital Ford. The Salvation Army staff and volunteers will be on hand to receive new unwrapped toys for their Christmas Toys for Joy Christmas Toy Shop. This toy shop is where parents, that have been qualified and registered a head of time, come and get to pick toys for their children. Most children will get one big toy and one little toy. Many also get a stocking stuffer or two and a coat or new outfit as well. Teen toys and gifts are the most needed. For those that are too busy to shop The Salvation Army can shop for you. A credit card donation can be made at carsontoydrop.org or checks can be mailed to The Salvation Army, care of "Stuff the Bus", 911 E. 2nd St. Carson City, NV 89701. or cash, check or charge can be dropped by Capital Ford on the 17th. Gift cards make a great gift for the teens.

— Proposed Andersen Ranch development topic at upcoming Carson City Planning Commission meeting. 3 p.m. In addition to discussing Adele’s becoming a parking lot, the Carson City Planning Commission will also discuss the tentative subdivision map of Andersen Ranch at its upcoming meeting. Due to the public interest in this item, it will be heard no earlier than 5:30 p.m. to allow for public comment. The meeting, however, begins at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 17 in the Sierra Room of the Community Center located at 851 E. William Street. The applicant is proposing 203 residential lots with a minimum lot size of 4,407 square feet, according to the agenda. Vehicular access to the neighborhood will be found on Mountain Street, Ormsby Boulevard, West Sunset Way, North Richmond Avenue, Lexington Avenue, La Mirada Street, and Bolero Drive.

— Muscle Powered hosts Tuesday evening walk in Downtown Carson City. 5:30 p.m. Come join Muscle Powered for a free, guided group walk, hike, or ride around Carson City. Muscle Powered is a local non-profit organization that promotes walking, hiking, biking and trail building. For Tuesday evening, Dec. 17 Muscle Powered will lead a walk in Downtown Carson City on the east side. Meet at parking lot directly across from the Nevada Supreme Court on Stewart Street, between 5th and Musser. We will go somewhere after the walk for hot chocolate and coffee. Tuesday evening hikes start at 5:30 p.m. and are usually 1 1/2 hours or more duration and are 4-6 miles in length. Water, closed-toed shoes, and a headlamp/flashlight are required. — Posada Event at Mark Twain Elementary to Increase Family Involvement. 5:30 p.m. Administrators and educators at Carson City’s Mark Twain Elementary School will host Posada 2019, Tuesday, Dec. 17, from 5:30-8:30 p.m. The event, open to all students and families, is part of the English Second Language (ESL) Department’s iCan Initiative designed to increase parent and family involvement for students and to help reinforce and extend learning taught during regular classroom instruction. It will include piñatas, face painting, traditional Hispanic holiday food and music, family activities, photos and more. We are hoping to build a strong home-to-school connection by providing these activities and allowing students to showcase some of their talents and traditions during this event, said Mark Twain Elementary Principal Ruthlee Caloiaro. We need to involve our families in the learning process to build a greater understanding of the type of learning that occurs at school, she said. By providing this event, we will educate and empower our families as we provide them with the knowledge and information necessary to support learning at home. In September, Carson City School District announced 70 percent of the schools within the district showed improvements in the latest Star Ratings report, according to the Nevada Department of Education State. With the release of the Nevada School Performance Framework (NSPF), Mark Twain Elementary School was one of the schools in Carson City to improved enough to earn a higher star ranking, 4 stars up from 2 stars last year.

— Parents of Addicted Loved Ones hold meetings Tuesday evenings. 6 p.m. PAL provides education and support, at no cost, for family members (over 18) trying to save a son, daughter or family member from addiction to alcohol or drugs. By attending our meetings on Tuesdays, 6 p.m. at Partnership Carson City office at 1925 N Carson City St., you will give and receive support from others who are facing the same challenges you are.

— Sassafras presents a very special free holiday event featuring The Peanuts Gang Trio. Playing the music of Vince Guaraldi and more. From the city of Reno, The Peanuts Gang Trio is a new band specialized in writing and playing jazz roots music. The trio gained popularity performing Vince Guaraldi’s “A Charlie Brown Christmas” music during the winter holiday seasons. After carefully studying Guaraldi’s compositions, the Gang was able to develop a polished traditional sound and transitioned into a full-time band. The Gang’s style is distinctly vintage resembling a lot of the music recorded in the Bay Area during the 1960s. Their playful personality forces listeners to smile until their cheeks hurt. Travel back in time with The Peanuts Gang Trio.

— Empty Bowls, Open Studio. 6 to 8:30 p.m. Create an empty bowl to donate to charity, instruction will be offered to create and paint a bowl or create something on our own during open studio session. Open studio time at Ogres-Holm Pottery is free of charge and open to the public. 1215 South Carson Street.

— Swing Dance lessons at Yaple's Ballroom. 6 p.m. Looking for a date night idea? Want a night out with the friends! Grab the family and Swing on by Yapel's Ballroom! Come to our Swing Dancing Class. It is the best! It's great physical activity, great music, an easy going style that can help you connect with a partner easily. This is also a great style if you don't have a partner. When you come to class, single guys and gals rotate so that they get a chance to try the swing moves with a partner. — Carson City School Orchestra Program Holiday Concert. 6:30 p.m. The Orchestra Program of the Carson City School District will hold its Holiday Concert on Tuesday, Dec. 17, 6:30 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center. Come to hear a mix of tasteful holiday favorites and some gems of the orchestral repertoire, all performed by the Orchestra students of Carson Middle, Eagle Valley Middle and Carson High Schools, as led by Dr. Brian Fox. Admission to the concert is free. The community center is located at 851 East William Street.

— Brewery Arts Center is hosting Santa and His Village through Christmas Eve. Santa Clause is coming to town! You can catch him at the Brewery Arts Center, 449 W King St. beginning weekly through Dec. 22. Visits and photos with Santa will be by appointment Thursdays and Fridays. You can book an appointment by calling 775-720-2542. You can book an appointment starting at 3 to whenever! These days are first come first serve: 11/30, 12/1, 12/7, 12/8, 12/14, 12/15, 12/21, and 12/22. Our times on Saturdays and Sundays are 12-5. We will also be there Christmas Eve from 11-2. — Carson Mall Holiday Craft Underway. Show will be held now until Dec. 24 in the interior of the mall. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. — Carson City's Vitalant is hosting a 'Food & Toy Drive' through Dec. 22 to benefit local charities. Carson City's Vitalant, located at 256 E Winnie Ln, is hosting a food drive and gift drive now through Dec. 22 to benefit Northern Nevada Dream Center and the Boys & Girls Club of Northern Nevada. Gifts can be any age range so long as they are unwrapped. Food items include unexpired canned foods or meats, non-perishable boxed foods, peanut butter, etc. For a complete list of most needed items please email gwagner@vitalant.org. — Carson City area food drive happening now to Dec. 21 to benefit Food For Thought. Krisha Caraway with Valley Realty and Management is hosting a food drive to benefit Food For Thought in Carson City. The food drive runs now through Dec. 21 and items can be dropped off between the hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday to her office in Valley Realty and Management located at 302 E William Street.

Established in 2007, Food for Thought was founded on the goal to feed hungry children on the weekend so they can return to school Monday ready to learn. Each Friday, Food for Thought provides a healthy bag of food to hungry children in Carson City, and parts of Douglas County, allowing these children to eat on the weekends and to arrive at school on Monday nourished and ready to learn. Items that are most beneficial to be accepted are:
