Nevadans to Vote on Mining Tax Cap in 2014

Five Assembly members took the opportunity to speak prior to the vote on Senate Joint Resolution 15. Assemblywoman Irene Bustamante Adams and Assemblyman Skip Daly both spoke in favor of the resolution.

Nevada remains No. 1 in home foreclosures

Nevada retains the nation’s highest foreclosure rate for a second month, according to the report.

The northbound lane on Fairview Drive will be closed between Fifth Street and Edmonds Drive due to roadway maintenance. Detours will be marked.
There will be road work on Long Street between Roop Street and Molly Drive. No delays are expected.

NHP to launch Zero-Tolerance Enforcement Week; aims stop drivers using cell phones
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Tue, 04/16/2013 - 8:53amApril is National Distracted Driving Month and the Nevada Highway Patrol will be implementing a zero-tolerance enforcement period next week, April 22-26, as a strict traffic safety initiative to hopefully curtail the use of hand-held phones while motorists are driving. Troopers around the Silver State are still continuing to observe motorists texting, talking, and reading non-voice communications despite the fact this behavior became illegal over 15 months ago.

Nevada Department of Public Safety on alert following Boston bombing

In a news release issued late this afternoon, DPS said law enforcement agencies statewide take all direct and indirect threats very seriously and will continue to be proactive with security and enforcement strategies.
As a precautionary measure, the DPS is collaborating with federal officials to monitor and implement additional safety efforts after today’s tragic event in Boston, the release states.

‘Bullying’ on YouTube Moves Senators to Act

The bill would work to prevent minors from “transmitting or distributing certain images of a violent offense committed against another minor” and would also revise the definition of cyber-bullying.

Center Drive and Silver Sage Drive are also closed south of Appion Way. Bennett Avenue is closed between Center Drive and Bigelow Drive. Detours will be marked.
Utility work will begin next week on the following roads.
— Carson Street between Second Street and Musser Street.
— Musser Street between Carson Street and Curry Street (temporary road closure possible).

New Carson Tahoe Cardiology Office Expands Options for Reno Patients

The office is open Monday to Friday from 9:00am to 4:00pm.
“We have been serving Reno patients looking for quality cardiology alternatives for several years,” said Dr. David Baker. “It is great to provide them with the convenience of our new location and we are excited to be able to offer our services to more of our new neighbors.”

Carson City Search and Rescue hosts Geocache Adventure

Carson City geocachers get ready. Saturday, April 27 is your day. The Geocache Adventure, a second-annual event hosted by the Carson City Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Unit, will provide a day's worth of searching for participants and $1,000 in prizes.

Faulds presents a thought-provoking question as the topic of the Nevada State Museum’s Frances Humphrey Lecture Series at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 28. In “Why is Nevada in Hot Water: Tectonic Controls on Geothermal Activity in the Great Basin,” Faulds focuses on how fault systems initiate and evolve through time.
Geothermal studies enhance understanding of what controls hot fluids in the earth’s crust and aid in exploration and discovery of energy resources. Scientists study geologic faults and stress conditions to determine where to drill.

Major road construction begins Monday on Carson City freeway

Snyder Avenue will be closed between East Roland Street and Center Drive. This portion of Snyder Avenue will remain closed for about nine months to allow for the construction of the bridge. Here's a story in AroundCarson.com that helps explain the evolution of the freeway.

Truckee Tomorrow Economic Development Initiative Moves into Next Phase

The meeting was facilitated by Ryan Sharp, Director of the Center for Strategic Economic Research (CSER), an economic research and consulting group. CSER is affiliated with SACTO (Sacramento Area Commerce & Trade Organization) a widely respected non-profit and the leading facilitator of economic development for the Sacramento region, of which Truckee Tomorrow is a member.
Douglas authorities seek public help in finding runaway teen

On Feb. 23, Geolyn Balleza ran away from her parent’s home in Minden. She is believed to have run away and is somewhere between Douglas County and the Reno/Sparks area, according to Douglas County authorities.

Carson City wild horse advocates lose battle with BLM; horse trapping underway

The horses are a part of the Pine Nut Mountains herd management area that is adjacent to Deer Run Road. The following is from Margie Quirk, a wild horse advocate, who, along with nearly two dozen residents, were unsuccessful in their attempt to convince the BLM to consider other alternatives than to trapping and moving the 11 wild horses from the area.

I was blown away with the amount of information given in such a short time, but the most disturbing moment was announced with applause.

Carson City man gets maximum sentence for attempting to operate forgery lab
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Tue, 02/19/2013 - 4:49pmGregory Alan Pugh, 52, was sentenced Tuesday in Carson City District Court for one count of attempted establishing or possessing financial forgery lab and possessing forged instruments or bills, said District Attorney Neil A. Rombardo in a news release.
Pugh received 4 years to 10 years and 15 months to 5 years respectively. The two sentences will run concurrent to each other. As a result, Pugh will spend a minimum of 4 years and up to 10 years in prison, which is the maximum sentence.

Smoke in Carson City area from Lake Tahoe prescribed fires

Fire and fuel crews with the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit of the Forest Service began the controlled burns today. Winds in front of a storm system are pushing smoke into the area, confirmed Carson City Fire Chief Stacey Giomi.

Douglas authorities seek help identifying man in credit card fraud at Target store

On Jan. 2 and again Jan. 4 the man in these two photos entered the Target store and used fraudulent credit cards to obtain an undisclosed amount of merchandise, said Sgt. Pat Brooks in a Douglas County Sheriff's Office news release. The man is considered a "person of interest" in the case.

Carson City man jailed after trying to cash fake $100 bill at casino
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Sun, 01/27/2013 - 12:57pmA 24-year-old Carson City man faces a felony charge of attempting to cash a counterfeit $100 bill at a casino in the 500 block of North Carson Street.
Kevin Frederick Repass was arrested Jan. 24, at 5:32 p.m. According to a Carson City Sheriff's Office report, security at the casino detained Repass for trying to break the phony $100 bill, asking for $20 bills. He told casino security that he had received the $100 bill from another casino, the report states.

Mr. Gallagher stated (and I am paraphrasing here) “our children are not allowed to pray in public schools”
“The United States Supreme Court has never held that students cannot pray in school.

'How-to' course on running a school yearbook program offered at WNC

But this same technology offers so many choices and alternatives that the process of beginning or updating a yearbook program can appear overwhelming. "How to Advise Yearbook" is a new course offered this spring in Carson City through the Western Nevada College's Community Education department and is designed to give aspiring and novice yearbook advisers a solid grounding in the theory and application of modern yearbooking.
Carson City prepares for widespread increase in flu, vaccines readily available

Based on recent reports from the CDC, the flu has started to peak nearly 5 weeks early this year, with significant activity reported in over 41 states with 18 deaths reported in children thus far. The predominant current flu strain that is being reported with widespread activity, H3N2 (Influenza A), appears to have good match to the flu strains in this year’s vaccine, according to a news release.

Freezing temperatures are keeping the roads icy in town, and there is bicycle-stopping deep snow in the nearby mountains. Douglas County activates Search and Rescue in search for missing Petaluma woman
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Thu, 01/03/2013 - 10:34amThe Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public’s help in locating a missing 19 year old female, Alyssa Byrne, who was attending the SnowGlobe music event in South Lake Tahoe on New Years Eve.
The circumstances to her disappearance are unknown at this time. Douglas County Search and Rescue has been activated to assist in an area search.
Alyssa Byrne, from Petaluma, Calif., is 5 foot 3 inches tall and 125 pounds. She has black hair and blue eyes, last seen wearing a black sweatshirt, black yoga type pants, black snow boots and her hair was pulled back.

NHP issues nearly 12,000 cell phone-related distracted driving traffic citations
Submitted by editor on Wed, 01/02/2013 - 8:57amTroopers from the Nevada Highway Patrol issued nearly 12,000 traffic citations to motorists observed talking, texting or reading non-voice communication while operating a motor vehicle on Nevada’s highways in 2012.
Thirty of the offenders last year received their second citation for the same offense with 25 of those witnessed on their phone for a third time and cited once more. In all, as of Dec. 26, 2012, there were 11,992 citations issued.
