Music, outhouses, fundraisers and more: Saturday, Oct. 5 Happenings in Carson City and surrounding areas

Happy Saturday, Carson City! We're going to have a warm day in the low 70s, so be sure to throw on your t-shirts which may be the last time this fall (barring the typical end of November inexplicable heat wave).

On the docket today we have the 30th annual Outhouse Races in Virginia City, a guitars and ukulele performance at the BAC, fundraisers, and more. Check out below to see what we've got going on for the rest of the weekend:

Saturday, October 5

Check out the stars with a Carson City Library premiere card (all day). A premiere card from the Carson City Library is all families need to check out a lunar telescope for two weeks of space-gazing. The premiere card is free and works like a regular library card, with extra access to special items such as the NASA Explorer Backpacks now being offered by the Carson City Library. To get the card, just visit the library at 900 N. Roop St. and fill out an application. You must be 14 years of age or older to qualify. Bring valid photo identification, have a standard library card in good standing for 90 days and, for 14- to 17-year-olds, a parent or guardian’s signature.

Carson City Kiwanis is serving breakfast to raise money for scholarships. 8 to 10 a.m. at the Carson City Applebee’s. Carson City Kiwanis is serving short stacks for a tall cause at the Carson City Applebee’s on Oct. 5, 2019 from 8 to 10 a.m. The entire proceeds of this event will support the Ralph Denny Memorial Scholarship that awards a one-time $750 scholarship to a local high school graduate each school year.

Guitars and Ukuleles at the Brewery Arts Center. 9 to 10 a.m. at 449 W. King Street. Laurence Juber’s career jumped into hyper-speed when Paul McCartney asked him to join Wings as lead guitarist. Since then he has become one of the world’s great acoustic guitarists. Daniel Ho is a six time Grammy® award winning multi-instrumentalist with a world-wide following. Together, they will present a new musical project called Guitars & Ukuleles, an incredible day of hands-on learning, culminating in a live performance for guitar and ukulele enthusiasts.

Main Street Gardnerville's Fall Fest. 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Heritage Park. Join us for a day of Harvest and family fun! It is nonstop fun for the entire family. Shop at our vendors and participate in the harvest events.

American Dream Gun Show. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Mills Park, 1111 E. William Street. This gun show is hosted by American Dream Gun Show. 'Fall Tot Trot' teaches children to love the outdoors with Carson River scavenger hunt. 10 a.m. at Riverview Park. Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space will host a “Fall Tot Trot” Sunday, October 5 beginning at 10 a.m. at Riverview Park. This interpretive hike includes a scavenger hunt to learn about the Carson River habitat, and will help foster a love of exploring the outdoors!

Voices of the Past in Virginia City. 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Silver Terrace Cemetery, 381 Cemetery Rd. Come see the history of the Comstock come alive! The event is a ghostly walking tour performed by Funtime Theater and raises funds for the cemetery’s restoration.

Train to Virginia City from Carson City. Event takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 4650 Eastgate Siding Road. Prices for the ride range from $25-$55. Rediscover Nevada’s rich history in mining and mill on the V&T Carson City-Virginia City route as you meander through tunnels, canyons and mining towns aboard a restored 1914 Pullman coach led by a 1916 Baldwin 2-8-0 steam locomotive. This relaxing all-day train excursion is fully narrated with historical facts and anecdotes. Departing from Carson City’s Eastgate Depot, the 24-mile round-trip tour includes a fun 3.5-hour stopover in historic Virginia City, where you can stroll the boardwalks and explore restaurants, shops, saloons, museums, mines and more. Mommy and Me networking event at Our Park in Dayton. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at at 370 River Street, just off of Highway 50 as you’re entering Dayton. There will be a Mommy and Me Networking event Oct. 5 at Our Park in Dayton. We are there to let the kiddos run around before the predicted wet winter takes hold. The event will run all day. Local direct sales reps are invited to bring their businesses and kids to have a great day at the park. Locals who are interested in browsing are strongly encouraged to come and visit.

Guided tours of the Nevada State Capitol. Two separate tours will take place at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. every Saturday in Carson City. Tours typically take an hour and include both the exterior of the building, nearby memorials as well as the interior of the building. Tours are available for up to 20 people on a first-come, first-served basis. The building includes numerous historic artifacts that range from portraits of past Nevada governors to sculptures to historical items showcased during Nevada’s Sesquicentennial celebration. The Capitol remains open to the public Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Guided tours of up to 20 people can be arranged in advance by calling the Nevada State Museum’s Education Program at 775-687-4810, ext. 237.

Austin Bantam Society to celebrate 51st annual meeting with Carson City car show. 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Nevada State Legislative Grounds. The Austin Bantam Society will hold its 51st annual meeting in Carson City, Oct. 4-5. A car show will take place at the Nevada State Legislative Grounds on Saturday, Oct. 5 from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Cars in the club include: American Austins 1930-35, American Bantams 1938-1940, British Austin 7s 1923-1938, and BRC 1940-41, which were the first Jeeps. These very rare small cars are part of our forgotten automobile history. Please join us on Saturday, Oct. 5 for a rare opportunity to see the cars and you will fall in love with them.

Coin Press demonstrations at the Nevada State Museum. 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 600 N. Carson Street. Visitors to the Nevada State Museum can watch the museum’s historic Coin Press No. 1 carry on a mission it started nearly 150 years ago in the very same building. The venerable press which churned out millions of dollars in silver and gold coins during stints at U.S. Mints in Carson City, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Denver between 1870 and 1964. The press demonstrations will take place the last Friday of the month with two-person teams of volunteers not only working the press but sharing its history with museum visitors.

La Nova Beauty Salon in Carson City hosts grand opening. 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 101 Hot Springs Rd. Looking for an all-organic salon, free of harsh chemicals for your hair and skin care needs? La Nova Beauty welcomes you to its grand opening celebration in Carson City this Saturday, Oct. 5. You can enjoy refreshments while you browse the shop. There will be demonstrations performed by the beauty specialists using only the OWAY line products. The grand opening is from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Oktoberfest at the Casino Fandango. 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at 3800 S. Carson Street. Casino Fandango presents the 5th annual Oktoberfest! Get twisted up in a good pretzel and party your strudel off with live entertainment, guest vendors, craft fair, German food, and a Bavarian beer garden.

30th annual World Championship Outhouse Races. 12 to 3 p.m. at C Street in Virginia City. This is one time and place where potty humor is accepted and encouraged – the 30th annual World Championship Outhouse Races. This free event dates back when outdoor plumbing was outlawed in Virginia City, angry residents took to the streets with their outhouses in protest, and a tradition was born.

Wine Walk returns to downtown Carson City. 1 to 5 p.m. at 101 N. Carson Street. The Downtown Wine Walk is a must not miss! Held the First Saturday of every month from 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. For just $15 and you’ll receive a commemorative wine glass and endless reasons to stroll through Downtown sipping and tasting the afternoon away. Bring your wine walk glass with the Carson City Logo on it and pay only $12. Saturday Beginning Wheel Throwing at Ogres-Holm Pottery. 1 to 4 p.m. at 1215 S. Carson St. in Carson City. The Ogres of Ogres-Holm introduce you to clay in this 6-week open start class, including open studio time, is designed to get you started. It’s a great way to relax on a Saturday afternoon. $175 for 6 weekly sessions or $45 drop ins.

American Cancer Society hosts Relay for Life at Carson City's Mills Park. 1 to 9 p.m. How has cancer affected you and is there anything you can do? Join your family, friends, neighbors and people from your community as we walk Relay for Life of Carson City/Douglas County this Saturday Oct. 5 from 1 to 9 p.m. at Mills Park. Help us celebrate our survivors, those who are fighting and those would have survived cancer. And join us in remembering those we have lost to cancer. Join us in the fight against this terrible disease. Mills Park is located at 1111 East William Street in Carson City. As always, the community is invited to this free event.

Hauntober returns to Virginia City. Throughout the month of October, Virginia City will be hosting several events to shine light on its spooky past. Virginia City boasts its notoriety of being one of the three most haunted towns in the United States, along with Savannah and Charleston. Otherworldly “haunts” exist during Halloween as Virginia City celebrates its ghostly history and offers a month of ghost experiences. Want to have your own paranormal experience? See the places and feel the chill with Bats in the Belfry Ghost Tours, or jump on board the V & T Railroad Halloween train for a spooky trip.

Lego Club at the Carson City Library. 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at 900 N. Roop Street. Build self-led creations through hands-on learning with LEGO Education materials. Participants 9 and under must be accompanied by a caregiver of at least 13 years of age at all times.

Steppin' Back in Time 1950s fundraiser featured at Virginia City's historic Fourth Ward Schools. 5 to 8 p.m. at 537 South C Street in Virginia City. Virginia City's Historic Fourth Ward School Museum’s 3rd Annual Steppin’ Back In Time fundraising event, highlighting The Fabulous 1950’s, will be Saturday, Oct. 5, 2019 from 5 to 8 p.m. Join us for an exciting evening of fun as we step back to the era of the Sock Hop. Come dressed in your favorite Poodle Skirt or Denim (optional), enjoy hors d'oeuvres and refreshments and celebrate life as it was on the Comstock.

Muscle Powered Sunday bicycle Ride. 9 a.m. Meet at Fremont Elementary School, 1511 Firebox Rd, Carson City, NV 89701, in the south parking lot, next to the Linear Ditch Trail. Come join Muscle Powered for a free, guided group walk, hike, or ride around Carson City! Muscle Powered is a local non-profit organization that promotes walking, hiking, biking and trail building.

Nevada Raider Nation Carson City Chapter Game Watch. 10 a.m. at Jimmy G’s, 301 N. Carson Street. Nevada Raider Nation - Carson City Chapter will host a game watch of the Oakland Raiders vs Chicago Bears at 10 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 6 at Jimmy G's, 301 N. Carson St., in Carson City. The game, televised live from London, will be shown on three TV screens. New members are welcome to watch with the veterans, and are welcome to join. Membership is $20 per person.

Trails Association, Carson City Parks Recreation and Open Space to host Prison Hill clean-up. 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department, with the Pine Nut Mountains Trails Association and the Nevada Off-Highway Vehicle Commission, is sponsoring a volunteer Clean-Up Day at the Prison Hill Recreation Area in the OHV Area. The public is invited to come out and help. We will meet in the Prison Hill OHV Staging Area.

Camp GOTR (Girls on the Run) is coming to Carson City for the second year in a row! Camp GOTR will be a week-long, half-day summer camp from 8 AM- 12 PM at the Carson City Community Center the week of August 5th- August 9th.

Girls on the Run Sierras is a character-building program for girls in 3rd through 8th grade operating in the Reno-Tahoe area.

A number of new Junior Park Rangers received their badges as they were sworn in as part of the annual Junior Park Rangers Day in Carson City.

The next Carson City Board of Supervisors meeting will be held on Thursday, May 2, 2024 beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Bob Crowell Boardroom of the Community Center, located at 851 E. William Street.

Meet Ricky and Reba, a sweet bonded pair who are waiting for their forever home. Sometimes bad things happen to good cats. Nobody knows this better than Ricky and Reba. Douglas County officials have announced that construction will begin soon on the first phase of the Muller Parkway Project. The project aims to alleviate traffic congestion in Minden and Gardnerville, offering an alternative route to the main U.S. Route 395 through town. St. Paul's Lutheran Family Church in Carson City is having a huge rummage sale Saturday, April 27 at 8 am until 1:30 pm. This is a fundraiser by St. Paul's women's group, WELCA, in association with Thrivent. There will be a jewelry room and a boutique featuring decor de jour and collectibles.

Carson City area casino gaming revenue was up slightly in March, according to the Nevada Gaming Control Board. Statewide, revenue was down 1.65 percent compared to March 2023.

UPDATE THURSDAY: The Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the two people who died Wednesday morning following the two vehicle crash on I-580 in Carson City. They are Alejandra Hernandez Valtierra, 36, and Viola Santoyo Huizar, 48, both of Carson City.

UPDATE 12:42PM: Southbound I-580 in Carson City was opened as of around 11 a.m., said a Nevada State Police spokeswoman, who provided more details of the fatal crash that happened early Wednesday morning.

Both the driver of a car and a truck involved in the crash died. Their names have not been released pending notification of family members. The car, which was going the wrong way — northbound in the southbound lane — struck the truck and caught on fire, according to a NSP preliminary investigation thus far. The vehicle makes are unknown at this time.

Dayton Elementary School in Lyon County was honored Wednesday along 13 other schools including Carson High in Carson City as a Nevada Purple Star School.

Schools receiving the designation have committed to supporting the educational and social-emotional needs of military-connected children and their families.
