It was an eventful year around the Carson City region notwithstanding the limitations caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Here's some notable stories that were not pandemic related that happened in 2020.

National Wreaths Across America Day, celebrated at Lone Mountain Cemetery in Carson City on Saturday, Dec. 19, honored veterans by placing wreaths on headstones and markers at over 1,200 locations throughout the U.S. and abroad to those who served our country.

Holly Marie Shrum died in Carson City, NV on Monday October 12, 2020 surrounded by her family. Holly was 44 years old.

UPDATE MONDAY: The Carson City Board of Supervisors will hold a special meeting this Thursday, 1 p.m. to discuss and take possible action regarding the appointment of a person to fill an anticipated vacancy in the office of Ward 3 Supervisor on the Board of Supervisors for a term that begins Jan. 4, 2021 and ends Jan. 1, 2023.

On Monday, Girl Scouts from Troops 1951 and 35 gathered to plant 15 trees at Carson’s historic Lone Mountain Cemetery.

Halloween will be celebrated this week at one of the most haunted destinations in the country, Virginia City, where the Wild West and ghosts of the past are part of the Comstock's legendary folklore.

Verne R. Horton of Carson City, Nevada passed away at his residence on October 19, 2020. He was born February 1, 1941 in Los Angeles, CA and is survived by loving and devoted wife of 23 years, Brenda; sons Sean and Scott, daughter Debra, 5 grandchildren and brother, Jim Horton.

Mr. Thomas A. Bohemier, 74, of Brooksville, Florida passed away peacefully with his wife and children by his side on October 11, 2020.

The only thing that rivals the tales of our Virginia City, Nevada mining past is our connection with ghostly spirits. Recognized as one of the most haunted destinations in the U.S., our supernatural residents become a bit more active during Hauntober, aka, October.

The historic mining town of Virginia City is regarded as one of America’s most haunted cities. This October 31 and throughout the month, uncover spooky tales and festive family adventures for all ages – all aligned to accommodate current restrictions and guidelines – during “Hauntober.”

Former Nevada Supreme Court Chief Justice Thomas L. Steffen died peacefully from natural causes on Sept. 1, 2020 in Hendersonville, TN. He was 90. Steffen served on the Nevada Supreme Court from 1982 until his retirement in 1997.

May 5, 1944 – July 16, 2020

Yvonne J. David, resident of Carson City, Nevada, passed away on July 16, 2020. Yvonne was born on May 5, 1944 to the parents Nellie (Alma) Lovingier and Arthur A. Lovingier in San Francisco, CA. Yvonne arrived in Carson City in 1977 and began to work for the State of Nevada. She loved working for Western Nevada College, assisting teachers and staff before retiring.

On May 22nd members of Carson City Elks Lodge #2177 placed 30 flags on service members’ memorials at Lone Mt. Cemetery in Carson City.

The first time I had ever heard "Taps" played in person, I was visiting Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA, just outside of Washington, D.C. A Navy funeral was concluding and bugler "Taps" signaled the sailor's final farewell.

Each year during the Memorial Day weekend, our departed veterans are honored with a flag placement at the Lone Mountain Cemetery in Carson City.

The Carson City area, Nevada Chapter 7 of Disabled Veterans of America is honored to again coordinate the placing of U.S. flags at the graves of departed veterans this Friday, May 22, at Lone Mountain Cemetery.

America's Red Light District originated in Dodge City, Kansas, where train crews would leave their red lanterns outside when entering a bordello so they could be located in the event of an emergency, and America's madams were quick to embrace this tradition as an excellent way to advertise.

Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space announced March 18 its update on office and staffing changes, facility closures and program cancelations and postponements due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Carson City officials are continuously monitoring the level of risk of COVID-19 (Novel Coronavirus) to the community. In close coordination with Carson City Health and Human Services, the City Manager’s Office along with City departments in an abundance of caution are coordinating the closure of some offices to take additional measures to slow the spread of respiratory viruses. JoAnn was born on December 17, 1936 to Florence Brazonavich and John Nevers Sr in Carson City, NV. JoAnn unexpectedly went home to be with the Lord on Monday, February 17, 2020.

Services will be held on Saturday February 29, 2020 at 11:00 at the Carson Colony Gym, 2900 South Curry Street, Carson City, NV 89703.

Viewing will be from 10:00 am to 11:00 am before the services. Burial will be at the Stewart Cemetery after services. Fellowship and potluck will follow back at the Carson Colony Gym. Everyone is welcomed. Flowers or food donations is appreciated.

Members of Nevada Raider Nation, Carson City Chapter, presented a check recently for $1,000 to the Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery. The money has been earmarked to upgrade the software, screen, and printing mechanism in the Gravesite Locator.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the KTVN Share Your Christmas Food Drive at the Governor's Mansion in Carson City and at Minden's Carson Valley Inn, Homestead Holidays at the Silver Saddle Ranch and more. The Polar Express Train Rides are sold out for the rest of the year, but Santa Train express rides are steaming up at the Nevada State Railroad Museum over the weekend. Read on for details.

Honoring those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, Veteran's Day is Monday, Nov. 11 with a number of events happening around the capital city and Northern Nevada which began this week and will continue through Tuesday.
