Beatles tribute, Genoa Candy Dance, Street Vibrations, dog show and more: Carson City region set for jam-packed weekend

Heading into the weekend, there’s a mountain of jam-packed activities over the next three days. Events include the 100th annual Candy Dance in Genoa, the Carson City Community Center Garage Sale, free walks at Nevada State Parks, Virginia City’s Street Vibrations Fall Rally, the 31st annual All-Breed Dog Shows, The Beatles Flashback tribute band concert and much more!

Here's the rundown of activities over the next three days:

Friday, September 27
— Street Vibrations Fall Rally in Virginia City (all day). The rally takes place at 86 C Street. The Comstock starts rumbling when Virginia City hosts this raucous celebration of music, metal and motorcycles. Thousands of bikers cruise into this historic mining town for good food, live entertainment and plenty of fun.

— Take home a pet at no cost of Maddie's Pet Adoption Days (all day). Looking for the love of your life? Hundreds of dogs and cats are waiting for you at animal shelters and rescue groups in Nevada, where pet adoptions will be free this Friday and Saturday, Sept. 27-28 during Maddie's Pet Adoption Days. All adoption fees are waived for pets going to loving new homes thanks to a grant from Dave and Cheryl Duffield Foundation.

— Muscle Powered Friday morning walk at Long Ranch. 8 a.m. Meet at the corner of Longview Way and Bristol Place where we will walk the trails in the neighborhood. Come join Muscle Powered for a free, guided group walk, hike, or ride around Carson City!

— Behind the scenes tours in anthropology. 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Nevada State Museum, 600 N. Carson Street. Tour conducted by Anna Camp, PhD, featuring the State’s impressive basketry collection. Contact Holly Payson at 775-687-4810 ext. 222 for reservations.

— Coin Press demonstrations at the Nevada State Museum. 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 600 N. Carson Street. Visitors to the Nevada State Museum can watch the museum’s historic Coin Press No. 1 carry on a mission it started nearly 150 years ago in the very same building. The venerable press which churned out millions of dollars in silver and gold coins during stints at U.S. Mints in Carson City, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Denver between 1870 and 1964. The press demonstrations will take place the last Friday of the month with two-person teams of volunteers not only working the press but sharing its history with museum visitors.

— Liquidation store to hold soft opening. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Ameriwade Liquidations of Carson City, located at Highway 50 East Suite 207. Ameriwade Liquidations of Carson City is doing final preparations for the grand opening of a Liquidation Outlet at 3579 Highway 50 E., Suite 207 in Carson City. Initial sale dates are Sept. 27-29, 2019 in the industrial park next to Classy Seconds and across from the Goodwill. This store will feature new in the box, new in damaged box and retail close-outs or factory seconds at 20-80 percent below big-box and online store prices. Many items are unassembled in the box, a fair number are previously assembled and ready to use.

— 150th V and T Anniversary Train. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Eastgate Depot, 4650 Eastgate Sliding Rd. Come celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Virginia &Truckee Railway with an on-board performance and re-enactment of William Sharon, famous for his influence on the origination of the railroad in 1869. — Behind the scenes tours in natural history. 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Nevada State Museum. Tour conducted by George Baumgardner, PhD, featuring Plants and Animals of Nevada. — Just Exactly Perfect Music Festival. 12 to 9 p.m. at the South Fork of the American River in Placerville, CA. — Nevada State Museum lecture to tell of historic Army convoy. 2 to 3 p.m. This month’s encore Frances Humphrey Lecture Series at the Nevada State Museum takes a closer look at that original convoy. The lecture is scheduled for 2 to 3 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 27 in the Nevada State Museum’s South Gallery.

— Carson Valley Community Center presents 'Moon Over Buffalo'. 2 to 4 p.m. at the CVIC Hall in Minden. Set in Buffalo, New York in 1955, it is a comedic farce about two run down actors, attempting to revive their repertory company while dreaming of their lost careers in Hollywood. Don’t miss this hilarious comedy, with local actors and many behind the scenes volunteers.

— Experience Virtual Reality at the Carson City Library. 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. at 900 N. Roop Street. Join us to experience Virtual Reality! Using the latest technology, Virtual Reality allows you to experience new places and situations in a computer simulated world. Discover what it’s like to see dinosaurs up close, view art from around the world in a single museum, or blast alien ships in a virtual world. Must be at least 13 years or older to participate. — Letter Writing Campaign Banned Books event. 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Carson City Library. Help us celebrate the freedom to read by thanking your favorite author of a banned or challenged book! Join us in writing a personalized letter or draw a picture for them, to show your support and appreciation for the power of their words. Postage and letter writing materials will be provided. Registration is required. Please note: children 9 and under must be accompanied by a caregiver of at least 13 years of age.

— Carson Mall Cruise Night. 5 to 7:30 p.m. at 1227 S. Carson Street. Music, raffles, trophies and awards, and cars! Grab bags to the first 15 cars. — Open Mic Night at A to Zen Gift Shop. 6 to 9 p.m. at 1803 N. Carson Street. Open Mic Night is held at A to Zen Gift Shop on the Zen Den Stage. All talents, creative projects welcome. — Breaking ground installation in Virginia City. 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. at The Donovan Mill, 900 S. Main Street. This event will give interested attendees an immersive exhibit on the boom-or-bust history of America.

Saturday, September 28

— 100th annual Genoa Candy Dance (all day). The event takes place at the Town of Genoa, corner of Nixon and Main Street. Join us for the special 100th annual Genoa Candy Dance! This year, The Town of Genoa will unveil the 7 ft statue of the Candy Dance Founder, Lillian Virgin Finnegan!

— Nevada State Parks will be 'fee-free' in honor of Nevada Public Lands Day (all day). Nevada residents and visitors are invited to celebrate Nevada Public Lands Day on Saturday, September 28 with a “fee-free” day at Nevada’s State Parks. Park fees, including entrance, camping (Saturday night) and boating, where applicable, will be waived at state parks throughout Nevada.Nevada Public Lands Day encourages Nevadans to discover the many exciting and affordable recreation opportunities right in their own backyards.

— Street Vibrations Fall Rally in Virginia City (all day). The rally takes place at 86 C Street. — Relay for Life fundraiser features tethered hot air balloon rides. 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the Walmart on Topsy Lane. Come one, come all and help the Carson City, Douglas County Relay for Life Team kick off the 2019 fundraising efforts by joining us for an UP, UP AND AWAY tethered Hot Air Balloon Ride! Meet us on Saturday September 28th. We will be at the lower parking lot at the Walmart on Topsy Lane from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. The cost is $5 per person with proceeds benefiting the American Cancer Society Relay for Life.

— Muscle Powered Saturday morning hike. 8 a.m. Meet at the Park and Ride lot on Hwy 50, just west of the intersection at 395 to carpool to the trailhead since parking is limited. Come join Muscle Powered for a free, guided group walk, hike, or ride around Carson City!

— Community invited to participate in Barn Sale, Topaz Ranch Estates this Saturday. 8 a.m. at 3900 Carter Dr. Community Barn Sale. Free to participate. Bring your own table! Saturday, September 28, 2019, 8:00 a.m. at 3900 Carter Dr., Behind Topaz Joe's, Wellington, Nevada.

— Carson City Farmers Market returns this Saturday. 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the corner of 3rd and Curry St. in Carson City. Enjoy fresh-picked produce, local meats, fresh flowers, artisan baked goods, jams, honey, crafts, live music and Carson City’s smiling faces.This week at the market you can enjoy music by Ricky D., stop by the kids' booth to make your own market bag, we have all the supplies for you. We are excited to see you all again this year.

— AKC All-Breed Dog Show, Obedience and Rally Trials. 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Fuji Park. Bonanza Kennel Club of Carson City will hold its 31st annual AKC All-Breed Dog Shows, Obedience and Rally Trials with more than 800 dogs in attendance this weekend, Sept. 28–29, at Fuji Park in Carson City. Judging begins at 8:30 a.m. each day and will run through the day until about 5:00 p.m. There are Specialty Shows on Friday for Belgian Sheepdogs, Belgian Tervuren, German Shorthaired Pointers, Papillons and Rottweilers.

— North Carson Geology Hike. 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Meet at North Goni Road, at the dirt lot to the right of the Cinderlite gravel pit. Join local geologist, Tom Gray, and Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space on this free Interpretive Program that explores the story-telling geologic features found in Goni Canyon. Look forward to up-close views of Cretaceous Sierra Nevada Granite, an ancient river bed, volcanic ash formations, and the insides of a young volcano! This program is geared towards confident & experienced hikers; it will consist of semi-strenuous hikes up the rugged hills along Goni Road. Wear closed-toed shoes and bring water & sun protection.

— Carson City Community Garage Sale. 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William Street. Deal hunters and bargain shoppers will be there, and now Carson City organizers want to secure those sellers ahead of time before the big Saturday event later this month. The Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space is now accepting sellers for its 3rd Annual Community Garage Sale planned for Saturday, Sept. 28 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center parking lot.

— Rummage sale to benefit Veteran Projects. 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Veterans Hall located at Curry and 2nd St. Sierra Tahoe Auxiliary No. 137 of the Fleet Reserve Association will be holding it's annual rummage sale. You determine the price you want to donate for each item. All proceeds benefit veteran projects throughout the year such as Honor Flight & Suicide Prevention, etc.

— Remembering Carson Valley in the 1950s and 1960s at Dangberg Historic Park. 10 a.m. On Saturday, Sept. 28, at 10 a.m., the final event of the 2019 Festival season features members of the 1962 graduating class of Douglas High School sharing their memories of Carson Valley in the 1950s and 1960s. Carson Valley has always been a unique, close-knit community. Of the original thirty-five graduating students, twenty-one are still living, many of whom have remained in Carson Valley. This event is free to attend. Please bring your own seating to all events and no pets allowed — service animals only.

— 'Work Smart' salary negotiation workshop. 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Please join us for AAUW (NV) Capital Branch's final AAUW Work Smart event of the year in Carson City — a full in-person workshop — and learn how to negotiate for salary and benefits.

– Fall Festival at the Carson Valley Swim Center. 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 1600 Hwy 88 in Minden. Come Join our fall festival where we will have activities of all kinds and a floating pumpkin patch!

— Voices of the Past in Virginia City. 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Silver Terrace Cemetery, 381 Cemetery Rd. Come see the history of the Comstock come alive! The event is a ghostly walking tour performed by Funtime Theater and raises funds for the cemetery’s restoration.

— Train to Virginia City from Carson City. Event takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 4650 Eastgate Siding Road. Prices for the ride range from $25-$55. Rediscover Nevada’s rich history in mining and mill on the V&T Carson City-Virginia City route as you meander through tunnels, canyons and mining towns aboard a restored 1914 Pullman coach led by a 1916 Baldwin 2-8-0 steam locomotive. This relaxing all-day train excursion is fully narrated with historical facts and anecdotes. Departing from Carson City’s Eastgate Depot, the 24-mile round-trip tour includes a fun 3.5-hour stopover in historic Virginia City, where you can stroll the boardwalks and explore restaurants, shops, saloons, museums, mines and more. Rediscover Nevada’s rich history in mining and mills on the V&T Carson City-Virginia City route as you meander through tunnels, canyons and mining towns aboard a restored 1914 Pullman coach led by a 1916 Baldwin 2-8-0 steam locomotive. This relaxing, all-day train excursion is fully narrated with historical facts and anecdotes. Departing from Carson City’s Eastgate Depot, the 24-mile round-trip tour includes a fun 3.5-hour stopover in historic Virginia City, where you can stroll the boardwalks and explore restaurants, shops, saloons, museums, mines and more.

— Guided tours of the Nevada State Capitol. Two separate tours will take place at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. every Saturday in Carson City. Tours typically take an hour and include both the exterior of the building, nearby memorials as well as the interior of the building. Tours are available for up to 20 people on a first-come, first-served basis. The building includes numerous historic artifacts that range from portraits of past Nevada governors to sculptures to historical items showcased during Nevada’s Sesquicentennial celebration. The Capitol remains open to the public Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Guided tours of up to 20 people can be arranged in advance by calling the Nevada State Museum’s Education Program at 775-687-4810, ext. 237.

— Oktoberfest at the Fox Brewpub. 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. at 310 S. Carson Street. Our Oktoberfest festival falls on National Drink a beer day! Enjoy a wide selection of craft beers and brews that will keep Carson City lively all night long!

— Saturday Beginning Wheel Throwing at Ogres-Holm Pottery. 1 to 4 p.m. at 1215 S. Carson St. in Carson City. The Ogres of Ogres-Holm introduce you to clay in this 6-week open start class, including open studio time, is designed to get you started. It’s a great way to relax on a Saturday afternoon. $175 for 6 week session or $45 drop ins.

— Lego Club at the Carson City Library. 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at 900 N. Roop Street. Build self-led creations through hands-on learning with LEGO Education materials. Participants 9 and under must be accompanied by a caregiver of at least 13 years of age at all times.

— Toast of the Canyon Train in Virginia City. 5 to 7 p.m. at the Eastgate Depot, 4650 Eastgate Sliding Rd. Journey into the Carson River Canyon on an intimate experience, perfect for date night. Enjoy white wine and appetizers as you travel on a 45-minute trip south of Carson City’s Eastgate Depot. The ride is filled with scenic views of the Carson River and the canyon walls as they echo the sound of the train whistle.

— Dance lesson at the Brewery Arts Center. 6:30 to 10 p.m. at 449 W. King Street. High Sierra Swing Dance Club guest instructor and DJ, Jeffrey Munson will show us how to create your own variations for leaders and followers. Lesson from 6:30-7:30 p.m., dance from 7:30-10:00 p.m. Members $7 for lesson and $7 for dance, guests $10 for lesson and $10 for dance.

— Carson City Ghost Walk returns this Saturday. 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Bob McFadden Plaza. For the 27th year, the spookiest historical tour of the capital city is returning this Saturday, June 1 with the Carson City Ghost Walk. The Carson City Ghost Walk is a seasonal historical tour of Carson City’s west side, a walking history lesson with a touch of the supernatural. Some of the stops on the tour include the Bliss Mansion, the Ferris Mansion, the Governor’s Mansion, and the Rinckel Mansion.

— Saturday Night Star Party at Wester Nevada College. 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the Jack C. Davis Observatory, 2699 Vanpatten Ave. The Jack C Davis Observatory hosts free star parties on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of the month year round, starting at 7:30 p.m. (except when there is snow on the roads). The evening starts with a lecture on one of numerous topics and concludes with guided star viewing by one of our astronomers. Mike Thomas lectures 2nd Saturdays and Dr. Tom Herring lectures on 4th Saturdays.

— Carson City's BAC to feature Beatles Flashback tribute. 8 to 9:30 p.m. at the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall, 511 W. King Street. The Beatles Flashback is coming to the Brewery Art Center’s performance hall on Sept. 28, 2019 at 7 p.m. to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Abbey Road, which was originally released Sept. 26, 1969. Come by the BAC to hear some of your favorite Beatles hits as we celebrate 50 years of the Fab Four. Over 50 years ago, The Beatles made their American television debut on The Ed Sullivan Show to over 74 million viewers. Now, the Beatles Flashback are keeping the spirit of the original band alive, in a time of renewed interest in their music.

— Muscle Powered Sunday Bicycle Ride. 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Fremont Elementary School. Meet at Fremont Elementary School in the South parking lot next to the Linear Ditch Trail. Typically, this ride consists of two 10-15 minute loops with varying pace depending on rider level. This is a “no drop” ride so no one will be left behind. All riders must have a bicycle in safe working condition, a helmet, and closed toed shoes. Jimmy G's will offer drink specials, while members will grill hot dogs for the crowd. Donations to cover the cost of food are accepted. A 50/50 cash drawing will be held as well.
