Suicide Prevention

Local medical student Alyssa Woodward will host the 4th Annual Suicide Awareness Race this Saturday, May 6. This will be held at McFadden Plaza in Carson City. Registration is available online, the evening before and race morning.

You are invited to join us for a QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) Talk: 3 Steps to Help Save a Life from Suicide, Tuesday, April 25 from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m at the UNR Extension, Carson City/Storey County Office, 2621 Northgate Lane, Suite 12, Carson City.

As many as 17% of people who struggle with problem gambling demonstrate suicidal gestures, attempt, or complete suicide, with an additional 32% who experience suicidal ideation, according to a study published by the Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease.

On December 29th, the Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health (DPBH) will be hosting a virtual community-based Town Hall to address suicide prevention.

Being a student at Carson High School is rewarding enough, academically speaking, but learning is happening everywhere; however, forcing a teacher to dress in pink, from head to toe, wearing a pink tutu, is a different story and an exciting fundraising opportunity.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region. Western Nevada College will host a memorial exhibit and informational presentation on the 9-11 attacks on Friday. Partnership Carson City will team up for a statewide suicide prevention virtual walk this Saturday. Along with live music and a 5K run/walk at Bob McFadden Plaza, there is plenty of excitement buzzing around the state capitol! Read on for more information.

Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey counties meets Thursday, Sept. 10 at 9 a.m. via Zoom. This month, guest speakers include Misty Vaughan Allen, Suicide Prevention Coordinator with the Nevada Office of Suicide Prevention, and Cherylyn Rahr-Wood, Zero Suicide Coordinator.

Partnership Carson City, inspiring a healthy community through education and prevention, is teaming up with the Nevada Coalition for Suicide Prevention and the Nevada Office of Suicide Prevention to remember those lost through suicide for the 14th annual 5K Walk in Memory, Walk for Hope.

Get an early start on your Christmas shopping and show support for your local veterans Sept. 26-27 in Carson City with the fourth annual Sierra-Tahoe Auxiliary Unit No. 137 Fleet Reserve rummage sale.

Stop by Veteran's Hall located at Second and Curry Street in Carson City from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and pick up a few items in which you choose the price you want to pay, with the proceeds to benefit Carson City area veterans.

Don’t spew your hate at me.

On Saturday, July 4, 2020, Independence Day, I was on the Nevada State Capitol Grounds in Carson City. This is where I was the target of a hostile verbal assault: “Get out of here! You don’t belong here! You’re not welcome here!”

COVID-19 has caused increased social distancing and self-isolation, and many Nevadans struggle to cope with the stress and anxiety of the pandemic. These feelings of fear are taking a toll on people’s mental and physical health and well-being.

During this pandemic, I would love to think I am in fact a builder because I strive to see the best in this, because I have been helping those struggling immensely during these hard times, and because I am doing my best to help the medical professionals I know.

Stimulus Program Information

The coronavirus relief bill passed March 27 by Congress provides payments to individuals who make less than $100,000 a year. The payment total $1,200 for each adult who makes $75,000 or less, plus $500 per child. The payment amounts decrease if you make between $75,000 and $99,000. The income is determined by your latest tax return filed with the IRS. It will use your 2019 taxes if you have filed them already, or your 2018 taxes if you haven't. Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties holds a breakfast meeting on the second Thursday of each month at 9am in various locations in Storey and Lyon counties.

HCC’s February meeting is Thursday, Feb. 13, 9 a.m. at the Silver Springs Community Center, 2945 Fort Churchill Street, Silver Springs, Nev.

With sunny skies and daytime highs in the 50s, Tuesday is shaping up to be a great day around the capital city. Muscle Powered will host morning and evening walks, plus there's an assortment of meetings, club gatherings, art showings, a local school board meeting and more. At the end of the day, there's no better way to cap off the evening than by celebrating, with your sweetheart, music about love. That will be what's happening at Living the Good Life as Mile High Jazz Band and our celebrated vocalist Jakki Ford will do just that presenting "Jazz Sampler for Sweethearts." Read on for details.

The next Carson City School Board meeting will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 11 in the Sierra Room of the Community Center located at 851 E. William Street beginning at 7 p.m.

Topics for discussion include proposed changes to school social workers, suicide prevention, a proposed salary increase for the superintendent and more.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a mountain of jam-packed activities over the next three days. Events include the 100th annual Candy Dance in Genoa, the Carson City Community Center Garage Sale, free walks at Nevada State Parks, Virginia City’s Street Vibrations Fall Rally, the 31st annual All-Breed Dog Shows, The Beatles Flashback tribute band concert and much more!

Events include the Silver State Art Festival at Fuji Park, suicide awareness walks in Carson City, a Celtic faire at Dangberg Home Ranch, the ninth annual Edible Pedal bike ride at Bowers Mansion, train rides in Virginia City and much more!

Our mission is to raise money to help fund suicide awareness and prevention. All of our proceeds are split in two and donated to our local scholarship (Jordan Woodward Memorial Scholarship) and the suicide prevention network.
