I Love Carson City’s Weekend Event Summary: July 11-12

I hope you’re hungry, Carson City. Hungry and adventurous. The annual Chili Cook-off and Craft Fair hits Glen Eagles this weekend, and there will be plenty to sample. If you need something cold to drink, head to 7-ELEVEN for a free small slushee from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. in celebration of Seven Eleven Day. The Farmers Market is always a good bet on Saturday mornings for sampling all the yummy stuff that grows nearby.

Bit by the shopping bug? Head over to the Forman-Roberts House for their Yard Sale/Flea Market; while you’re there, check out their exhibit of teapots. Good Time Auctions has moved their weekly live auction to Saturday. It starts at 3 p.m. but you can get a sneak peek of their wares starting at 8 a.m. A garage sale benefiting the Carson Animal Shelter Initiative is at the end of East Fifth Street on Marsh Street starting at 8 a.m. Happy hunting!

There are some great family friendly options in Carson City this weekend. First thing in the morning, head to the Carson City Airport for Young Eagle airplane rides, courtesy of Sierra Chapter 403 of the Experimental Aircraft Association. Rides on the Edwards Motor Car at the Nevada State Railroad Museum are fun, too. Head to the Carson City Library for their monthly Lego Club, but be warned, space is limited. It’s Family Fun Day at the Nevada State Museum: kids 10 and older can explore archaeological methods and gain an appreciation for our local Native American tribes.

Carson Cigar Company downtown will have live music with Deep Fried Mojo, a jammin’ Blues Funk Rockabilly band from South Lake Tahoe. The Zen Den inside A to Zen Thrift is hosting The Long Haul with a wide mix of rock jams. The Brewery Arts Center wants to show off its new plaza with an outdoor concert featuring classical guitarist, Sondre Hoymer.

Grab your friends and family and head out to Genoa for the last day of the Cowboy Fast Shoot Competition right by the Dake House. Chili and Salsa are still at Glen Eagles, so you have a second chance to pick a favorite. It’s your last chance to catch Senior Follies at the Community Center, and the Proscenium Players have a matinee of ‘Murder in an English Manor’ this afternoon, as well.

The Sierra Nevada section of the Society of Women Engineers recognized several Carson City students and one teacher at the 2024 Night of STEM Star Awards in Reno, Friday, April 26.

The honorees were recognized for displaying remarkable talent and commitment in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). These young scholars not only excelled academically but also engaged in innovative projects and extracurricular activities that have enhanced their learning and impacted their community.

I usually whistle past the obituaries, but Larry Young caught my eye. He was a scientist who discovered Love Potion Number Nine. Yes, Larry unearthed a chemical that heightens desire, not that the world needs it. A drug that would diminish desire might do the world more good in the long run.

Today was a very productive day working in the yard. The cold weather kept me in far too long recently. I wanted to be outside. The temperature was perfect with a bright blue sky and little wind.

A local couple's efforts to get the flag on C-Hill in Carson City repaired is well underway, with the president of the C-Hill Foundation working on getting the needed material.

As the summer sun begins to heat up, so does the excitement at Dayton Pop Warner as local athletes gear up for a two-day strength and conditioning camp.

Sunday in Carson City brought out a black bear with a shiny brown coat that lumbered through a yard in early morning light, probably looking for breakfast.

Nevada State Police has identified a Northern California man who died in a fatal crash last month on I-80 in Fernley.

Carson High School will host its First Annual Art Expo, showcasing the talents of its student artists in photography, graphic design, drawing, painting and ceramics Thursday, May 16, from 5-7 p.m.

A 40-year-old man was arrested Wednesday for suspicion of carrying a concealed knife without a permit, a gross misdemeanor offense, and misdemeanor disturbing the peace, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.
