— Carson City Library Presents: Explore Earth Exhibit. 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Explore Earth: Our Changing Planet, a national traveling exhibition exploring a global view of our changing environment, will be on display at the Carson City Library. Getting people interested in science can be a challenge, but Explore Earth: Our Changing Planet strives to make it fun with a focus on local earth science topic, such as weather, the water cycle and ecosystem changes as well as a global look at our changing planet. 900 North Roop Street.

— Capital City Reads: Carson City Library April program features 'Station Eleven.' 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Happening through April. The Carson City Library invites everyone in Carson City to participate in a community read of "Station Eleven" by Emily St. John Mandel for the library’s annual Capital City Reads program during the month of April. Capital City Reads is Carson City Library’s annual city-wide book club sponsored by the Friends of the Carson City Library that brings people together through reading and discussion. "Station Eleven" explores the role of arts and culture in creating and keeping the community connections that keep humanity alive after a devastating flu pandemic brings civilization as we know it to an end. This book was chosen to align with this year’s theme for National Library Week: Libraries = Strong Communities. Copies of Station Eleven in English and Spanish will be available at the Carson City Library while supplies last. — Family Story Time at Carson City Library. 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. Weekly themed singing, stories, finger-plays, or art centered around a book. Participants 9 and under must be accompanied by a caregiver of at least 13 years of age at all times. 900 North Roop Street, Carson City.

— Thursday Hike to Hobart Road Sponsored by Muscle Powered. 3 p.m. Join Muscle Powered for its free leader-led hikes each week to enjoy Nevada outdoors around Carson City! Meet at the trailhead at the far west end of Hobart Road in the Lakeview Area. Water and sturdy closed-toe shoes required. Hat, sunscreen and hiking poles recommended. Bring a friend and/or friendly dogs. All hikes are 2-4 miles with duration of about 90 minutes, sometimes with elevation gains of 500’ or more. In case of bad weather, we will cancel. — LEGO Club at Carson City Library. 4 to 6 p.m. Build self-led creations through hands-on learning with LEGO Education materials. Participants 9 and under must be accompanied by a caregiver of at least 13 years of age at all times. 900 North Roop Street, Carson City.

— Capital Makers: Open Hours at Carson City Library. 5 to 8 p.m. Capital Makers provides open access to information and various technologies to enhance professional, personal and educational goals. It is a place to gain hands-on experience, knowledge, skills and to make stuff! We encourage socialization, creativity and tinkering in this area (Makerspace.) A premiere library card as well as certification on the machine(s) you wish to use are required to use the Capital Makers Space for open hours. Information on how to upgrade to a premiere library card and how to receive Capital Makers equipment certification is available online. Drop-ins are welcome, no registration is required. Capital Makers staff will be present.

— Nevada Raider Nation: Carson City Chapter Draft Day Party. 5 p.m. The Carson City Chapter of Nevada Raider Nation will host its inaugural Draft Day Party from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, April 25, at Espolon Grill y Tequileria in Moundhouse. All Raiders fans are welcome to attend, there is no entry fee. Drawings will be held each hour for Raiders items. Applications to join the Carson City Chapter of Nevada Raider Nation will be available for those who want to join. Membership is $20 per person. Espolon is located at 10115 US Highway 50, on the south side of the roadway. Espolon will also have their menu and drinks available for purchase.

— Carson City's CASA hosts volunteer information hour, training. 5:30 p.m. It's that time of year again! CASA of Carson City is looking for a few good men and women to join the ranks of our CASA volunteers. Court Appointed Special Advocate volunteers advocate in court on behalf of children who have experienced abuse or neglect. — Western Nevada College presentation: What We Can Do About Climate Change. 5:30 p.m. Presented by the Nevada Green Initiative. Presentation will be in the Reynolds building, room 103.

— V&T Railroad Coach 17 subject of Thursday museum lecture in Carson City. 6 p.m. It has been called the most historically important train car in existence and how it traveled over the past 150 years from the Golden Spike ceremony at Promontory Summit, Utah to the center of a new exhibit at the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City is quite a tale. Built in 1868 in Sacramento by the Central Pacific Railroad, and originally called the Commissioner’s Car, it has been known for much of its life as V&T Coach 17 — a time, weather and woodpecker-worn survivor of railroading history. One hundred and fifty years ago, it carried Central Pacific President Leland Stanford and other dignitaries to Promontory for the completion of the nation’s first transcontinental railroad; and for decades it carried passengers to and from the silver boom on the Comstock Lode in Nevada before carrying a host of Hollywood actors in numerous films and television shows. On Thursday, April 25, Nevada State Railroad Museum Curator of Education Adam Michalski will tell the story of Coach 17 – the latest in a series of lectures leading up to the opening of the new exhibit, “The Transcontinental Railroad: What a Different It Made.” The event starts at 6 p.m. Tickets are $6 for adults, free for members of the Friends of the Nevada State Railroad Museum and for children 17 and younger.

— Neck and Back Pain 101: Free wellness lecture at Brewery Arts Center. 6 p.m. Attention back and neck pain sufferers: You can learning ways to help alleviate what you are experiencing. Learn how Thursday during a wellness lecture at the Brewery Arts Center in Carson City. The program features Zachary Child, MD. It will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. inside the Brewery Arts Center Theater, 449 West King Street. The event is free.

— Country Dancing Comes to Piper's Opera House in Virginia City. 6 p.m. Country dancing is coming to Virginia City on Thursday, April 25 with a free community event at Pipers Opera House. The Carson Lanes Country Kickers, a dance group that meets and dances weekly at Carson Lanes’ Eleventh Frame Lounge, will bring their skill, enthusiasm and fun to the first, in what hopefully will be the first of many country dance nights on the spring-loaded dance floor at Piper’s. Tedi Burger, General Manager of Carson Lanes Family Fun Center in Carson City, will DJ the evening from 6-10 pm and will teach beginner line dances as well. The evening will feature traditional and modern dances. The Country Kickers from Carson City are a multi-generational, fun and open group of folks who have one thing in common, they love to dance. They’ll bring their infectious energy and solid know-how to the dance floor. All skill levels welcome and beginners are encouraged to attend. The Community Country Dance Night will be on Thursday, April 25, 2019, from 6 to 10 p.m. at 12 North B Street. This is a FREE all-ages event. There will be a No host bar.

— Museum lecture in Carson City celebrates Northern Nevada theater. 6:30 p.m. Nevada’s theatrical history is long, rich and storied — from Piper’s Opera House in Virginia City to the McKissick Theater in Reno to the Eureka Opera House to the casino showrooms big and small around the state. The state has experienced a wide array of colorful characters, theater activities and movements which have enriched the lives of its citizens and enhanced its cultural legacy. That history the subject of this month’s Frances Humphrey Lecture at the Nevada State Museum in Carson City. The event is Thursday, April 25 at 6:30 p.m. Admission is $8 for adults, free for museum members and children 17 and younger. The Nevada State Museum is located at 600 N. Carson St., in Carson City. — Music for Life Ensemble at the Carson City Community Center. 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Carson City Symphony’s Youth Strings ensembles, Not Quite Ready For Carnegie Hall Players adult intermediate string ensemble, and Joyful Noise Carson Children’s Choir will perform a “Music is for Life” concert. — Tickets available for Friday's Carson City community father-daughter dance. The “Under the Big Top” Annual Father-Daughter Ball, a Carson City community-wide event for all ages held at Carson High School, is coming this Friday, April 26 from 6 to 9 p.m. Tickets are $40 per couple and $10 for each additional daughter. — Student art show open at WNC’s Main Gallery at Carson City campus. Daily. The artistic talents of Western Nevada College students will be on display in the college art gallery for the next month. The 2019 Student Art Show will be shown through Wednesday, May 15 in the Bristlecone Building on WNC’s Carson City campus.The exhibit features juried artwork from WNC students who were enrolled in classes during the fall or are currently enrolled during the spring semester. Students will compete for first, second and third places in drawing, painting, collage, photography, graphic art, ceramics, sculpture and mixed media. Students will also have the opportunity to price and sell their artwork. WNC’s Main Gallery is located in the Bristlecone Building and is open to the public six days a week: Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

— Carson City art exhibition 'Creative Spark' features 32 area high school artists. The Capital City Arts Initiative hosts its exhibition, Creative Spark, at the Community Development Building, also known as the Brick, 108 E Proctor Street, Carson City. Thirty-two students from Carson, Dayton, Douglas, and Pioneer high schools have work in the exhibit. The free exhibition is available to the public now through May 29, 2019, Mondays through Fridays, 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Creative Spark includes a wide variety of art media including ceramics, collage, drawing, painting, and photography that show the diversity of the students’ creativity.

— Paiute artist’s work displayed at Nevada Legislature. 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Native American artist Melissa Melero-Moose finds inspiration for her mixed media creations from the landscape and culture of the Northern Paiute of the Great Basin.
“Willows, tules, cattails, and pine nuts are all very important staples to the Paiute people, being sources of food, shelter, and implements made with artistic intention,” she said. “I consider these works to be a perspective of my tribe and culture through the eyes of a Native woman, mother and artist.” Melero-Moose’s work is featured in the exhibit, “Translating Paiute,” which went on display Monday, April 8 at the Nevada Arts Council’s Legislative eXhibition Series (LXS) Gallery inside the Nevada Legislative Building. 401 S Carson Street, Carson City.

— Capital City Arts Initiative Presents: The Felt Works. Daily, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The exhibition is free and open to the public Monday through Friday and will is on display now through May 3. Artist Svea Ferguson, based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, created her wall sculptures from common materials found primarily in domestic spaces. She uses vinyl and linoleum flooring materials designed to mimic the appearance of high-end options such as marble, granite, and hardwood at significantly lower costs. These flexible, faux veneers present physical qualities, which allow them to be easily manipulated by the hand, without the need for specialty tools or facilities. The CCAI Courthouse Gallery is located at 885 E Musser St., Carson City.

— Watercolor Exploration classes offered in March and April through WNC's Continuing Education. Whether you are a new or continuing watercolor student, learn to splash and play while discovering the expansive possibilities of watercolor at classes offered through Western Nevada College's Continuing Education program. In each 4-week class, we will explore several different approaches to watercolor. We will also investigate art fundamental topics concentrating on one topic per 4-week session. Students may choose their own subjects, with instructor input as to relevance based on individual skill level. Supplies require. — Carson City group offers support, education to parents with children who have addictions. 6 p.m. Tuesdays. A support group is restarting in Carson City for family members who have loved ones struggling with addictions. The group will meet at a new location on Tuesday nights, 6 p.m. at Partnership Carson City meeting room at 1925 N Carson St. PAL (Parents of Addicted Loved Ones) is a support group of parents helping parents. We meet every week to offer education and support for parents or spouses dealing with an addicted family member. Although PAL has been informally in existence since 2006, we incorporated in Arizona as a non-profit in 2015 in order to help expand PAL nationally. PAL's vision is to make PAL meetings available at no charge to all parents and family members struggling with the addiction of a loved one. PAL is a faith-based Christian organization and our mission is to provide hope to families through education and support. — WNC's Carson City campus offers 8-week research-based stress reduction course. 6 p.m. Western Nevada College’s Continuing Education Department is proud to offer Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction at its Carson City campus. This eight-week course uses 30 years of research to help participants develop more capacity to deal with short- and long-term stressors in their lives. The class will meet weekly on Tuesday evenings from 6 to 8, with an all-day retreat from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on May 4. The cost is $365. The tools offered in the course will teach students how to approach life with more composure, energy, understanding and enthusiasm, and can also help participants develop the ability to manage and reduce pain levels. Through weekly homework, students will improve their focus, resilience and capacity to recover more quickly from life’s challenges. The course is taught by Heather Haslem, a national board-certified health and wellness coach and qualified Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction teacher. — Capital City Arts Initiative presents 'The Lay of the Land' at Carson City showing. The Capital City Arts Initiative presents an exhibition, "The Lay of the Land," by artist Fred Howland in the Community Center’s Sierra Room, 851 E William Street, Carson City. The exhibition runs now through June 30, 2019. Howland’s passion is to create a sense of time and place through his photographs. He returns to favorite sites to work, like Hope Valley and Genoa, returning to take repeat images in different seasons and lighting. His interest in landscapes go back to his New England roots where he was more comfortable in the outdoors than in school classrooms. The Sierra Room is open to the public during Carson City official meetings including the first and third Thursdays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and many afternoons, Monday through Thursday, 5 to 8 p.m.

— Carson City kindergarten registration begins. The Carson City School District is asking parents to begin registering children who will be 5-years-old by Sept. 30, 2019, and eligible for Kindergarten for the coming 2019-2020 school year. Full-day Kindergarten classes are offered at all elementary schools in Carson City.

— "Home Means Nevada" photo exhibit debut at the Nevada Legislature. The Nevada Arts Council is unveiling a new traveling photo exhibition, “Home Means Nevada” that will start its journey in the hallways of the Nevada Legislature during the 2019 session. The exhibition features the works of 15 contemporary photographers, but which echoes famous photographs and artwork from the late 1800s and early 1900s that helped spur protections for many of our nation’s national parks. The exhibit highlights some of the unique treasures found on federally managed lands across the state, from bighorns to Burning Man, to the ancient rock art and petroglyphs in the Gold Butte area. The exhibition will be displayed in the Senate hallway of the Nevada Legislature, 401 S. Carson St. in Carson City.

— WNC Continuing Education offers Zumba classes. Zumba is a dance form and aerobics fitness program. Zumba involves dance and aerobic movements performed to energetic Latin and pop music from countries around the world. The choreography incorporates hip hop, soca, samba, salsa, meringue and mambo. Squats and lunges are also included. Students should wear comfortable clothing and tennis shoes, and bring a towel, water and a positive attitude. No prior dance experience is required — Zumba is about making friends, getting a workout, and enjoying yourself!
